PURPOSE: To assess the existence of any correlation between the quantity of silicone oil emulsified in the anterior chamber and the incidence of high intraocular pressure in vitrectomized eyes.
METHODS: Forty-nine eyes of 49 patients underwent vitrectomy with silicone oil injection as an adjuvant procedure. AIMS: The primary objective was to determine which surgical technique gave the best long term visual outcome for infants and young children with bilateral symmetrical cataract in south India. Secondary objectives were to assess complications and the need for further surgical intervention.

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of prophylactic medical intervention in reducing the incidence of cystoid macular edema (CME) and the effectiveness of medical treatment for chronic CME after cataract surgery.
DESIGN: The study design was a systematic review and meta-analysis of published reports of randomized clinical trials (RCTs).
PARTICIPANTS: Sixteen RCTs involving 2898 eyes examining the effectiveness of medical prophylaxis of CME and 4 RCTs involving 187 eyes testing the effectiveness of medical treatment of chronic CME were used in the study.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the results of a large series of secondary implantations using scleral-fixated posterior chamber intraocular lenses (IOLs).
SETTING: Bellevue Eye Hospital, Kiel, Germany.
METHODS: This retrospective review comprised 624 consecutive patients who had secondary implantation of a posterior chamber IOL with scleral fixation between 1988 and 1995. All patients had been aphakic for at least 1 year. An ab interno or ab externo suture technique through the ciliary sulcus was used. Visual outcome and complications 1 year after surgery were determined.

PURPOSE: We examined the efficacy of intraocular lens implantation (IOL) in children younger than 4 years of age for unilateral aphakic visual rehabilitation.
METHODS: Twenty-one patients underwent unilateral cataract extraction, IOL placement, posterior capsulotomy, and anterior vitrectomy between 1990 and 1994. Postoperative vision, refractive change, and complications were monitored prospectively. Two cataract subgroups were analyzed: 12 patients with infantile (congenital and developmental) cataracts, and nine patients with posttraumatic cataracts.

We reviewed 604 eyes in 521 patients who had intracapsular cataract extraction. The follow-up period averaged 39 months. The incidence of rhegmatogenous aphakic retinal detachment (ARD) was 1.3% in the whole group. Two similar patient populations with previously unoperated, atraumatic, rhegmatogenous retinal separations were surgically treated using the same technique with encircling elements in one series (290 eyes) and without encircling elements in the other (463 eyes). Nine percent of the encircled group remained detached compared with 7.6% in the other group. The reason for ultimate surgical failure in both groups was proliferative vitreoretinopathy. Encirclement offered no advantage with respect to surgical success.
