PURPOSE: This paper synthesises literature on non-visual effects of light in prison environments, drawing attention to disconnect between research evidence and current practices. This paper aims to guide prison designers and decision-makers towards lighting strategies that better support inmates' mental health and rehabilitation.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A focused literature search was conducted from June to October 2024 using Google Scholar and PubMed, targeting peer-reviewed studies published between 1985 and 2024. Included studies addressed the non-visual effects of light related to ci

The medical needs of the incarcerated population in the United States are growing, requiring appropriate management within the carceral health care system. This article examines adherence to prescribing guidelines for common vascular risk factors among incarcerated patients referred for vascular surgery evaluation in North Carolina between 2019 and 2023. Medical records of 57 patients with noncoronary atherosclerotic disease were reviewed. At referral, 66.6% were prescribed an antiplatelet agent, and 61.4% were on a statin, with 49.1% receiving both. Among the 82.5% with hypertension, 87.2% we

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Semistructured qualitative interviews were conducted among clinicians involved in delivering cancer care in US prisons, including prison medical directors, primary care practitioners (PCPs), and oncologists i…

The Spanish prison system faces a growing challenge regarding the mental health of inmates, especially those convicted of crimes related to Islamist terrorism. A recent study by the Elcano Royal Institute, based on interviews with twenty-four inmates, has revealed the psychological complexities involved in the reintegration of these prisoners, particularly those who have renounced jihadist ideology. This analysis not only addresses the difficulties in the deradicalization process but also underscores the need for effective mental health strategies that address the emotional and psychological d

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of psychiatric disorders among prisoners remains a major public health issue worldwide. In France, despite the increasing number of persons who are incarcerated (+30% between 1992 and 2002 with a 120% prison overcrowding), and a historical concern about the mental health of persons in detention and its management, no systematic review has been published on this subject. The aim of this article is to present the results of a systematic review of the literature on the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in French prisons.
METHOD: The reporting of this systematic rev…

People deprived of liberty have among the highest rates of tuberculosis globally. The incidence of tuberculosis is ten times greater than the incidence of tuberculosis in the general population. In 2021, WHO updated its guidance to strongly recommend systematic screening for tuberculosis in prisons and penitentiary systems. Which case-finding strategies should be adopted, and how to effectively implement these strategies in these settings, will be crucial questions facing ministries of health and justice. In this Viewpoint, we review the evidence base for tuberculosis screening and diagnostic …

This study aimed to describe Pará's Prison Health. This ecological time series study was based on secondary data with unrestricted access from Institutional Reports of the Penitentiary System and information from the Pará Transparency Web Portal, the National Register of Health Facilities (CNES), and the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN). As a result, we observed a population with a majority of less-educated young black and brown males. In absolute numbers, we observed an increase of health professionals who did not follow the prison population hike. When entered into statistical

In Australian prisons approximately 20% of inmates are chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV), providing an important population for targeted treatment and prevention. A dynamic mathematical model of HCV transmission was used to assess the impact of increasing direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment uptake on HCV incidence and prevalence in the prisons in New South Wales, Australia, and to assess the cost-effectiveness of alternate treatment strategies. We developed four separate models reflecting different average prison lengths of stay (LOS) of 2, 6, 24, and 36 months. Each model …

BACKGROUND: The current COVID-19 pandemic is not the first time New South Wales prisons have faced contagion. This paper examines the current responses in New South Wales prisons to the threat of COVID-19 to prisoner health, by contrasting contemporary activities with actions and policy developed during two historical epidemics: the influenza epidemic of 1860 and pandemic of 1919.
METHOD: Epidemiological information relating to cases of disease in NSW prisons during the 1860 and 1919 influenza epidemics was obtained from the Comptroller-General's reports for the specific outbreak years and fo…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate mass screening campaigns for tuberculosis in prisoners in Ecuador.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Cross-sectional study of Chronic Cough (CC) detected amongst inmates who entered two prisons in Ecuador between January and December 2016 (n = 12,365). The time distribution of the CCs was analyzed with the uniformity test and its relationship with the diagnosed cases of PTB, the prevalence of PTB was calculated. A logistic regression model was performed to determine the factors modifiers of PTB positivity.
RESULTS: 1.332 chronic cougher were recorded, the positivity rate was 17.3% …

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen and 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists are administered as standard prophylaxes for postoperative pain, nausea, and vomiting. Preclinical studies, however, suggest that 5-HT3 antagonists may compromise acetaminophen's analgesic effect. This hospital registry study investigates whether 5-HT3 antagonists mitigate the analgesic effect of prophylactic acetaminophen in a perioperative setting.
METHODS: This study included 55,016 adult patients undergoing general anesthesia for ambulatory procedures at a tertiary healthcare center in Massachusetts from
