Effect of chronic handling and social isolation on emotion and cognition in adolescent rats.

Adolescence is a critical period of establishing social relations through social interactions that affect the emotional development associated with stress responses, anxiety, depression, and cognitive development. We investigated the behavioral and neurobiological changes induced by handling and social isolation in adolescent rats to determine social interaction effects. Rats were randomly divided into groups and used as a control, a handling, and a social isolation group. After 12 weeks, the handling group showed a significant increase in mobility in the open field test and in tryptophan hydr

A Machine-Learning-Based Analysis of the Relationships between Loneliness Metrics and Mobility Patterns for Elderly.

Loneliness and social isolation are subjective measures associated with the feeling of discomfort and distress. Various factors associated with the feeling of loneliness or social isolation are: the built environment, long-term illnesses, the presence of disabilities or health problems, etc. One of the most important aspect which could impact feelings of loneliness is mobility. In this paper, we present a machine-learning based approach to classify the user loneliness levels using their indoor and outdoor mobility patterns. User mobility data has been collected based on indoor and outdoor sens

Upper extremity neuro-rehabilitation through the use of power mobility.

Power mobility is typically used as an accommodative form of assistive technology allowing individuals with impaired ambulation to remain mobile. While research has focused on the cognitive development and social benefits of power mobility for individuals with developmental disabilities, research is lacking on using this technology to rehabilitate physical dysfunction. Recent technology, such as robot-mediated neuro-rehabilitation, is proving effective in upper extremity rehabilitation, but lacks the movement feedback of power mobility. This article presents a case study of a client with cereb

Impact of Abdominoplasty on the Quality of Life Among Postbariatric Surgery Patients.

BACKGROUND: Postbariatric surgery weight loss has significant impact on physical, functional, and psychosocial components, which may negatively affect quality of life (QoL). Abdominoplasty is one of the promising procedures that may lead to positive impacts on overall QoL. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective cohort study of 100 post bariatric surgery patients, aged 27-59 years with a body mass index of up to 30 kg/m2, were selected. QoL was evaluated using a modified version of the Impact of Weight on Quality of Life-Lite questionnaire, adapted to a "satisfied" or "unsatisfied" response f

Housing, Poverty, and Health Outcomes.

Poverty and homelessness have significant impacts on the health outcomes of individuals and communities. Lack of safe, healthy, affordable housing in Sussex County requires attention and action to move the needle on the health of our impoverished and housing insecure populations. Health concerns descend on the scale of importance when an individual's housing and financial circumstances are unstable. Employment opportunities exist, however, housing costs in the area are prohibitive resulting in negative impacts on an individual's potential for social mobility as well as on local businesses and …

Outcome following a second hip fracture.

Hip fracture has a significant impact on medical resources and patient morbidity and mortality. Few patients admitted with a hip fracture are considered for prophylactic measures aimed at the reduction of further fracture risk. Currently, 10-13% of patients will later sustain a second hip fracture. In considering the possible role of prophylactic measures in the prevention of second hip fracture, we investigated whether second hip fracture has a significant further impact on patients' mobility and social independence. We also sought to identify a pattern to second hip fracture that may allow t

Evaluation of a smartphone application for self-help for patients with social anxiety disorder: a randomized controlled study-SMASH.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) is as effective as a stand-alone treatment and helps facilitating access to treatment. Given the complexity of the treatment, we argue that the effect of ICBT could be even greater if guided by a therapist, as this could increase treatment adherence. We modified an established and well-evaluated treatment approach and developed a mobile application for treating social anxiety disorder (SAD). In the present study, we compare the efficacy of app use alone (APP) with video-based, therapist-guided app use

Perceptions of power mobility use and safety within residential facilities.

BACKGROUND: Power wheelchairs enhance quality of life by enabling occupation, improving self-esteem and facilitating social interaction. Despite these benefits, the risks associated with power mobility use raise serious concerns in residential facilities. PURPOSE: As there is no gold standard to assess when a client is unsafe, a two-phase study was conducted to develop client-centred guidelines for power mobility use. METHOD: In the first phase of the study, presented here, 18 in-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with a variety of stakeholders, including power mobility users, othe

Educational constraints on marital sorting and income mobility.

This paper examines the effect of educational assortative mating on overall income mobility in terms of both inter- and intragenerational mobility. In recent years, educational assortative mating has become a trend in China, and this marital sorting pattern not only contributes to marriage stability but is also related to increased income mobility. Educational assortative mating affects the distribution of educational resources among families with diffferent educational qualifications. Families with higher educational qualifications have more educational resources, thus obtaining a more solid

Game-changing perspectives: A dataset on student perceptions of sustainable mobility pre- and post escape room intervention.

The dataset aims to examine the prior and acquired knowledge in an Escape Room (ER) experience on sustainable mobility. In addition, the data could also be used to identify possible correspondences between some mobility behaviors and the predisposition to learn sustainable mobility concepts to foster attitude change. To meet these objectives, an ER on sustainable mobility was conducted and a questionnaire was given before and after the activity to 173 students from various schools between 5th grade of primary school and 1st year of compulsory secondary school (10-13 years old). The questionnai

Redefining working identity in career transitions: The role of mindfulness and self-regulation.

Career transitions require individuals to fundamentally redefine their working identity-the amalgam of professional roles, relationships, and narratives that constitutes one's sense of self at work. Although Ibarra's seminal "test-and-learn" model has advanced the current understanding of how identity transitions unfold, the psychological mechanisms that enable or constrain this process remain underspecified. The purpose of this research paper is to develop a propositional theoretical framework that integrates mindfulness and self-regulation into the working identity transition process. Drawin

App-based interventions to improve cancer outcomes rely on informational support from professionals: a systematic review.

The importance of social support for cancer patients is well-established, and mobile applications hold promise for implementation. This systematic review examines app-based interventions with social support components for cancer patients, investigating the use of different support functions from different sources and the impact on cancer-related symptoms and psychological outcomes. A systematic search across five databases (EMBASE, Scopus, PsycINFO, PubMed, Web of Science) yielded 449 records, of which 17 studies (12 controlled designs) were included. Two independent reviewers extracted data a

Factors associated with social participation among community-dwelling frail older adults in Japan: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, it has become clear that participation in social activities by the older adult suppresses their need for long-term care. Likewise, social participation can promote long-term care prevention among frail older adults who are at a higher risk of needing long-term care. However, their social participation rate is low, and the factors causing these low rates of participation are unclear. Therefore, this study identifies the factors affecting social participation of frail older adults. METHODS: After excluding those certified as requiring long-term care, 28,636 older ad

Lockdown impact on lifestyle and its association with oral parafunctional habits and bruxism in a Spanish adolescent population.

AIM: To analyse the possible association between decreased physical and social activity and an increase in the use of mobile devices, internet, and social networks with increased anxiety and the appearance of oral parafunctions and bruxism for adolescents before and during COVID-19. DESIGN: A total of 213 adolescents attended private clinics at two different times: before lockdown (T0) and after completion of total lockdown (T1). In T0 and T1, a clinical examination was carried out to assess dental wear (IA) and only in T1 were they given the self-report questionnaire which focuses on the per

The Role of Mobility in HIV Intervention Engagement and Community Mobilization among Female Sex Workers Living with HIV in the Dominican Republic.

Female sex workers (FSWs) are often a mobile population, but the role of mobility in influencing FSW social capital outcomes-defined here as engagement with HIV intervention activities and community mobilization-remains unclear. To date, the evidence is mixed, with mobility both facilitating and hindering community engagement, depending on the context. This study is the first to employ a mixed-methods approach to examine how mobility impacts these outcomes. We combined baseline survey data from 211 FSWs living with HIV with semi-structured interview data from a sub-cohort of 20 FSWs in Santo D
