Normally sighted observers typically benefit from binocular viewing when monocular sensitivities are equivalent. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) not only destroys the foveal vision, however, but it also affects the 2 eyes unequally, providing grounds for impairment of binocular function. In Calliphora erythrocephala the visual fixation behaviour in one-eyed flies and partial blinded flies has been investigated. One-eyed flies show approximately the same stripe and edge fixation response as intact flies. A new method of color division of the visual fields based on polarized light interference is described. A new method for diploptic therapy of strabismus is developed, based on the above principle and possessing numerous advantages. The method was used in 38 patients with binocular disorders of various severity; binocular function improved in 18. The method is particularly effective in the patients with correct position of the eyes with bifoveal fusion on the synaptophore and parallel color test vision and in the patients with binocular vision and amblyobinopia.

UNLABELLED: 163 patients suffering from different serious troubles were treated with binocular full correction (BFC) i.e. examination by Polatest and prismatic correction. Before, they all had seen other ophthalmologists. The former diagnose and therapy are listed and compared with those of the author.

Seventeen cases of unilateral aphakia secondary to acquired cataracts and dislocated lenses were presented. Final visual acuity was 20/70 or better in 12 of our 17 patients. Binocular single vision has been maintained in four cases. Ten patients had a posttherapy tropia. Early surgery and treatment particularly in the young child is stressed in order to maintain normal binocular single vision. Where once traumatized eyes were felt to be "sick" eyes and better left alone, current surgical and therapeutic methods make restoration of vision and binocularity a reasonable goal.
