Four curious cases of cone-beam computed tomography.

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has become popular, and its many inherent advantages are indisputable. Nevertheless, CBCT is prescribed cautiously because the radiation dosage is higher than that of conventional radiography. When and to what extent should CBCT be prescribed for orthodontic patients? The purpose of this article is to present 4 curious cases in which a considerable discrepancy was found between the conventional panoramic radiograph and the CBCT view. Is it time to spare patients an unnecessary conventional panoramic radiograph and shift to CBCT for all patients?

Self-reported dental and oral injuries in a population of adults aged 18-50 years.

Few population-based studies of traumatic dental injury in adults have been undertaken. The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence and severity of injuries to the mouth and teeth among adults aged 18-50 years living in the Canadian province of Ontario. A telephone survey was undertaken based on random digit dialling and 2001 adults in the target age range were interviewed. Overall, 15.5% reported a history of injury to the mouth and teeth. Of these, one-third reported two or more episodes of injury. Males were more likely than females to report injury and to have experienced more

Contemporary endodontic retreatments: an analysis based on clinical treatment findings.

A prospective in vivo investigation was conducted to determine radiographic and clinical factors associated with contemporary nonsurgical endodontic retreatments. Approximately 1,100 failing endodontically treated teeth were screened to determine an appropriate treatment plan. Using magnification, 337 consecutive retreatment cases were evaluated and treated. The vast majority of the retreated cases involved multiple factors. Eighty-five percent of the cases presented with periradicular radiolucencies. Sixty-five percent of the cases demonstrated poor radiographic obturation quality. Associated

Revascularization of an immature permanent tooth with apical periodontitis and sinus tract.

A necrotic immature mandibular second premolar with periapical involvement in a 13-year-old patient was treated. Instead of the standard root canal treatment protocol and apexification, antimicrobial agents were used in the canal, after which the canal was left empty. Radiographic examination showed the start of apical closure 5 months after the completion of the antimicrobial protocol. Thickening of the canal wall and complete apical closure was confirmed 30 months after the treatment, indicating the revascularization potential of a young permanent tooth pulp into a bacteria-free root canal s

Optimising dental restorative composites: Numerical and statistical analysis of polymerization shrinkage and elastic modulus effects.

Light-cured resin-based dental restorative composites face challenges from polymerization shrinkage, which induces stress, potentially leading to microleakage, debonding, and recurrent caries. The elastic modulus (E) of these composites also influences stress distribution, with high-stress concentrations potentially leading to fractures in restored teeth. While finite element analysis (FEA) has been used to understand stress distribution, there is a lack of comprehensive studies exploring the combined effects of volumetric polymerization shrinkage (PS%) and E on restored molars. No research ha

Mechanisms of dental injuries in basketball, United States, 2003-2022.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Oral injuries such as oral soft tissue lacerations and contusions can occur in basketball by mechanisms such as running into other players or falling. Given a high enough impact force, dental injuries such as tooth fractures and avulsions can occur. Previous research has studied the different types of oral injuries as well as the mechanisms that cause them. Yet, the mechanisms resulting in dental injuries have remained unexplored. The aims of this study were to investigate the distribution of different oral injuries within each injury mechanism and evaluate which mechanisms wer…

Preclinical models of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ).

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a potentially severe adverse event affecting patients with cancer and patients with osteoporosis who have been treated with powerful antiresorptives (pARs) or angiogenesis inhibitors (AgIs). pARs, including nitrogen-containing bisphosphonates (N-BPs; e.g., zoledronic acid, alendronate) and anti-RANKL antibodies (e.g., denosumab), are used to manage bone metastases in patients with cancer or to prevent fragility fractures in patients with osteoporosis. Though significant advances have been made in understanding MRONJ, its pathophysiology is

Removal of Long-Term Broken Roots Displaced Into the Maxillary Sinus by Endoscopic Assistant.

PURPOSE: This report presented a patient with 2 long-term broken roots displaced in left maxillary sinus. The residual root fragments made the patient uncomfortable in both mind and body and interfered with prosthodontics work. The application of endoscope combined with piezoelectric device both helps in removing the broken roots successfully with minimally surgical injury and preserves the residual alveolar bone. METHODS: Computed tomography scans and 3-dimensional reconstructions located the broken roots. A 1.0 cm × 1.5  cm rectangle bone window on anterolateral sinus wall was opened by a p

The effect of the post length and cusp coverage on the cycling and static load of endodontically treated maxillary premolars.

In endodontically treated teeth, cuspal coverage plays a fundamental role in reducing the risk of fracture. However, the adhesive techniques with or without fiber post increased the possibilities in restoring root-filled teeth. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of the fiber post and/or post length and/or cuspal coverage on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated maxillary premolars. Seventy intact single-rooted maxillary premolars were selected and divided in seven groups of ten each: "intact teeth" (control), "inlay without fiber post" (G1), "inlay with long fiber po

Effectiveness of endodontic tissue engineering in treatment of apical periodontitis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Regenerative endodontics has evolved in recent years with tissue engineering concepts in particular appearing promising. Endodontic tissue engineering (ETE) describes the various approaches based on the orthograde introduction of scaffolds or biomaterials (with or without cells) into the root canal to achieve pulp tissue regeneration. There are currently no systematic reviews investigating whether ETE is a suitable method for the treatment of endodontic disease in both mature and immature permanent teeth. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this systematic review was to determine the effec
