The epidemiology of eye injuries in Western Australia: a retrospective 10-year study.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Eye injuries constitute a significant cause of preventable lifelong visual impairment or blindness. It is important to identify the context in which these injuries occur to develop intervention programs to reduce the incidence and severity of injury. BACKGROUND: To evaluate the nature, external cause, place of occurrence and incidence rate of eye injuries treated at hospitals in Western Australia. METHODS: Retrospective, population-based study of patients presenting to all emergency departments or admitted to hospital with primary or secondary eye injuries between 2005 an

Who is coercively admitted to psychiatric wards? Epidemiological analysis of inpatient records of involuntary psychiatric admissions to a University General Hospital in Greece for the years 2008-2017.

BACKGROUND: Involuntary psychiatric admissions are a widely used practice despite ethical concerns about coercion. There are particular concerns that vulnerable groups, such as single, unemployed or racial minorities, may be more subjected to such practices. AIM: We aimed to investigate the social patterns of involuntary psychiatric admissions from 2008 to 2017 at University General Hospital in Ioannina, Greece. METHOD: We retrospectively assessed inpatient records from 2008 to 2017 of patients admitted to the Department of Psychiatry of the Ioannina University General Hospital, Northwestern

Lunate Dislocation Followed by Non-Traumatic Swimming: A Case Report.

A few numbers of patients admitted to the emergency department due to the lunate dislocation can cause a direct injury to the wrist ligament, which mainly occurs after wrist trauma, and often diagnosis is far from the mind. A 32 years old man due to severe pain and tenderness of the wrist started the previous day during swimming, referred to Emergency Department of Imam Reza Hospital of Mashhad, 2012. He did not recall any history of direct trauma to the wrist. However, he was prescribed NSAID and wrist splint, but the pain did not improve. In physical examination, the localized tenderness of

A case study of a massive staphylococcal food poisoning incident.

In the summer of 1998, approximately 8000 individuals gathered to celebrate a Catholic priest's ordination in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Within hours of food consumption, 4000 patients experienced acute gastroenteritis, and approximately 2000 (50%) overwhelmed Emergency Departments of 26 local hospitals. Of the triaged patients, 396 ( approximately 20%) required subsequent admission, and of these patients, 81 ( approximately 20%) were admitted to intensive care units. A total of 16 ( approximately 20% of those admitted to the ICU) patients progressed on to develop irreversible multi-system shock an

The effect of emergency department pharmacists on drug overuse and drug underuse in patients with an ADE-related hospitalisation: a controlled intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Drug overuse or drug underuse are the most common causes of adverse drug events and can lead to hospital admissions. Using clinical pharmacists in the emergency department may improve patient safety as they are specialised in recognising of adverse drug events and tackling drug overuse and drug underuse. This study tested the effect of an emergency department pharmacist on the number of medication changes for drug overuse and drug underuse taking place in patients with an adverse drug event-related hospitalisation following an emergency department visit. METHODS: A multicenter pro

[Scorpion envenomation treated at Beni Mellal Provincial Hospital in Morocco].

The Beni Mellal province has one of the highest incidences of scorpion envenomation in Morocco. The purpose of this retrospective study was to report and analyze data recorded in scorpion envenomation victims admitted to the intensive care department of the Beni Mellal Provincial Hospital. A total of 63 patients were admitted in 2005. Most stings occurred during summer mainly in June and July. Most (60.3%) occurred at night between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Most patients were children younger than 16 years (mean, 10.2 +/- 12.9 years). At the time of admission, general manifestations of envenomation we

Skull roentgenography in the evaluation of head injury.

The role of skull roentgenograms in determining choice of therapy, hospital admission, and length of hospitalization was evaluated in 106 consecutive patients with head injury. Thirty patients were discharged from the emergency room after initial evaluation and had uneventful recovery. Seventy-six were admitted and discharged without operative treatment one to ten days later. Only five had pathologic skull findings roentgenographically. Of these, one was discharged from the emergency department; the remaining four were admitted because of abnormal neurologic findings. All five recovered uneven

Diabetes at the front door. A guideline for dealing with glucose related emergencies at the time of acute hospital admission from the Joint British Diabetes Society (JBDS) for Inpatient Care Group.

People with diabetes account for nearly one-fifth of all inpatients in English and Welsh hospitals; of these, up to 90% are admitted as an emergency. Most are admitted for a reason other than diabetes with only 8% requiring admission for a diabetes-specific cause. Healthcare professionals working in emergency departments experience numerous clinical challenges, notwithstanding the need to know whether each individual with diabetes requires urgent admission. This document has been developed and written by experts in the field, and reviewed by the parent organizations of the Joint British Diabet

[Clinically relevant pathogens isolated from blood cultures of inpatient treated children (1972 to 1985)].

Blood cultures are extremely useful in diagnosing various bacteremic diseases in childhood. The results obtained in this study are presented in relation to two periods of equal length (1972-1978, 1979-1985). At the present time there are about 22 relevant isolates from blood cultures per 1000 admitted children and year in the Department of Pediatrics, and about 3 isolates per 1000 admitted children and year in the Department of Pediatric Surgery, respectively. From newborns we isolated most frequently E. coli, Staph. aureus, B-Streptococci, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and ye

[Accidents a matter of chance? The significance of lunar phases and biorhythms in trauma patients].

The belief that supernatural forces influence man's fate appears to be increasing. Many people are convinced that unknown forces can cause injuries. From a multitude of proposed possibilities, we selected two factors that are claimed to affect the incidence of accidents. The first theory holds that more accidents occur at the time of full moon. The second theory concerns the three so-called biorhythms with their supposedly critical days (physical, emotional, intellectual). The effect of the lunar phase and the three biorhythms on accidents was determined from the dates of accident and birth of

Endotracheal intubation and pediatric status asthmaticus: site of original care affects treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Status asthmaticus is a common cause of admission to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Children unresponsive to medical therapies may require endotracheal intubation; however, this treatment carries significant risk, and thresholds for intubation vary. Our hypothesis was that children who sought care at community hospitals received less aggressive treatment and more frequent intubation than children who sought care at a children's hospital. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: A university-affiliated children's hospital PICU. PATIENTS: We retrospectively examined d

[Description of a U.S. emergency department and its patient population during a year].

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, Emergency Medicine (EM) is recognized as an independent medical speciality, which focuses on the initial evaluation and treatment of all patients with acute illness or injury. Patients have free access to the emergency department (ED), which serves as the main portal of entry for most acute patients coming into the hospital. The ED is staffed with EM specialists at all hours. The purpose of this study was to describe a U.S. tertiary care hospital ED and the patient population that is cared for there. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive retrospective study o
