Temperament, character and suicide attempts in anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and major depression.

OBJECTIVE: We examined the relation between personality traits as measured by the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and a reported history of suicide attempts in women with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and major depression. METHOD: We compared the prevalence and severity of suicide attempts in women with anorexia nervosa (n = 68), bulimia nervosa (n = 152) and major depression with no history of an eating disorder (n = 59), and we examined the relation between the TCI scales and suicide attempts. RESULTS: Comparable numbers of women across the three groups had attempted suicide.…

Temperament of preterm infants: its relationship to perinatal factors and one-year outcome.

We studied preterm infants to determine whether they have more difficult temperaments than term infants, and whether temperament is related to perinatal factors and to later performance on infants tests. Parents of 98 preterm and 89 full-term infants completed the Toddler Temperament Scale (TTS) when their children were 12 months post-term. Ninety-five of the 98 preterm infants also received the Bayley Scales of infant Development and were diagnosed as to the presence and severity of cerebral palsy (CP) at one year post-term. Preterm and full-term infants did not differ significantly on overal…

The Marke-Nyman temperament scale. Evaluation of transferability using the Rasch item analysis.

The purpose of this study was to test the transferability of the Marke-Nymann Temperament Scale (MNTS) using the Rasch item analysis. The results showed that the three Sjöbring personality dimensions Validity, Stability, and Solidity measured by the MNTS were without transferability. However, the item analysis demonstrated a subscale for each of the three Sjöbring dimensions having adequate transferability, i.e. the subscales continued to test the same dimension in different groups of patients. These subscales still cover much of the range of the original descriptions by Sjöbring.

Effectiveness of temperament based therapy with support: a randomized controlled trial study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Temperament-Based Therapy with Support (TBT-S) is a neurobiologically informed, skills-based intervention for eating disorders in which individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) and their supports participate together in a multi-family group format over five consecutive days. The program is delivered as an adjunct to treatment as usual (TAU). Although prior studies have demonstrated the feasibility, acceptability, and promising outcomes of TBT-S, its effectiveness remains uncertain, as no previous studies have included a control group. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of …

Maternal history of maltreatment interacts with DNA methylation patterns to predict infant temperament.

BACKGROUND: Maternal childhood maltreatment (CM) has been associated with subsequent difficult infant temperament. Further, maternal CM and maladaptive infant outcomes have each been linked, separately, to increased methylation in umbilical cord blood of CpG sites in genes related to the stress response and inflammatory markers. Researchers have not yet examined the nature of the interactions of these factors or whether DNA methylation (DNAm) mediates or moderates the association of maternal CM with infant temperament. OBJECTIVE: We tested whether DNAm mediates or moderates the association be…

Trait continuity: Can parent-rated infant temperament predict HEXACO personality in early adulthood?

Examining the Raine cohort study, we tested the trait continuity hypothesis by examining the extent that young adults' (25-29 years old) self-reported HEXACO personality can be statistically predicted from multi-dimensional parental temperament ratings collected in infancy (1-2 years old). The study incorporated a lagged design (two waves), a large sample size (n = 563), and examined both temperament and personality as both dimensions and profiles. Overall, we found very limited evidence of trait continuity, with generally very weak and few statistically significant observed associations of in…

Exposure to Tobacco Smoke and Temperament among U.S. Children 0-5 Years Old.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) and temperament among children 0-5 years old overall and within age groups: 0-2 and 3-5 years. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2017-2018 NSCH (N = 14,345). TSE status was defined as whether children lived with a smoker who: does not smoke inside the home (no home TSE) or smokes inside the home (home TSE). We conducted logistic regression analyses while controlling for covariates. RESULTS: Overall, 12.5% of children lived with a smoker with no home TSE and 1.1% had home TSE. Children with home TSE were a…

Placental Gene Expression and Offspring Temperament Trajectories: Predicting Negative Affect in Early Childhood.

Exposure to prenatal stress increases offspring risk for long-term neurobehavioral impairments and psychopathology, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Epigenetic regulation of glucocorticoid pathway genes may be a potential underlying mechanism by which maternal conditions 'program' the fetal brain for downstream vulnerabilities. The present study aims to investigate whether mRNA expression of glucocorticoid pathway genes in the placenta predict offspring negative affect during early childhood (between 6 and 24 months). Participants include 318 mother-child dyads particip

Modeling development of frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) asymmetry: Sex differences and links with temperament.

Asymmetric patterns of frontal brain electrical activity reflect approach and avoidance tendencies, with stability of relative right activation associated with withdrawal emotions/motivation and left hemisphere activation linked with approach and positive affect. However, considerable shifts in approach/avoidance-related lateralization have been reported for children not targeted because of extreme temperament. In this study, dynamic effects of frontal electroencephalogram (EEG) power within and across hemispheres were examined throughout early childhood. Specifically, EEG indicators at 5, 10,…

Temperament and character personality profile and illness-related stress in central serous chorioretinopathy.

Psychological stress is a risk factor as well as a consequence of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC). Impulsiveness, overachievement, emotional instability, and hard-driving competitiveness have been discussed as personality features in CSC patients. We investigated 57 consecutive CSC patients and 57 age- and gender-matched controls by means of the Symptom Checklist 90-R and the Temperament and Character Inventory. Somatic risk factors, illness characteristics, subjective assessment of severity of illness, and illness-related stress in different areas of life (work, private life) were eval…

Pregnancy-specific anxiety, ART conception and infant temperament at 4 months post-partum.

STUDY QUESTION: Is anxiety focused on the pregnancy outcome, known to be particularly salient in women conceiving through assisted reproductive technology (ART), related to difficult infant temperament? SUMMARY ANSWER: While trait anxiety predicts infant temperament, pregnancy-focused anxiety is not associated with more difficult infant temperament. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: A large body of research has provided convincing evidence that fetal exposure to maternal anxiety and stress in pregnancy has adverse consequences for child neurodevelopmental, behavioural and cognitive development, and tha…

Child's Temperament as Risk Factor for Preoperative Anxiety-A Secondary Analysis of the ALPAKA Trial.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is common in young children and may impair cooperation during anesthesia induction. Some temperament traits have been associated with higher anxiety levels in the preoperative phase. While midazolam is widely used for anxiolysis, individual responses vary and may be influenced by underlying psychological characteristics such as temperament. AIMS: This study aimed to examine the association between specific temperament traits and preoperative anxiety in young children and to determine whether these associations persist after midazolam administration. METHODS: …

The association between temperament and polygenic score for psychopathology from infancy to middle childhood.

BACKGROUND: Certain temperament characteristics, such as low effortful control and high negative affectivity, are linked to an elevated likelihood for later psychopathology. Although genetic vulnerability has been associated with a number of psychiatric conditions, little work has examined the genetic architecture underlying temperament or the genetic overlap between early temperament profiles and later mental health outcomes. The present study examined associations of polygenic scores for anxiety (PGS-Anxiety) and ADHD (PGS-ADHD) with temperament characteristics in a longitudinal sample of ch…
