Case management of pregnant and parenting female crack and polydrug abusers.

The increasing use of crack-cocaine among addicted women and subsequent births of polydrug-exposed infants prompted the State of Florida to undertake initiatives to seek solutions to these problems. This study, focused on one of these initiatives, explored the relationship between service components of a comprehensive treatment program and substance-free time among 120 African American and Caucasian crack-cocaine addicted women. Findings from a multiple regression analysis indicated that aftercare management (p < .0001), vocational services (p < .02), and residential treatment (p < .03) were s

Social class and parenting children with mild and moderate mental retardation.

Based on Kohn's (1977) and Gecas' (1979) theories of social class and parenting values, the role of socioeconomic status (SES) as a determinant of parenting attitudes and behaviors and as a moderator of problems associated with raising children with handicaps was evaluated among 171 families raising a child with mild or moderate mental retardation. Self-report measures assessed mothers' and fathers' attitudes regarding control, independence, and closeness within the family, and parental and family problems. Supportive, aversive, and controlling parent-child interactions were observed in the ho

Parental and Adolescent Internalizing Problems: The Role of Inappropriate Parenting Practices.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescence is a developmental period marked by increased vulnerability to internalizing problems. Parental internalizing symptoms represent a key risk factor, yet mechanisms of transmission and differential maternal and paternal contributions remain insufficiently understood. This study examined the role of inappropriate parenting practices in the intergenerational transmission of internalizing problems and tested measurement invariance across family members. METHODS: Data were collected in Croatia during the 2021/2022 school year using a cross-sectional survey design. The samp

Harsh parenting and adolescent internet addiction: a longitudinal moderated mediation model.

The present study examined the longitudinal relationship between harsh parenting and adolescent internet addiction, as well as the mediating role of depression and the moderating role of gratitude in the above association. A total of 506 adolescents (241 females, Mage = 12.92 years, SD = 0.62) participated in two waves of data collection in early 2022 and mid- 2023, respectively. Harsh parenting, adolescents' internet addiction, depression, and gratitude were assessed through adolescent self-reports. Results indicated that after controlling for T1 (Time 1) gender, age, subjective socioeconomic

Parenting knowledge moderates the association between parent and child internalizing symptoms.

Parent anxiety and depression are well-established risk factors for childhood internalizing problems. While effective parenting may buffer this relationship, the role of parenting knowledge, defined as understanding evidence-based parenting strategies, remains underexplored. Using a nationally representative sample of 1,000 parents of children aged 5-12, we examined whether parenting knowledge moderated the association between parent and child symptoms of anxiety and depression. Results indicated significant moderation effects: Among parents with lower knowledge, there were strong positive ass

Gender-Based Differences in Parenting Experiences of Surgical Faculty and Trainees.

INTRODUCTION: As more women enter surgical fields, ensuring gender equity is increasingly critical to career longevity and workforce retention. Although peripartum complications and pregnancy-related discrimination among surgical trainees and faculty has been well described, limited data exist comparing parenting experiences of male and female surgeons. We aimed to characterize gender-based differences in work-related parenting concerns within a single department of surgery. METHODS: An institutional review board-approved, anonymous survey of residents, fellows, and faculty within the departm

The Longitudinal Relationship Between Mindful Parenting and Child Emotional Self-Regulation.

BACKGROUND: The development of socio-emotional competencies is essential for school readiness. Children with behavioural, emotional or social difficulties, upon entering the school, are often at an increased risk of poorer academic and health outcomes. Whilst children largely learn early emotion regulation skills and self-regulation through parental observation and modelling, a known benefit of mindful parenting, an understanding of how mindful parenting and child emotional regulation relate to one another during these important early years of schooling remains limited. This study aimed to det

Parent Mental Health and Engagement in Parenting Interventions for Child ADHD.

Parenting interventions are a front-line treatment for children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, many parents of children with ADHD have elevated ADHD or depressive symptoms, which may impede their ability to engage in and benefit from such interventions. This secondary data analysis examined associations between parent mental health, treatment engagement, and parenting-related treatment outcomes within a randomized trial of 172 families of children with ADHD. Families received either Parental Friendship Coaching (PFC; a behavioral parent training program) or Copi

Early Parenting and Infant-Parent Attachment: Developmental Origins of Psychotic Experiences.

INTRODUCTION: The infant-parent relationship is theorized to be related to the origins of psychotic experiences, given the key role of infant-parent attachment and early-life caregiving in children's neurodevelopmental trajectories. Yet, the magnitude of this association is not well understood, and research is often based on self-reports. We examined the relationship of disconnected and extremely insensitive parenting and disorganized infant attachment with the occurrence of psychotic experiences in childhood and adolescence. We additionally examined the role of maternal experiences of loss, a

Quadratic associations between harsh parenting and changes in children's nightly sleep.

OBJECTIVES: Harsh parenting has been associated with children's poor sleep. Existing studies with older children are predominantly cross-sectional and focus on linear associations between harsh parenting and sleep. Addressing these gaps, we investigated the longitudinal quadratic association between harsh parenting and change in children's sleep over 2 years. METHOD: Children (N = 329, 46% female, 64% White/European American, and 36% Black/African American) and their parents from socioeconomically diverse backgrounds participated in 2 data collection waves spaced 2 years apart (ages 9 and 11,

Evaluating A Brief Telehealth Positive Parenting Intervention: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Additional work is needed to increase the accessibility and scalability of parenting interventions. Selected Positive Parenting Program (i.e., Triple P) is a brief, evidence-based parenting intervention, but the efficacy of telehealth delivery has not yet been tested. This three-arm randomized controlled trial evaluated the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of Selected Triple P delivered as a universal intervention through telehealth. We also investigated whether an active discussion component administered by mental health providers improved outcomes. This clinical trial was

The Impact of Social Support: Fathers' Depressive Symptoms and Parenting Stress.

Parental depressive symptoms are positively correlated with levels of parenting stress. Greater parenting stress predicts negative outcomes for both parents and children, and worse family functioning. Social support is a key protective factor against depressive symptoms; however, minimal research has examined the relationship between social support, paternal depressive symptoms, and parenting stress among fathers. Seventy-nine fathers of children, aged 2-6 years old, completed an online survey. Mediation analyses, using Hayes' PROCESS macro, determined significant indirect effects of social su

Trauma, coping, and adjustment when parenting a child with Dravet syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Dravet syndrome (DS) is a severe developmental and epileptic encephalopathy that requires significant caregiver input across the lifespan. This predominantly falls on parents, who are faced with considerable challenges including physical demands, financial burdens, and sustained pressure on mental wellbeing leading to mental health difficulties. We aimed to develop a grounded theory model for the process of coping and adjustment that occurs when caring for a child who has a diagnosis of DS. METHODS: Using a Constructivist Grounded Theory methodology, we conducted five focus groups

Interactions between parenting styles, child anxiety, and oppositionality in selective mutism.

Selective mutism (SM) is a poorly understood condition, and debate continues regarding its etiology and classification. Research suggests that a genetic vulnerability may play a role in the development of the disorder which may be compounded by anxious and over-protective parenting. While previous studies supported the role of parenting styles in the development of SM, most of them examined child and parent factors in isolation. The current study examined how the interactions between child internalizing and externalizing behaviors (anxiety and oppositionality, respectively) and parenting style

Maternal periconception food insecurity and postpartum parenting stress and bonding outcomes.

Food insecurity during pregnancy is associated with various adverse pregnancy outcomes for the mother and infant, but less is known about the role of periconception food insecurity and its links to maternal and child wellbeing in the postpartum period. In a sample of 115 diverse (41% white) and predominately low-income mothers, results of hierarchical regression analyses showed that periconception food insecurity was positively associated with parenting stress at 2 months postpartum. A negative association between food insecurity and maternal-infant bonding at 6 months postpartum was mediated

Developmental Timing of Associations Among Parenting, Brain Architecture, and Mental Health.

IMPORTANCE: Parenting is associated with brain development and long-term health outcomes, although whether these associations depend on the developmental timing of exposure remains understudied. Identifying these sensitive periods can inform when and how parenting is associated with neurodevelopment and risk for mental illness. OBJECTIVE: To characterize how harsh and warm parenting during early, middle, and late childhood are associated with brain architecture during adolescence and, in turn, psychiatric symptoms in early adulthood during the COVID-19 pandemic. Parenting styles and psychological resilience: The mediating role of error monitoring.

Parenting styles are associated with children's psychological resilience. However, the underlying mechanisms of this have not been investigated. Parenting styles influence how individuals respond to self-inflicted errors, and error monitoring is related to psychological resilience. Therefore, this study proposed that error monitoring might be a bridging factor between parenting styles and psychological resilience. Seventy-two young healthy adults were recruited for this study. Parenting styles were assessed using the Parental Bonding Instrument, and psychological resilience was measured using
