Developing a novel co-produced methodology to understand 'real-world' help-seeking in online peer-peer communities by young people experiencing emotional abuse and neglect.

BACKGROUND: Recent systematic reviews suggest mediating factors (barriers and facilitators) of help-seeking for children and young people (CYP) with a range of mental health problems but highlight the need for a more robust methodology underpinned by theoretical frameworks. Emotional abuse and neglect is the most prevalent and pervasive form of abuse, with many CYP remaining unknown to professional services. These CYP are underrepresented in help-seeking research yet seek help from their peers via anonymous online publicly available message communities. OBJECTIVES: To sensitively co-develop q

Volunteer peer support frameworks supporting older women living alone.

Volunteer peer support is an approach that enables a supportive connection between volunteers and a sub-set of community members with shared experiences or interests. To implement co-designed strategies to support older women to maintain independence and optimise wellbeing in Australia, a volunteer peer support approach was proposed. There was limited literature describing volunteer peer support frameworks to underpin interventions of this kind; and given the increasing desire for engagement of individuals and communities, articulation of the key components of such a framework is warranted. The significance of early temperamental reactivity for children's social competence with peers: A meta-analytic review and comparison with the role of early attachment.

Early temperamental reactivity and attachment security are key predictors of children's social competence with peers. Leveraging meta-analytic evaluation of the significance of early attachment for social competence already available (Groh et al., 2014), this quantitative review examined the significance of early temperamental reactivity for social competence with peers and compared the strength of this association with that for attachment. Based on 140 independent samples (u = 382; N = 49,891), the meta-analytic association between early difficult temperament and (lower) social competence was

Elevating Equity and Inclusion for People With Intellectual Disabilities: A Nursing Student Sexual Health Promotion Project.

Organic solvents can cause hearing loss themselves or promote noise-induced hearing loss. The objective of this study was to review the literature on the effects of low-level exposure to trichloroethylene on the auditory system and consider its relevance for the occupational settings. Both human and animal investigations were evaluated only for realistic exposure concentrations based on the Quebec permissible exposure limits: 50 ppm 8-h time-weighed average exposure value (TWAEV) and 200 ppm short-term exposure value (STEV). In humans, the upper limit for considering ototoxicity data relevant

Peer relations and different functions of cyber-aggression: A longitudinal study in Chinese adolescents.

Although previous studies have focused on the associations between peer group relations and cyber-aggression, limited attention has been paid to the heterogeneity in the functions of cyber-aggression. This study explored the unique associations of peer relations with proactive and reactive cyber-aggression and the possible mechanisms underlying them in a sample of adolescents using a longitudinal study design. A total of 829 middle school students completed the Cyber-rage and Cyber-reward Aggression Subscales of the Cyber-Aggression Typology Questionnaire, the Peer Relations Scale, the Social …

The contribution of peer trainers to the Tree of Life project for young people living with Type 1 Diabetes: Building community.

This paper describes the involvement of peer trainers in Tree of Life groups for young people living with Type 1 Diabetes. The approach is informed by narrative therapy and collective narrative practice and principles, where people are seen as separate from problems and the focus is on creating opportunities for people to tell and witness one another's preferred identity stories. Young people who have participated in a Tree of Life day are invited to join the project as peer trainers who help facilitate, engage group participants, witness their stories and consult to the project. Sexuality and Gender Issues in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

This article reviews relevant literature on sexuality in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Findings reveal a growing awareness of desire for sexual and intimate relationships in individuals with ASD. However, core impairments of ASD lead to difficulties establishing requisite knowledge and skills necessary to attain a healthy sexuality and facilitate relationships. Consequently, individuals with ASD present with increased risk of engaging in inappropriate sexual behaviors and sexual victimization than their typically developing peers. The literature asserts the need to implement

Effective Peer Leader Attributes for the Promotion of Walking in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Peer-led interventions are promising for the promotion of physical activity behavior in older adults. However, little is known about the attributes of effective older peer leaders in such intervention programs. The objective was to determine what older adults perceive to be effective peer leader attributes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A mixed-methods concurrent triangulation design was used. Participants, aged 60 years and older, were recruited from retirement villages and existing walking groups in Western Australia. They were predominantly white, Australian-born,

Is dyslexia necessarily associated with negative feelings of self-worth? A review and implications for future research.

This paper will provide an overview of research in the past 20 years into the relationship between dyslexia and various aspects of self-perception, including self-concept, self-esteem, self-efficacy and locus of control. Problems are identified relating to the measurement of some of the most widely used constructs, as is the need for more precise identification of key variables relating to them. Critical issues concerning the assumptions that can be drawn from largely correlational data are highlighted also. The conclusion is drawn that an alternative approach to research in this area is requi

Participants (n = 36) with consistent Pre-conformist ego development levels during multiple adolescent assessments were studied to determine whether and how their ego levels had changed at age 25. Those (n = 12) whose ego levels remained at the Pre-conformist level were assigned to a life-course-persistent profound ego development arrest trajectory group; those (n = 24) whose ego levels reached the Conformist or Post-conformist level at age 25 were assigned to an adolescence-limited profound ego development arrest trajectory group. From Friends to Feelings: Negative Peer Influence on Student Boredom and the Moderating Roles of Teacher-Student Relationship Quality and Cognitive Ability.

While emotions are socially shaped, research on academic emotions has neglected the potential influence of peer emotions. This study investigated whether students' boredom is influenced by their classroom friends' boredom and whether teacher-student relationship quality and cognitive ability moderate these influences. Participants were 3415 7th Grade students (Mage = 12.44(0.45); 49.69% females) from 27 Flemish schools. Longitudinal social network analyses demonstrated peer influence effects on academic boredom, controlling for selection and network effects. Teacher-student relationship qualit

The Social Processes of Excessive Online Gaming Homophily: Peer Selection or Influence?

Adolescents who befriend online game using peers may be at risk for initiated and continued excessive game use (online gaming use homophily). The present article examined how adolescents' severity of online gaming use related to their friends' online gaming behavior bi-directionally across a semester (peer selection or peer influence effect). Students from two universities completed three waves of online surveys within four and a half months (N = 3079; 33.6% female; Mage = 19.16; SD = 0.97). Random-intercepts, Cross-Lagged Panel Model (RI-CLPM) analyses revealed that peer selection and peer in

Assessment of the Reporting Quality of Randomized Controlled Trials on Peer Tutoring in Medical Education.

AIMS/BACKGROUND: Peer tutoring (PT) has been increasingly adopted as an innovative pedagogical approach in medical education. However, the methodological rigor and reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating PT remain unclear. This study aimed to assess the reporting quality of PT-related RCTs using the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) 2010 guidelines. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science was conducted to identify RCTs that investigated PT interventions among medical students, focusing on publications after 2010. Is suicidality contagious? The social transmission of suicidal thoughts and behaviors: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Suicide is a major public health problem and exposure to suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) within the social network might increase individual risk. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to quantitatively examine associations between exposure to STBs in friends, peers, and acquaintances, and own STBs. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, PsycInfo, EMBASE, Scopus, CINAHL, and PubMed (inception-May 6, 2024, updated on November 5, 2025, and on February 22, 2026). We included observational studies reporting suicide-related outcomes for individuals exposed to STBs of friends

Enabling Recovery Following Peer-Perpetrated Sexual Violence: Lived Experiences of Young Women in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: Peer-perpetrated sexual violence is very common in young adult relationships. In Sweden, one in four young women has experienced sexual violence, and it is a leading cause of mental health issues among young women today. Knowledge about how recovery is enabled for young women with experience of peer-perpetrated sexual violence remains limited. The primary emphasis of caring is to support health and well-being and to contribute to recovery; therefore, understanding the meaning of how recovery is enabled is essential when caring for these young women. AIM: The aim of this study is

Outreach has emerged as an essential response to reach marginalised populations and remove barriers to health care. In the field of addiction medicine, this approach has been rethought to address the intertwined vulnerabilities and complex needs of people experiencing marginalisation and drug use. In this context, effective outreach is possible within a strong collaboration between health, social and security actors, and by fully integrating peer support, opening up important and innovative collaborations between these actors to adapt addiction policies and services to the realities on the gro

"You are helping from the heart not just from the head": a systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis of the experiences of peer workers working with people experiencing homelessness and substance use.

BACKGROUND: Increasingly, substance use and homelessness services have peer workers, those with lived or living experience of substance use and homelessness, who provide support to those experiencing similar challenges. While research regarding the effectiveness of such peer workers in helping others achieve better outcomes is growing, little is known about their experiences in this role. METHODS: A systematic review and qualitative evidence synthesis was conducted to better understand the experiences of peer workers who have lived/living experience of substance use and homelessness who are p

Early insight into social network structure predicts climbing the social ladder.

While occupying an influential position within one's social network brings many advantages, it is unknown how certain individuals rise in social prominence. Leveraging a longitudinal dataset that tracks an entirely new network of college freshmen (N = 187), we test whether "climbing the social ladder" depends on knowing how other people are connected to each other. Those who ultimately come to occupy the most influential positions exhibit early and accurate representations of their network's general, abstract structure (i.e., who belongs to which communities and cliques). In contrast, detailed
