Efficacy of theaflavin-based dental varnishes against erosive demineralizatıon and matrix metalloproteinase expression.

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of experimental varnishes containing theaflavin (TF-2a/2b) against erosive demineralization and matrix metalloproteinase enzymes (MMPs) and investigate the bonding properties of TFs to MMPs. Enamel and dentin samples, measuring 3 × 5 × 2 mm, were extracted and immersed in citric acid solution for 60 s to induce artificial erosive lesions. The samples were then randomly allocated into six experimental groups and one control (fluoride) group (n = 6). Experimental groups were treated with different varnish formulations of resin-, pol

Prevalence of dental erosions in GERD: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Dental erosions are determined by a mechanism involving increased oral acidity. Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) represents the pathological reflux of gastric content into the oral cavity, affecting the hard dental tissues integrity, with a major risk of advanced tooth wear. AIM: This study aims to investigate the prevalence of dental erosions in GERD patients, in order to obtain a basis for therapeutic strategies and specific prophylactic measures. METHODS: We incorporated a mandatory dental consultation in the therapeutic protocol of GERD patients. The study was carried

Pulp-dentin biology in restorative dentistry. Part 5: Clinical management and tissue changes associated with wear and trauma.

Tooth wear occurs during normal mastication. Pathologic wear, including abrasion and erosion, may also take place. Formation of reactionary and reparative dentin and obturation of dentinal tubules are biologic responses that compensate for the loss of tissue. Physical trauma to teeth will affect the blood supply to the pulp. Extensive physical trauma may result in the formation of mineralized, often bonelike tissue in the pulp chamber. Minor trauma, such as that associated with orthodontic tooth movement, may exert transient effects on the pulp or it may result in permanent structural changes.

Adjacent Implant Influence on Tooth Restoration in a Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) Patient Using Monoblock Post-Fused Crown: A Case Report.

This case report explores how the presence of an adjacent implant influenced the restoration of a tooth with pulpitis in a gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) patient. A patient with GERD requires a tooth-colored crown not only for aesthetics but also to address potential galvanic concerns arising from an adjacent implant. GERD, a condition causing non-cavity erosion, weakens tooth structure over time, presenting significant challenges in treatment. It resulted in bite relapse and insufficient occlusal clarity over time. A comprehensive treatment approach was needed to restore both functio

Intrusion of overerupted upper first molar using two orthodontic miniscrews. A case report.

Loss of the mandibular first molar often leads to the overeruption of the opposing maxillary first molar, resulting in occlusal interference, loss of periodontal bony support, and inadequate room to restore the mandibular edentulous space. Without orthodontic molar intrusion or segmental surgical impaction, restoring the posterior occlusion often entails the need for significant reduction of maxillary molar crown height, with the potential need for costly iatrogenic root canal therapy and restoration. The literature has cited successful maxillary molar intrusion with minor prosthodontic reduct

Full-mouth rehabilitation of a patient with bulimia nervosa. A case report.

Anorexia and bulimia nervosa are eating disorders seen mainly in adolescents or young patients. The dentist should be in the position to recognize early signs of the disorder and alert the patient (and the patient's parents, if necessary) of the possible physical, psychologi cal, and dental consequences. Such dental treatment may help motivate the patient to confront the problem. In this paper the full-mouth rehabilitation, using a combination of galvano- and metal-ceramic restorations, of a young patient suffering from bulimia nervosa is described.

[Morphogenesis and structure of teleost teeth (Salmo fario L.)].

Tooth formation has been studied in the fry and adult trout (Salmo fario L.) in order to describe their structure and investigate the links between histogenetic and architectural features. Odontoblasts show typical polarized kinetics during their activity; they shrink back from the tooth wall they have elaborated, without leaving any cytoplasmic process (Tomes' fibres); so the dentine in a characteristic way lacks any cellular or canalicular inclusion, at any stage of its development. The tooth as a whole grows from an apical to basal direction; its organic matrix is formed of coarse fibres fr

Are sugar-free confections really beneficial for dental health?

BACKGROUND: Various sugar substitutes have been introduced and are widely used in confections and beverages to avoid tooth decay from sugar and other fermentable carbohydrates. One group of sugar substitutes are sugar alcohols or polyols. They have been specifically used in foods for diabetic patients because polyols are not readily absorbed in the intestine and blood stream, preventing post-prandial elevation of glucose level. Additionally they may lower caloric intake. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Cochrane Controlled Trials Registry, Cochrane Oral Health Review, Centre for Reviews and Disse

Tooth development and replacement in the Atlantic Cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus, with comparisons to other Scombroidei.

Atlantic Cutlassfish, Trichiurus lepturus, have large, barbed, premaxillary and dentary fangs, and sharp dagger-shaped teeth in their oral jaws. Functional teeth firmly ankylose to the dentigerous bones. We used dry skeletons, histology, SEM, and micro-CT scanning to study 92 specimens of T. lepturus from the western North Atlantic to describe its dentition and tooth replacement. We identified three modes of intraosseous tooth replacement in T. lepturus depending on the location of the tooth in the jaw. Mode 1 relates to replacement of premaxillary fangs, in which new tooth germs enter the lin
