An all-perovskite tandem cell based on narrow-bandgap mixed tin-lead (Sn-Pb) alloyed perovskites is a potential photovoltaic device whose power conversion efficiency can exceed the Shockley-Queisser limit of a single-junction solar cell, 33%. However, comprehensive descriptions of the charge-carrier mobilities and transport mechanisms in the mixed Sn-Pb perovskite system remain elusive. Herein, we integrate density functional theory (DFT) calculations with charge transport models to provide more insight into the electronic structures and transport behaviors of these materials. We specifically

The control of spin relaxation mechanisms is of great importance for spintronics applications as well as for fundamental studies. Layered metal-halide perovskites represent an emerging class of semiconductors with rich optical spin physics, showing potential for spintronic applications. However, a major hurdle arises in layered metal-halide perovskites with strong spin-orbit coupling, where the spin lifetime becomes extremely short due to D'yakonov-Perel' scattering and Bir-Aronov-Pikus at high carrier density. Using the circularly polarized pump-probe transient reflection technique, we experi

The binary compound of GeTe emerging as a potential medium-temperature thermoelectric material has drawn a great deal of attention. Here, we achieve ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance in In and a heavy content of Cu codoped GeTe thermoelectrics. In dopants improve the density of state near the surface of Femi of GeTe by introducing resonant levels, producing a sharp increase of the Seebeck coefficient. In and Cu codoping not only optimizes carrier concentration but also substantially increases carrier mobility to a high value of 87 cm2 V-1 s-1 due to the

Although strong nonlinear interactions between quantized excitations are an important resource for quantum technologies based on bosonic oscillator modes, most electromagnetic and mechanical nonlinearities are far too weak to allow for nonlinear effects to be observed at the single-quantum level. This limitation has been overcome in electromagnetic resonators by coupling them to other strongly nonlinear quantum systems such as atoms and superconducting qubits. We demonstrate the realization of the single-phonon nonlinear regime in a solid-state mechanical system. The single-phonon anharmonicit

The present work investigates the interfacial and atomic layer-dependent mechanical properties, SOC-entailing phonon band structure, and comprehensive electron-topological-elastic integration of ZrTe2 and NiTe2. The anisotropy of Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, and shear modulus are analyzed using density functional theory with the TB-mBJ approximation. NiTe2 has higher mechanical property values and greater anisotropy than ZrTe2. Phonon dispersion analysis with SOC effects predicts the dynamic stability of both compounds. Thus, the current research unifies electronic band structure analysis

Tin-based intermetallics with tunnel frameworks containing zigzag Na chains that excite correlated rattling impinging on the framework phonons are attractive as thermoelectric materials owing to their low lattice thermal conductivity. The correlated rattling of Na atoms in the zigzag chains and the origin of the low thermal conductivity is uncovered via experimental and computational analyses. The Na atoms behave as oscillators along the tunnel, resulting in substantial interactions between Na atoms in the chain and between the chain and framework. In these intermetallic compounds, a shorter i…

When cooling towards a ferroelectric phase transition, collective atomic motions (phonons) slow down (soften) until a static atomic displacement pattern forms, giving rise to spontaneous polarization throughout the material1. However, in quantum paraelectrics such as strontium titanate (SrTiO3), long-range ferroelectric order does not develop at low temperatures due to persistent quantum fluctuations of ionic positions2,3. In SrTiO3, quantum paraelectricity emerges below Tq ≈ 40 K refs. 4-6 and is preceded by anomalous phonon dynamics: a transverse acoustic phonon mode partially softens at a f…

Two-dimensional (2D) metal-halide perovskites with spin-dependent optical properties hold great promise for spintronic and quantum applications. However, their spin lifetimes, especially for n = 1 2D perovskites, are typically limited to subpicosecond time scales due to rapid spin relaxation driven by strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), electron-hole exchange interactions, and phonon-mediated scattering. Here, we demonstrate that type-II ligand-perovskite heterostructures overcome these constraints by reducing electron-hole wave function overlap and exciton binding energy. Compared to the type-I

Modeling perovskites as solar cell absorbers has become popular due to the breakthrough of methylammonium lead iodide (CH3NH3PbI3). In this study, we modeled a tetramethylammonium lead iodide (CH3)4NPbI3 structure. We further confirmed the stability of the structure by determining the phonon dispersion using density functional perturbation theory. We calculated the spin-orbit and non-spin-orbit coupling-based electronic structure using the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional within the generalized gradient approximation of the density functional theory and the self-consisten

Ordered phases give rise to collective modes and quasiparticles, such as spin waves and magnons emerging from magnetic order. Extending this paradigm to ferroelectrics suggests the existence of polarization waves and their fundamental quanta, ferrons. A coherent ferron-that is, a polarization wave-modulates the magnitude of the electric polarization and is thus an amplitude (Higgs) mode of the ferroelectric order. Here we observe coherent ferrons from the pulsed laser excitation of van der Waals ferroelectrics, NbOI2 and WO2Br2. We demonstrate two complementary manifestations of coherent ferro

In two-dimensional magnets, the ultrafast photoexcited method represents a low-power and high-speed method of switching magnetic states. Bilayer CrI3 (BLC) is an ideal platform for studying ultrafast photoinduced magnetic phase transitions due to its stacking-dependent magnetic properties. Here, by using time-dependent density functional theory, we explore the photoexcitation phase transition in BLC from the R- to M-stacked phase. This process is found to be induced by electron-phonon interactions. The activated Ag and Bg phonon modes in the xy direction drive the horizontal relative displacem

Recent experiments have set a new record for the transition temperature at which a material (hydrogen sulfide, H3S) becomes superconducting. Moreover, a pronounced isotope shift of T C in D3S is evidence of an existence of phonon-mediated pairing mechanism of superconductivity that is consistent with the well established Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer scenario. Herein, we reported a theoretical studies of the influence of the substitution of 32S atoms by the heavier isotopes 33S, 34S and 36S on the electronic properties, lattice dynamics and superconducting critical temperature of H3S. There are tw

Improving the thermal management of small-scale devices requires developing materials with high thermal conductivities. The semiconductor boron arsenide (BAs) is an attractive target because of ab initio calculation indicating that single crystals have an ultrahigh thermal conductivity. We synthesized BAs single crystals without detectable defects and measured a room-temperature thermal conductivity of 1300 watts per meter-kelvin. Our spectroscopy study, in conjunction with atomistic theory, reveals that the distinctive band structure of BAs allows for very long phonon mean free paths and stro

The structural, electronic, magnetic, elastic, phonon, and thermoelectric properties of the quaternary Heusler alloys RuGdMnAl and CoHfVGa were investigated using spin-polarized density functional theory within the FP-LAPW method implemented in the WIEN2k package. The dynamical stability of both compounds was confirmed by phonon dispersion calculations, which show the absence of imaginary phonon modes throughout the Brillouin zone. Thermodynamic stability was confirmed through negative formation energies, while the calculated elastic parameters satisfy the Born-Huang criteria, indicating mecha

The breaking of inversion symmetry combined with spin-orbit coupling, can give rise to intriguing quantum phases and collective excitations. Here, we report systematic temperature dependent Raman scattering and theoretical calculations of phonon modes across the inversion symmetry-breaking structural transitions in a quasi-one-dimensional compound (TaSe4)3I. Our investigation revealed the emergence of three additional Raman-active modes in Raman spectra of the low-temperature non-centrosymmetric (NC) structure of the material. From polarization dependent Raman spectra and phonon mode symmetry

In this paper, a comparative study of the electron energy loss rate (ELR) in zinc-based chalcogenide (ZnS, ZnSe, and ZnTe) and cadmium-based chalcogenide (CdS, CdSe, and CdTe) quantum wells owing to interaction with optical phonons in a quantising magnetic field is carried out by employing the electronic temperature model. The dependence of the electron ELR on the material slab thickness, quantizing magnetic field, surface electronic concentration, and electronic temperature in ZnS, ZnSe, and ZnTe as well as in CdS, CdSe, and CdTe materials is obtained and compared in detail. Our findings offe…

Ultrafast time-resolved absorption spectroscopy is used to investigate exciton dynamics in CdSe nanocrystal films. The effects of morphology, quantum-dot versus quantum-rod, and preparation of nanocrystals in a thin film form are investigated. The measurements revealed longer intraband exciton relaxation in quantum-rods than in quantum-dots. The slowed relaxation in quantum-rods is due to mitigation of the Auger-relaxation mechanism from elongating the nanocrystal. In addition, the nanocrystal thin film showed long-lived confined acoustic phonons corresponding to the ellipsoidal breathing mode…

Laser-induced phase transitions offer pathways of phase transitions that are inaccessible by conventional stimuli. In this Letter, we conduct ab initio simulations to numerically demonstrate a novel laser-induced structural transformation: converting a bulk crystal into a layered van der Waals material using intense light pulses. The transition is driven by a nonlinear phononic mechanism, where selectively exciting polar and antipolar phonon modes with polarized terahertz light breaks targeted interlayer bonds while preserving intralayer ones. We identify that strong anisotropy in bond sensiti

A common strategy for reducing the thermal conductivity of polycrystalline systems is to increase the number of grain boundaries. Indeed, grain boundaries enhance the probability of phonon scattering events, which has been applied to control the thermal transport in a wide range of materials, including hard metals, diamond, oxides, and two-dimensional (2D) systems such as graphene. Here, the opposite behavior in improper ferroelectric ErMnO3 polycrystals is reported, where the thermal conductivity decreases with increasing grain size. This unusual relationship between heat transport and micros
