Predicting mental health risk in adolescents using interpretable machine learning: Evidence from SHAP analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Adolescent mental health is a critical public health concern; however, the combined contribution of emotional, demographic, and behavioral factors to poor mental health remains incompletely understood. This study applied an interpretable machine learning framework to identify key predictors of elevated mental health risk among adolescents and characterize their relative and non-linear contributions. METHODS: Data were drawn from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), comprising 16,946 U.S. high school students. Elevated mental health risk was defined using the YRBS

TL-RL-FusionNet: Reinforcement Learning-Guided Residual MLP with Fused CNN Embeddings for Efficient and Adaptive Ransomware Detection.

Ransomware detection remains challenging because modern variants exhibit diverse, elusive, and partly benign behaviors and can propagate rapidly across interconnected enterprises and sensor-enabled cyber-physical systems, causing cascading operational failures. These characteristics undermine signature-based and static-detection methods. Although machine learning has improved detection, many approaches still rely on fixed objectives that weight samples uniformly, limiting their adaptation to heterogeneity and overlaps between ransomware and benign activities. To address this challenge, we intr

Integrated analysis of cell-in-cell related genes and immune microenvironment in heart failure.

BACKGROUND: Heart failure (HF) is a major global public health challenge, and its pathogenesis involves the regulation of a complex immune microenvironment (IME). Cell-in-cell (CIC), as a non-classical form of cell-cell interaction, has been extensively studied in fields like oncology, but its role in HF remains unclear. This study aimed to systematically analyze the expression patterns and functions of CIC-related genes (CRGs) within the HF immune microenvironment. METHODS: Based on transcriptomic data from public databases, CIC-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between HF and he

APOE ε4 allele drives female-specific Alzheimer's disease progression via vascular dysfunction and tau spreading.

BACKGROUND: Apolipoprotein E (APOE) epsilon4 (ε4) is a major genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), with women exhibiting heightened vulnerability to APOE ε4-associated cognitive impairment. Despite recognition of this sexual dimorphism, the underlying biological mechanisms remain incompletely understood. METHODS: We performed weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) on RNA-seq data from the Mayo Clinic cohort (n = 277 temporal cortex samples) to identify sex- and APOE ε4-linked co-expression modules. 315 hub genes were identified within the most relevant gen

Machine-Based Learning Hierarchical Cluster Analysis: Sex-Based Differences in Prognosis Following Resection of Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) may have a heterogeneous presentation, as well as different long-term outcomes following surgical resection. We sought to use machine learning to cluster patients into different prognostic groups based on preoperative characteristics. METHODS: Patients who underwent curative-intent liver resection for HCC between 2000 and 2020 were identified from a large international multi-institutional database. A hierarchical cluster analysis was performed based on preoperative factors to characterize patterns of presentation and define disease-free

Decomposing MRI phenotypic heterogeneity in epilepsy: a step towards personalized classification.

In drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy, precise predictions of drug response, surgical outcome and cognitive dysfunction at an individual level remain challenging. A possible explanation may lie in the dominant 'one-size-fits-all' group-level analytical approaches that does not allow parsing interindividual variations along the disease spectrum. Conversely, analysing inter-patient heterogeneity is increasingly recognized as a step towards person-centred care. Here, we used unsupervised machine learning to estimate latent relations (or disease factors) from 3 T multimodal MRI features [cortic

A Systematic Quality Scoring Analysis to Assess Automated Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Segmentation Algorithms.

BACKGROUND: The quantitative measures used to assess the performance of automated methods often do not reflect the clinical acceptability of contouring. A quality-based assessment of automated cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) segmentation more relevant to clinical practice is therefore needed. OBJECTIVE: We propose a new method for assessing the quality of machine learning (ML) outputs. We evaluate the clinical utility of the proposed method as it is employed to systematically analyse the quality of an automated contouring algorithm. METHODS: A dataset of short-axis (SAX) cine CMR images fro

Artificial intelligence in the diagnosis and management of colorectal cancer liver metastases.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignancy worldwide, with approximately 50% of patients developing colorectal cancer liver metastasis (CRLM) during the follow-up period. Management of CRLM is best achieved via a multidisciplinary approach and the diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making process is complex. In order to optimize patients' survival and quality of life, there are several unsolved challenges which must be overcome. These primarily include a timely diagnosis and the identification of reliable prognostic factors. Furthermore, to allow optimal treatment options, a

Evaluation of historical beryllium abundance in soils, airborne particulates and facilities at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Beryllium has been historically machined, handled and stored in facilities at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) since the 1950s. Additionally, outdoor testing of beryllium-containing components has been performed at LLNL's Site 300 facility. Beryllium levels in local soils and atmospheric particulates have been measured over three decades and are comparable to those found elsewhere in the natural environment. While localized areas of beryllium contamination have been identified, laboratory operations do not appear to have increased the concentration of beryllium in local air or wat

The biomechanical, morphologic, and histochemical properties of the costal cartilages in children with pectus excavatum.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The cause of the pectus excavatum (PE) remains unclear, although some results of research have indicated that the disturbance of the sternum or costal cartilage might be responsible for this deformity. But no decisive evidence has been gained. The authors have analyzed the biomechanical, morphologic, and histochemical properties of the cartilage in PE and intend to support the belief that the disturbance of the cartilage might contribute to the development of PE. METHODS: Thirty-eight specimens of the sixth cartilage were obtained at operation for the PE group (aged from 3

Machine-Learning Versus Traditional Scores for Predicting Outcomes After Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BackgroundCoronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Traditional risk scores, such as the Society of Thoracic Surgery (STS) and EuroSCORE II, have limitations in predicting outcomes, particularly in high-risk patients. Machine learning (ML) models may address these issues by detecting nuanced data patterns not captured by conventional methods. This systematic review and meta-analysis compared the efficacy of ML models with traditional risk scores in predicting outcomes after CABG.MethodsA comprehensive literature search of records up to Augus

An archetypal analysis of lumbopelvic profiles could help predict adverse spinopelvic mobility after total hip arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: The hip‒spine relationship (HSR) plays a crucial role in the outcomes of total hip arthroplasty (THA) as it influences spinopelvic mobility and the risk of prosthetic impingement. Traditional preoperative assessments, which rely on static spinopelvic parameters, often fail to predict postoperative changes. To overcome this limitation, we developed an unsupervised machine learning model on the basis of an archetype analysis that revealed seven distinct lumbopelvic profiles, independent of modifiable postoperative factors. The aim of this study was to apply the trained model to a new

Identification and Classification of Images in e-Cigarette-Related Content on TikTok: Unsupervised Machine Learning Image Clustering Approach.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies identified e-cigarette content on popular video and image-based social media platforms such as TikTok. While machine learning approaches have been increasingly used with text-based social media data, image-based analysis such as image-clustering has been rarely used on TikTok. Image clustering can identify underlying patterns and structures across large sets of images, enabling more streamlined distillation and analysis of visual data on TikTok. This study used image-clustering approaches to examine e-cigarette-related images on TikTok. METHODS: We searched for 13

Bifidobacterium reduction is associated with high blood pressure in children with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Children with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) have an elevated risk of abnormal blood pressure (BP) measurements and patterns. Both hypertension and T1DM are well-known risk factors for cardiovascular disease and kidney failure. The human microbiome has been linked to both diabetes and hypertension, but the relationship between the gut microbiome and BP in children with T1DM is not well-understood. In this cross-sectional study, we examined the relationship between resting office BP and gut microbiota composition, diversity, and richness in children with T1DM and healthy controls. We recruited

Video-based machine learning models for predicting deep brain stimulation outcomes in Parkinson's disease patients.

Current levodopa challenge test (LCT) for deep brain stimulation (DBS) candidate screening in Parkinson's disease (PD) relies on subjective clinical scales, limiting its predictive capacity for postoperative motor outcomes. We developed video-based machine learning models using quantified kinematic metrics during preoperative LCT in seventy PD patients who underwent DBS surgery. Objective multi-domain motor features were extracted via validated motor assessment software. Binary classification defined patients' outcomes as DBS+ (≥30% improvement in MDS-UPDRS Part III) or DBS- (<30%). Ternary cl
