Hypotony after trabeculectomy (TLE) can lead to choroidal detachment (CD) and maculopathy. We present a case of retinal detachment caused by extensive retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) tears following hypotony following TLE surgery. PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence and risk factors for reduced endothelial cell density before cataract surgery.

METHODS: The records of 1304 eyes of 700 consecutive Japanese patients who had cataract surgery from 1995 through 2000 were retrospectively reviewed. The incidence of reduced endothelial cell density to less than 2000 cells/mm(2) was calculated, and potential risk factors for the reduced density were analyzed using logistic regression analysis.

Acute vision loss can be transient (lasting <24 hours) or persistent (lasting >24 hours). When patients present with acute vision loss, it is important to ascertain the duration of vision loss and whether it is a unilateral process affecting one eye or a bilateral process affecting both eyes.
