Electrolytic lesions of the medial septal region leads to an unusual neuronal reorganization in which peripheral sympathetic fibers, originating from the superior cervical ganglia, grow into the cholinergically denervated areas of the hippocampus. Since these lesions disrupt cells and fibers of passage which are non-cholinergic, there has been a debate whether Hippocampal Sympathetic Ingrowth is due only to cholinergic denervation of the hippocampus. Using the intraseptal administration of 192-IgG-Saporin, a specific cholinergic neurotoxin, we have found that hippocampal sympathetic ingrowth o

Axonal regeneration is normally limited after injuries to CNS white matter. Infusion of neurotrophins has been successful in promoting regenerative growth through injured white matter but this growth generally fails to extend beyond the infusion site. These observations are consistent with a chemotropic effect of these factors on axonal growth and support the prevailing view that neurotrophin-induced axonal regeneration requires the use of gradients, i.e., gradually increasing neurotrophin levels along the target fiber tract. To examine the potential of global overexpression of neurotrophins t

GABA(A) channels are ubiquitously expressed on neuronal cells and act via an inward chloride current to hyperpolarize the cell membrane of mature neurons. Expression and function of GABA(A) channels on airway smooth muscle cells has been demonstrated in vitro. Airway smooth muscle cell membrane hyperpolarization contributes to relaxation. We hypothesized that muscimol, a selective GABA(A) agonist, could act on endogenous GABA(A) channels expressed on airway smooth muscle to attenuate induced increases in airway pressures in anesthetized guinea pigs in vivo. In an effort to localize muscimol's

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The central and peripheral nervous systems are often affected in intensive care unit (ICU) patients, especially those with prolonged assisted ventilation and sepsis or systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). The autonomic nervous system, however, has been under-investigated in such patients. We evaluated autonomic nervous system (ANS) function in 29 ICU patients with various neurological disorders.
METHODS: Testing involved cardiac R-R variation (CRRV) as an index of parasympathetic function and the sympathetic skin response (SSR) for sympathetic assessment.

In the paracervical ganglion (PCG) of the rat, double-labelling immunofluorescence for catecholamine-synthesizing enzymes and HPLC measurement of catecholamine contents were first performed to evaluate whether intraganglionic small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells are capable of synthesizing adrenaline. Immunolabelling for tyrosine hydroxylase (TH), dopamine beta-hydroxylase and phenylethanolamine-N-methyl transferase (PNMT) occurred in all SIF cells of the PCG, thus demonstrating the presence of all the enzymes required for adrenaline biosynthesis. Adrenaline levels were undetectable in the

Our group recently demonstrated that maternal high-fat diet (HFD) consumption is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, increased apoptosis, and changes in gluconeogenic gene expression and chromatin structure in fetal nonhuman primate (NHP) liver. However, little is known about the long-term effects that a HFD has on hepatic nervous system development in offspring, a system that plays an important role in regulating hepatic metabolism. Utilizing immunohistochemistry and Real-Time PCR, we quantified sympathetic nerve fiber density, apoptosis, inflammation, and other autonomic compo

Cold sensation and numbness have been reported as post-stroke sensory sequelae attributable to distal axonopathy, which is caused by chronic ischemia of diseased limbs resulting from dysfunction of vasomotor regulatory systems. Keishibukuryogan is a traditional herbal medicine used to treat symptoms of peripheral ischemia such as cold extremities. This study investigated clinical improvement and skin temperature in peripheral ischemia patients to determine the efficacy of keishibukuryogan in alleviating post-stroke cold sensation and numbness. Twenty-two stroke patients with cold sensation and

Peripheral nerve injury has been shown to result in sympathetic fibre sprouting around dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons. It has been suggested that this anomalous sympathetic fibre innervation of the DRG plays a role in neuropathic pain. Other studies have suggested an interaction between sympathetic and sensory fibres more peripherally. To date, no anatomical study of these possible interactions in the terminal fields of sensory and sympathetic fibres has been performed; therefore, the authors set out to study them in the rat lower lip after bilateral lesions of a sensory nerve, the mental n

BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) is a treatment option for men with stage 1 or 2 testis cancer and the standard of care for men with postchemotherapy retroperitoneal residual disease. Given the morbidity of RPLND, four important surgical modifications have been proposed: minimally invasive access, nerve-sparing resection, template resection, and en-bloc resection.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical steps and perioperative outcomes of robotic nerve-sparing unilateral template RPLND with en-bloc resection (roboRPLND-NS+).
DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: From 2017 to

INTRODUCTION: Autonomic neuropathy is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of slow-transit constipation, but other gastrointestinal organs may also be involved, even if they are symptom-free. We investigated whether motility in gastrointestinal organs other than the colon was impaired in patients with slow-transit constipation and whether the autonomic nervous system was involved.
METHODS: Twenty-one consecutive patients (18 females; median age, 46 years) with severe chronic constipation (< or = 2 defecations/week and delayed colonic transit time) were studied. Autonomic neuropathy func

BACKGROUND: Repetitive and stressful work tasks have been linked to the development of pain in the trapezius muscle, although the underlying mechanisms still remain unclear. In earlier studies, it has been hypothesized that chronic muscle pain conditions are associated with imbalance in the autonomic nervous system, predominantly expressed as an increased sympathetic activity. This study investigates whether women with chronic trapezius myalgia show higher muscle activity and increased sympathetic tone at baseline and during repetitive low-force work and psychosocial stress, compared with pain

A 54-year-old woman who underwent chest tube placement after a lung biopsy was found on the first postoperative day to have ipsilateral ptosis and miosis, suggesting a Horner syndrome. A chest CT scan showed that the tip of the chest tube was apposed to the stellate ganglion. Repositioning of the chest tube later on the first postoperative day led to complete reversal of the Horner syndrome within 24 hours. We propose that the Horner syndrome arose as a result of pressure on the stellate ganglion, which interrupted neural conduction but did not sever the sympathetic pathway ("neurapraxia"). Wh

The effect of action potentials on the calcium concentration in the somata of chick ciliary neurons ([Ca2+]s) was determined by loading these with the calcium indicator calcium green-1. Following trains of 1-10 impulses (30 Hz) to the postganglionic nerve, the [Ca2+]s increased rapidly and then declined along a single exponential with a time constant of 0.70 +/- 0.04 s (fast phase). After trains of 20 or 50 impulses, the elevated [Ca2+]s declined as the sum of two exponentials, with time constants of 0.78 +/- 0.12 s (fast phase) and 4.0 +/- 0.4 s (moderate phase). After a 600-impulse postgangl

AIMS: Cardiac sympathetic overactivation is an important trigger of ventricular arrhythmias in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Our previous study demonstrated that N-type calcium (Cav2.2) currents in cardiac sympathetic post-ganglionic (CSP) neurons were increased in CHF. This study investigated the contribution of Cav2.2 channels in cardiac sympathetic overactivation and ventricular arrhythmogenesis in CHF.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Rat CHF was induced by surgical ligation of the left coronary artery. Lentiviral Cav2.2-α shRNA or scrambled shRNA was transfected in vivo into stellate ga

As neurones develop they are faced with choices as to which genes to express, to match their final phenotype to their role in the nervous system. A number of processes can guide these decisions. Within the autonomic and sensory nervous systems, there are a handful of examples that suggest that one mechanism that may match phenotype to function is the presence of target-derived differentiation factors. We tested whether the rat pineal gland controls the expression of a neuropeptide (neuropeptide Y) and a calcium-binding protein (calbindin) in sympathetic postganglionic neurones that innervate i

Aging is associated with a decline in immune function (immunosenescence), a condition known to correlate with increased incidence of cancer as well as infectious and degenerative diseases. Innate, cellular and humoral immunity all exhibit increased deterioration with age. Circulating melatonin decreases with age, and in recent years much interest has been focused on its immunomodulatory effect. Melatonin stimulates the production of progenitor cells for granulocytes and macrophages. It also stimulates the production of natural killer cells and CD4+ cells and inhibits CD8+ cells. The production
