Twenty-four patients ranging from 28 to 56 years of age with Garden grade III or IV fractures of the femoral neck are reviewed after treatment by intertrocherantic valgus osteotomy and Richards sliding compression hip screw. From 1989 to 1996, 275 patients (245 male and 20 female) with back pain symptoms and spondylolysis of the lumbar spine were reviewed. All patients were evaluated by a protocol that included nonoperative treatment, bone scan, and pars injection. Soft-tissue injuries and defects associated with severe fractures of the tibia treated with the Hoffmann external fixator were reviewed. Of 84 cases of open tibia fractures (classified as Gustilo's Type II and III), 54 patients with 55 injured limbs required soft-tissue reconstruction other than skin grafts or small rotational flaps. OBJECTIVES: We previously presented early results employing a technique designed for beating heart, ventricular volume reduction (surgical ventricular restoration, SVR) without ventriculotomy for patients with antero-septal scar and dilated ischaemic cardiomyopathy. Sternal dehiscence is an important complication of cardiac surgery. A simple mathematical analysis is described for determining the relative strength (S) of different types of sternal closure. This is based upon resolving the tensions within the segments of a sternal wire to derive a dehiscence force. We reviewed the cases of 107 patients who underwent surgical treatment of an isolated fracture of the olecranon. Fifty-three patients were treated by primary excision and fifty-four, by open reduction and internal fixation by various methods. An adult, male snowy owl ( Bubo scandiacus) was found down and unable to fly in western New York State. Physical examination and radiographs revealed a subacute, open wound and fractured major and minor metacarpals of the right wing. A minimal type II external skeletal fixator (ESF) device was placed on the right major metacarpal bone and the open wound was allowed to granulate and close.
