Age-related differences in the acoustic characteristics of male leopard seals, Hydrurga leptonyx.

During the breeding season, the underwater vocalizations and calling rates of adult male leopard seals are highly stereotyped. In contrast, sub-adult males have more variable acoustic behavior. Although adult males produce only five stereotyped broadcast calls as part of their long-range underwater breeding displays the sub-adults have a greater repertoire including the adult-like broadcast calls, as well as variants of these. Whether this extended repertoire has a social function is unknown due to the paucity of behavioral data for this species. The broadcast calls of the sub-adults are less

A broad filter between call frequency and peripheral auditory sensitivity in northern grasshopper mice (Onychomys leucogaster).

Acoustic communication is a fundamental component of mate and competitor recognition in a variety of taxa and requires animals to detect and differentiate among acoustic stimuli (Bradbury and Vehrencamp in Principles of animal communication, 2nd edn., Sinauer Associates, Sunderland, 2011). The matched filter hypothesis predicts a correspondence between peripheral auditory tuning of receivers and properties of species-specific acoustic signals, but few studies have assessed this relationship in rodents. We recorded vocalizations and measured auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) in northern grass

Evolutionary novelties underlie sound production in baleen whales.

Baleen whales (mysticetes) use vocalizations to mediate their complex social and reproductive behaviours in vast, opaque marine environments1. Adapting to an obligate aquatic lifestyle demanded fundamental physiological changes to efficiently produce sound, including laryngeal specializations2-4. Whereas toothed whales (odontocetes) evolved a nasal vocal organ5, mysticetes have been thought to use the larynx for sound production1,6-8. However, there has been no direct demonstration that the mysticete larynx can phonate, or if it does, how it produces the great diversity of mysticete sounds9. H

Injection laryngoplasty with hyaluronic acid for glottal insufficiency in unilateral vocal fold paralysis: a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Glottal insufficiency, mostly caused by unilateral vocal fold paralysis (UVFP) or vocal fold atrophy can be treated by injection laryngoplasty (IL). Materials such as hyaluronic acid (HA) gels are now widely available and used to improve voice quality. Various durability and effects of HA injection laryngoplasties have been reported. The aim of this study is to provide a systematic review of the literature for the use of HA in injection laryngoplasties. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and Cochrane Libraries. Three reviewers assessed original researc

The Regenerative Effects of c-Met Agonistic Antibodies in Vocal Fold Atrophy.

BACKGROUND: Atrophy of the vocal folds and the accompanying glottic insufficiency affect the quality of life. Although growth factors have been used to treat muscle atrophy, their effectiveness is limited by their short half-life. METHODS: In total, 15 rabbits and 24 rats were used for the study. The right recurrent laryngeal nerves of all animals were transected. One month following nerve transection, PBS (PBS group), rHGF (HGF group), or a c-Met agonistic antibody (c-Met group) was injected into the paralyzed vocal folds. The larynges of the rabbits were harvested from each group for histol

Population Dynamics in Songbird RA and HVC During Learned Motor-Vocal Behavior.

Complex, learned motor behaviors involve the coordination of large-scale neural activity across multiple brain regions, but our understanding of population-level neural dynamics within different regions tied to the same behavior remains limited. Here, we investigate the neural population dynamics underlying learned vocal production in awake, singing songbirds. Using Neuropixels probes, we record simultaneous extracellular activity from populations of neurons in two regions of the vocal-motor pathway in adult male zebra finches. In line with observations made in non-human primates during limb-b

The high fundamental frequency in horse whinnies is generated by an aerodynamic whistle.

Understanding why the frequencies of some species' vocalizations are far above or below those predicted by body size is key for explaining the remarkable diversity of mammalian vocal behavior. Horses, among the largest terrestrial mammals, provide a clear example of such deviation: their whinnies contain a very high fundamental frequency (>1,000 Hz) in addition to a second, lower one (∼200 Hz). While the lower fundamental frequency of whinnies is readily attributed to vocal fold (laryngeal) vibrations, the biomechanical processes underlying the production of the higher one remain unknown. Abnormalities in auditory efferent activities in children with selective mutism.

Two efferent feedback pathways to the auditory periphery may play a role in monitoring self-vocalization: the middle-ear acoustic reflex (MEAR) and the medial olivocochlear bundle (MOCB) reflex. Since most studies regarding the role of auditory efferent activity during self-vocalization were conducted in animals, human data are scarce. The working premise of the current study was that selective mutism (SM), a rare psychiatric disorder characterized by consistent failure to speak in specific social situations despite the ability to speak normally in other situations, may serve as a human model

Interactions of subglottal pressure and neuromuscular activation on fundamental frequency and intensity.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Fundamental frequency (F0) and intensity sound pressure level (SPL) of voice are controlled by intrinsic laryngeal muscle (ILM) activation and subglottal pressure (Psub). Their interactions were investigated. METHODS: In an in vivo canine model, the thyroarytenoid (TA), lateral cricoarytenoid/interarytenoid (LCA/IA), and cricothyroid (CT) muscles were independently activated from threshold to maximal contraction by neuromuscular stimulation in various combinations, whereas airflow was increased to phonation onset pressure and beyond. The resultant acoustic output was an

Subacute acrolein exposure to rat larynx in vivo.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Inhaled pollutants can contact vocal fold tissue and induce detrimental voice changes. Acrolein is a pollutant in cigarette smoke and can also be inhaled during the combustion of fossil fuels, animal fats, and plastics in the environment. However, the vocal fold pathological changes induced by acrolein and the underlying inflammatory pathways are not well understood. These biologic data are needed to understand why voice problems may result from pollutant exposure. STUDY DESIGN: In vivo prospective design with experimental and control groups. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley ma

Sound analysis to model weight of broiler chickens.

The pattern of body weight gain during the commercial growing of broiler chickens is important to understand growth and feed conversion ratio of each flock. The application of sound analysis techniques has been widely studied to measure and analyze the amplitude and frequency of animal sounds. Previous studies have shown a significant correlation (P ≤ 0.001) between the frequency of vocalization and the age and weight of broilers. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify and validate a model that describes the growth rate of broiler chickens based on the peak frequency of their vocaliza

Laryngeal response to passively induced hypocapnia during NREM sleep in normal adult humans.

Passively induced hypocapnia in animals activates vocal cord adductor muscles and decreases the glottic aperture. The purpose of this study was to determine if passively induced hypocapnia has similar effects in normal adult humans in stage 3/4 non-rapid-eye-movement (NREM) sleep. Hypocapnia was induced by hyperventilating the subjects with a positive-pressure ventilator via a nose mask. At hypocapnic levels below the CO2 apneic threshold, abrupt cessation of mechanical ventilation was followed by an apnea. In protocol 1, intramuscular electromyographic recordings of intrinsic laryngeal muscle

Vocal fold medialization by surgical augmentation versus arytenoid adduction in the in vivo canine model.

There are a variety of methods for treating unilateral vocal cord paralysis, but to date there have been few studies that compare these phonosurgical techniques by using objective measures of voice improvement. Vocal efficiency is an objective voice measure that is defined as the ratio of the acoustic power produced by the larynx to the subglottic air power. Vocal efficiency has been found to decrease with glottic disorders such as vocal cord paralysis and carcinoma. This study compared the effects of vocal fold medialization by surgical augmentation to those of arytenoid adduction on the voca

Reorganization of laryngeal motoneurons after crush injury in the recurrent laryngeal nerve of the rat.

Motoneurons innervating laryngeal muscles are located in the nucleus ambiguus (Amb), but there is no general agreement on the somatotopic representation and even less is known on how an injury in the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) affects this pattern. This study analyzes the normal somatotopy of those motoneurons and describes its changes over time after a crush injury to the RLN. In the control group (control group 1, n = 9 rats), the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) and thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles were injected with cholera toxin-B. In the experimental groups the left RLN of each animal was

Injection of autologous muscle stem cells (myoblasts) for the treatment of vocal fold paralysis: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Autologous muscle stem cell (myoblast) therapy may be an ideal treatment for vocal fold paralysis because of its technical ease (administered by injection), its potential to restore muscular defects and dynamic function, and its autologous origin. The goal of this project was to determine whether autologous myoblast injection into the thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle after recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury could attenuate TA muscle atrophy and enhance spontaneous reinnervation. STUDY DESIGN: This was an animal experiment. METHODS: Unilateral RLN transection and sternocleidomastoid

Comparative Study of the Anxiolytic Activity of Songorine in Elevated Plus Maze Test and by Recording Ultrasonic Vocalizations.

It was found that the diterpene alkaloid songorine administered per os to mice at a dose of 25 μg/kg provides a pronounced anxiolytic effect during elevated plus maze testing comparable to the effect of the benzodiazepine anxiolytic phenazepam. Recording of ultrasonic vocalizations of animals revealed an increase in the number of short high-frequency (50 kHz) signals under the action of songorine and the reference drug, which confirms their anti-anxiety properties.

The evolutionary history of genes involved in spoken and written language: beyond FOXP2.

Humans possess a communication system based on spoken and written language. Other animals can learn vocalization by imitation, but this is not equivalent to human language. Many genes were described to be implicated in language impairment (LI) and developmental dyslexia (DD), but their evolutionary history has not been thoroughly analyzed. Herein we analyzed the evolution of ten genes involved in DD and LI. Results show that the evolutionary history of LI genes for mammals and aves was comparable in vocal-learner species and non-learners. For the human lineage, several sites showing evidence o

Effects of recurrent laryngeal nerve transection and vagotomy on respiratory contraction of the cricothyroid muscle.

The cricothyroid muscle (CT) appears to be an accessory muscle of respiration. Phasic inspiratory contraction is stimulated by increasing respiratory demand. Reflex activation of the CT may be responsible for the paramedian position of the vocal folds, and hence airway obstruction, in patients with bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) paralysis. Previous research has demonstrated the influence of superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) afferents on CT activity. The present study addresses the effects of vagal and RLN afferents. Electromyographic activity of the CT and right posterior cricoarytenoi

Treatment of spastic dysphonia without nerve section.

Spastic dysphonia is a disorder characterized by strained, constricted phonation with excessively adducted vocal cords. Despite initial success with recurrent laryngeal nerve section, the search for other treatment continues. Our clinical study involved inserting a needle electrode percutaneously into the region of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in five patients with spastic dysphonia. Electrical stimulation resulted in dramatic improvement in three patients and minimal improvement in two. Our experimental study was designed to create an animal model for an implantable nerve stimulator to be us
