Energy based feature extraction for classification of sleep apnea syndrome.

In this paper it is aimed to classify sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) by using discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) and an artificial neural network (ANN). The abdominal and thoracic respiration signals are separated into spectral components by using multi-resolution DWT. Then the energy of these spectral components are applied to the inputs of the ANN. The neural network was configured to give three outputs to classify the SAS situation of the subject. The apnea can be mainly classified into three types: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), central sleep apnea (CSA) and mixed sleep apnea (MSA). During OSA,

Spatial classification of glaucomatous visual field loss.

AIMS: To develop and describe an objective classification system for the spatial patterns of visual field loss found in glaucoma. METHODS: The 560 Humphrey visual field analyser (program 24-2) records were used to train an artificial neural network (ANN). The type of network used, a Kohonen self organising feature map (SOM), was configured to organise the visual field defects into 25 classes of superior visual field loss and 25 classes of inferior visual field loss. Each group of 25 classes was arranged in a 5 by 5 map. RESULTS: The SOM successfully classified the defects on the basis of the

One-click reconstruction in single-molecule localization microscopy via experimental parameter-aware deep learning.

Deep neural networks have led to significant advancements in microscopy image generation and analysis. In single-molecule localization-based super-resolution microscopy, neural networks are capable of predicting fluorophore positions from high-density emitter data, thus reducing acquisition time, and increasing imaging throughput. However, neural network-based solutions in localization microscopy require intensive human intervention and often compromise between model performance and its generalization. Researchers have to manually tune simulated training data parameters to resemble their exper

A swarm optimized neural network system for classification of microcalcification in mammograms.

Early detection of microcalcification clusters in breast tissue will significantly increase the survival rate of the patients. Radiologists use mammography for breast cancer diagnosis at early stage. It is a very challenging and difficult task for radiologists to correctly classify the abnormal regions in the breast tissue, because mammograms are noisy images. To improve the accuracy rate of detection of breast cancer, a novel intelligent computer aided classifier is used, which detects the presence of microcalcification clusters. In this paper, an innovative approach for detection of microcal

GiGCN: a network-based framework for uncovering synthetic lethal and viable genetic interactions.

Genetic interactions (GIs) underpin the functional connectivity of genes and pathways, and are important for dissecting genotype-phenotype relationships and identifying therapeutic targets for diseases. However, the scale of the human genome restricts systematic experimental interrogation of GIs. Existing computational tools focus on predicting synthetic lethality (SL) and synthetic viability (SV), the two primary forms of GIs, yet their accuracy and biological interpretability are compromised by inadequate modeling of the molecular mechanisms behind positive and negative interactions, as well

Applications of generative adversarial networks in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of ophthalmic diseases.

PURPOSE: Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are key components of many artificial intelligence (AI) systems that are applied to image-informed bioengineering and medicine. GANs combat key limitations facing deep learning models: small, unbalanced datasets containing few images of severe disease. The predictive capacity of conditional GANs may also be extremely useful in managing disease on an individual basis. This narrative review focusses on the application of GANs in ophthalmology, in order to provide a critical account of the current state and ongoing challenges for healthcare professi

Computational evidence for an inverse relationship between retinal and brain complexity.

Visual neuroscientists have long observed an inverse relationship between brain and retinal complexity: As brain complexity increases across species, retinas adapt to simpler visual processing. Lindsey et al. previously provided a computational explanation for this pattern, showing that shallow networks encode complex features in their first stage of processing, whereas deep networks encode simpler features. Here, these findings are extended to a suite of representational analyses and show that shallow networks generate high-dimensional representations with linear decision boundaries and speci

Hyperelastic Cardiovascular NN-FE: A Framework for Integrating Nonlinear Finite Element Solvers with Neural Networks for the Hyperelastic Modeling of Cardiac Valve Tissue.

Accurately predicting tissue mechanics of cardiac valves is crucial for computational biomechanics and surgical planning. Conventional finite elements (FEs) entail high computational costs when modeling real-world applications, whereas purely data-driven approaches lack physical consistency and interpretability. We present a hybrid, physics-informed neural network framework called NN-FE, which combines a feedforward neural network with a nonlinear FE solver to predict the deformation of the tricuspid valve posterior leaflet (TVPL) under quasi-static biaxial loading. For collection of biomechan

Cerebellum-inspired neural network of supervised learning with tensor-based sparse coding for multi-class classification.

Under the Marr-Ito-Albus framework, the cerebellum performs supervised learning in Purkinje cells upon the unsupervised sparse representations generated within granule cells, contributing fundamentally to associative learning in motor control. However, the specific mechanisms through which cerebellar circuitry and plasticity rules enable supervised learning, and properties of the sparse coding induced by cerebellar architectural constraints, remain poorly characterized. To address this, we first established a sparse coding mechanism inspired by anatomical and physiological properties of the gr

Interpretation of basal nuclei in brain dopamine transporter scans using a deep convolutional neural network.

OBJECTIVE: Functional imaging using the dopamine transporter (DAT) as a biomarker has proven effective in assessing dopaminergic neuron degeneration in the striatum. In assessing the neuron degeneration, visual and semiquantitative methods are used to interpret DAT single-photon emission tomography (SPECT) scans based on striatal to background activity, striatal shape, and symmetry. Visual analysis, however, is subjective and reviewer dependent, whereas semiquantitative methods are operator dependent. Our goal in the current study was to derive results via deep learning to facilitate the clini

Decoding Neural Activity in Sulcal and White Matter Areas of the Brain to Accurately Predict Individual Finger Movement and Tactile Stimuli of the Human Hand.

Millions of people worldwide suffer motor or sensory impairment due to stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, diabetes, and motor neuron diseases such as ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). A brain-computer interface (BCI), which links the brain directly to a computer, offers a new way to study the brain and potentially restore impairments in patients living with these debilitating conditions. One of the challenges currently facing BCI technology, however, is to minimize surgical risk while maintaining efficacy. Minimally invasive techniques, such as stereoele

A novel multi-layer security framework for medical image transmission in cloud-based wireless body area networks (BAN) using XAI-guided obfuscation and WDTW encryption.

The existing frameworks for medical image encryption in the context of BANs have three major limitations: encrypting the whole image consumes enormous amount of processing time; failure to integrate explainable AI for identifying the importance of regions and prioritizing the same for permutation and XORing and inability of verifying the lossless integrity of the decryption process. To tackle these limitations, this paper introduces a novel scheme called weighted dynamic transform encryption (WDTW) for adaptive encryption of medical images. Firstly, a model based on convolutional neural networ

Annotation-efficient medical image segmentation via cross-latent graphs and vector-quantized memory.

Medical image segmentation plays a vital role in computer-assisted diagnosis, yet the heavy reliance on large-scale pixel-level annotations limits its scalability in real-world clinical applications. To alleviate this bottleneck, we propose a framework for annotation-efficient medical segmentation that leverages sparse supervision from scribbles and points. The framework is guided by three key principles. First, an auxiliary reconstruction branch is employed to enhance supervision and enrich feature representations derived from limited annotations. Second, a vector quantization (VQ) memory ban
