Can ultrasound measures of intrinsic foot muscles and plantar soft tissues predict future diabetes-related foot disease? A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with hyperglycaemia and advanced glycosylation end-products. In the foot, the consequences of chronic or uncontrolled diabetes are micro and macrovascular disease, neuropathy, reduced joint mobility and structural and soft tissue changes that increase the risk of ulcer development and amputation. Diabetes foot assessment currently includes a comprehensive history, neurological and vascular assessments and examination focussed on dermatological and musculoskeletal abnormalities. Whilst these assessments are helpful for predicting ulceration ris…

Recent research on Gulf War illness and other health problems in veterans of the 1991 Gulf War: Effects of toxicant exposures during deployment.

Veterans of Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield - the 1991 Gulf War (GW) - are a unique population who returned from theater with multiple health complaints and disorders. Studies in the U.S. and elsewhere have consistently concluded that approximately 25-32% of this population suffers from a disorder characterized by symptoms that vary somewhat among individuals and include fatigue, headaches, cognitive dysfunction, musculoskeletal pain, and respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatologic complaints. Gulf War illness (GWI) is the term used to describe this disorder. In addition, brain cancer

Imaging findings of adiposis dolorosa vs. massive localized lymphedema.

PURPOSE: Adiposis dolorosa (Dercum's disease) is a condition of benign, painful subcutaneous lipomatous lesions associated with weakness, endocrine and lipid abnormalities, and mental disturbances. There is little information documenting the cross-sectional imaging findings that differentiate it from lipomatous and neoplastic soft tissue masses, or massive localized lymphedema. The purpose of this study was to provide a radiological case series of adiposis dolorosa. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective review of the picture archiving and communications system was performed. Two musculoskeletal ra

Early motor deficits in mouse disease models are reliably uncovered using an automated home-cage wheel-running system: a cross-laboratory validation.

Deficits in motor function are debilitating features in disorders affecting neurological, neuromuscular and musculoskeletal systems. Although these disorders can vary greatly with respect to age of onset, symptomatic presentation, rate of progression and severity, the study of these disease models in mice is confined to the use of a small number of tests, most commonly the rotarod test. To expand the repertoire of meaningful motor function tests in mice, we tested, optimised and validated an automated home-cage-based running-wheel system, incorporating a conventional wheel with evenly spaced r

Altered Joint Forces Found in Symptomatic Dysplastic Hips in Women During Sport-Specific Activities.

BACKGROUND: Many patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) are young and highly active but often become limited by activity-induced pain. Characterizing how the abnormal bony geometry of DDH affects hip joint loading and multiplanar kinematics during sport-specific motions relevant to active patients may provide insight into injury mechanisms and inform optimal treatment options. PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The purpose of this study was to determine how hip joint loading and kinematics are altered in DDH during 2 common sport activities: running and multidirectional hop-cutting. It was h

Morbidity and mortality in children with obstructive sleep apnoea: a controlled national study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the diagnostic patterns of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) in children. A study was undertaken to evaluate morbidity and mortality in childhood OSA. METHODS: 2998 patients aged 0-19 years with a diagnosis of OSA were identified from the Danish National Patient Registry. For each patient we randomly selected four citizens matched for age, sex and socioeconomic status, thus providing 11 974 controls. RESULTS: Patients with OSA had greater morbidity at least 3 years before their diagnosis. The most common contacts with the health system arose from infections (OR

Self-supervised isotropic reconstruction for abnormality detection in anisotropic MRI.

Accelerating musculoskeletal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) while preserving diagnostic detail remains challenging because acquiring fully‑isotropic ground‑truth volumes is clinically costly. In routine practice, anisotropic scans with reduced through-plane resolution degrade multiplanar visualization and slice-by-slice review in reformatted planes, obscure subtle abnormalities spanning only a few slices, and limit automated three-dimensional (3D) analyses that assume comparable spatial resolution across axes. We present a two‑stage, fully self‑supervised pipeline that learns directly from a

Multisystemic manifestations in a cohort of 75 classical Ehlers-Danlos syndrome patients: natural history and nosological perspectives.

BACKGROUND: The Ehlers-Danlos syndromes (EDS) are rare connective tissue disorders consisting of 13 subtypes with overlapping features including joint hypermobility, skin and generalized connective tissue fragility. Classical EDS (cEDS) is principally caused by heterozygous COL5A1 or COL5A2 variants and rarely by the COL1A1 p.(Arg312Cys) substitution. Current major criteria are (1) skin hyperextensibility plus atrophic scars and (2) generalized joint hypermobility (gJHM). Minor criteria include additional mucocutaneous signs, epicanthal folds, gJHM complications, and an affected first-degree r

Indications for bone marrow examinations in rheumatology.

Hematologic involvement or hematologic malignancies are frequently encountered during the course of rheumatic diseases. Bone marrow (BM) aspiration and/or biopsy examinations may have a diagnostic role in explaining hematologic findings detected in rheumatology clinical practice. Our aim was to describe the indications for BM examinations and to share our BM aspiration/biopsy results. We analyzed 140 BM aspiration/biopsy results of patients conducted at the Department of Rheumatology from 2010 to 2018. Demographics, complete blood count (CBC), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive p

Sagittal Plane Kinematic Deviations and Spatio-Temporal Gait Characteristics in Children with Idiopathic Toe Walking: A Comparative Analysis Using Statistical Parametric Mapping.

Background/Objectives: Idiopathic Toe Walking (ITW) is a pediatric gait disorder characterized by persistent toe-to-heel ambulation in the absence of neurological, orthopedic, or developmental abnormalities. While spatio-temporal parameters often remain within normal ranges, subtle but clinically significant kinematic deviations may underlie compensatory mechanisms that sustain gait functionality. This study aims to evaluate spatio-temporal and sagittal plane kinematic differences between children with ITW and typically developing peers using Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM). Methods: A co

Quantitative MRI Dixon signal drop and fat fraction for differentiating bone marrow lesions: a two-center prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Bone marrow (BM) lesion differentiation remains challenging, and quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may enhance accuracy over conventional methods. We evaluated the diagnostic value and inter-reader reliability of Dixon-based signal drop (%drop) and fat fraction percentage (%fat) as adjuncts to existing protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective two-center study, 172 patients with BM signal abnormalities underwent standardized 1.5-T MRI protocols, including Dixon sequences. Two musculoskeletal radiologists independently evaluated images and performed quantita

Modafinil Ameliorated Fibromyalgia Syndrome in Rats by Modulating Mast Cells and Microglia Activation Through Dopamine/Substance P/MRGPRX/Histamine and PI3K/p-Akt/NF-κB Signaling Pathways.

Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is characterized by prolonged, widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by various physical and psychological disturbances. Modafinil, a wake-promoting drug, manages pain symptoms in several diseases by inhibiting dopamine reuptake and exhibiting anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, including the impairment of cytokine production, microglia, and mast cell activation. Central inflammation may involve microglial activation, which is correlated with mast cell activation. Restoring dopamine levels and modulating the communication between mast cells and mic

Association Between Chronic Pain and Jumping-to-Conclusions Behaviour.

OBJECTIVES: A tendency to jumping to conclusions (JTCs) was described in schizophrenia, in functional movement disorders and recently in a mixed group of chronic pain patients and has been discussed to indicate prefrontal dysfunction. This study investigated the tendency to premature decisions (JTC) in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), a severe disorder affecting predominantly the distal limb, compared to healthy individuals and those with chronic limb pain from other causes, such as nerve injury or musculoskeletal abnormalities (non-CRPS). METHODS: In the classic 'beads ta…
