This article reviews the pharmacological treatment of severely hypoxaemic critically ill patients, notably those with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), acute lung injury or the sepsis syndrome. Congestive heart failure is a major cause of morbidity and mortality as the population ages. This article reviews the progress made in treating the two major causes of heart failure--mechanical and myocardial. New approaches to relieving mitral stenosis and guidelines for the treatment of congestive heart failure are reviewed. Appropriate assessment and management leads to major improvement in prognosis.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the use of the Hemopump to treat low cardiac output syndrome after cardiopulmonary bypass.
METHODS: We used the Hemopump temporary cardiac assist system in 29 patients with severe left ventricular dysfunction after open heart operations from September 1991 to November 1994.

The use of high-voltage electric shock therapy for the treatment of snake venom poisoning has recently gained popularity in the United States. We present a case that documents the dangerous, ineffective application of electric shock to the face of a patient envenomated by a Great Basin rattlesnake (Crotalus viridis lutosus). Measles encephalopathy during immunosuppression (MEI) occurs in patients with immunologic defects and is fatal. The course of the disease in 2 children, 4 and 5 years old, in the remission phase of acute lymphatic leukemia is presented. Diagnosis was possible, post-mortem, by recognition of measles virus antigen in brain tissue and in one patient by demonstration of intrathecal production of measles antibodies. Treatment with interferon did not improve the condition. Preventive measures primarily by early immunization of the childhood population against measles is stressed.

8 patients suffering from acute renal failure (shock kidney) with anuria extending over 3 to 5 days, were treated with L-thyroxine for 5 to 9 days (5-6 mug per kg body weight per day orally).
