Calprotectin levels in gingival crevicular fluid predict disease activity in patients treated for generalized aggressive periodontitis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Clinical parameters such as probing depth and bleeding on probing are commonly used for monitoring after periodontal treatment. However, these parameters have poor prognostic utility. The biomarker calprotectin is used to monitor conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease because of its ability to predict disease activity. Levels of calprotectin in gingival crevicular fluid correlate with periodontal disease severity and treatment outcome. The validity of calprotectin as predictor for future periodontal disease activity has not yet been investigated. MATERIAL AND

Genetic variation of myeloperoxidase gene contributes to aggressive periodontitis: a preliminary association study in Turkish population.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) is a lysosomal enzyme found in the azurophilic granules of polymorphonuclear leukocytes. It is involved in the defense against periodontal bacteria, and is also able to mediate inflammatory tissue destruction in aggressive and chronic periodontitis. The aim of this study was to explore the association between MPO-463G/A gene polymorphism and aggressive periodontitis (AgP) and chronic periodontitis (CP). The study included 147 subjects. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), plaque index (PI), and gingival index (GI) were recorded as the clinical parameters. G

Investigation of the interleukin-1 gene cluster polymorphisms in Jordanian patients with chronic and aggressive periodontitis.

OBJECTIVE: Interleukin-1 (IL-1) is a proinflammatory cytokine that is highly elevated in response to bacterial biofilms and is a potential risk factor for periodontal diseases. IL-1 gene polymorphisms have been associated with the IL-1 level. The aim of this study was to investigate if IL-1 gene cluster polymorphisms are associated with chronic (CP) and aggressive (AgP) periodontitis in a Jordanian population. METHODS: A total of 100 CP, 80 AgP patients and 80 controls were genotyped using PCR for IL-1RN-86-bp VNTR and PCR-RFLP for IL-1A-889, IL-1B-511, -35, +3953, and IL-1RN +8006, +9589, +1

Maintenance after a complex orthoperio treatment in a case of generalized aggressive periodontitis: 7-year result.

BACKGROUND: Generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) encompasses a distinct type of periodontal disease exhibiting much more rapid periodontal tissue destruction than chronic periodontitis. The best method for management of GAgP may include the use of both regenerative periodontal techniques and the administration of systemic antibiotics. METHODS: The treatment of a case of GAgP over a period of 6.7 years is presented in this case report. Initial periodontal therapy (week 1- 32) consisted of supragingival plaque control and three appointments of scaling and root planing. Based on the perio

Localized severe aggressive periodontitis. Disease progression and tooth preservation: a short case report over 14 years.

A case of a 31-year-old female with aggressive periodontitis over 14 years is presented. From 1993 to 2000, no periodontal therapy occurred; disease development and progression could be reconstructed upon radiographic findings. In 2000, full-mouth disinfection therapy and antibiotic therapy was performed, as well as regenerative surgical treatments. Seven years after surgical treatment, stable periodontal conditions and clear bone regeneration in the surgical areas was evident.

Soluble interleukin-1 receptor type II levels in gingival crevicular fluid in aggressive and chronic periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: Interleukin (IL)-1 is closely related to the initiation and progression of periodontal disease. IL-1 levels in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of subjects with periodontitis are higher than those in periodontally healthy controls, and the levels of IL-1 correlate with disease severity. However, soluble IL-1 receptor type II (sIL-1RII), which acts as a decoy receptor for IL-1s, has not been investigated in detail in periodontal disease. The purpose of this study was to measure sIL-1RII levels in the GCF of subjects with chronic or aggressive periodontitis; the correlation betwee

The use of enamel matrix protein in the treatment of localized aggressive periodontitis: a case report.

The previously named localized juvenile periodontitis (LJP), recently reclassified as localized aggressive periodontitis (LAP) seen in young people, is a rare condition characterized by severe periodontal destruction around first molars and incisors in individuals with little or no accumulation of visible plaque and/or calculus. Treatment of this condition has traditionally included periodontal surgery and adjunctive antibiotic therapy. Even though several periodontal regeneration techniques in these patients have been reported, there have been no reports of the use of the enamel matrix protei

A Putative Association of a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in GPR126 with Aggressive Periodontitis in a Japanese Population.

Periodontitis is an inflammatory disease causing loss of tooth-supporting periodontal tissue. Disease susceptibility to the rapidly progressive form of periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis (AgP), appears to be influenced by genetic risk factors. To identify these in a Japanese population, we performed whole exome sequencing of 41 unrelated generalized or localized AgP patients. We found that AgP is putatively associated with single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs536714306 in the G-protein coupled receptor 126 gene, GPR126 [c.3086 G>A (p.Arg1029Gln)]. Since GPR126 activates the cAMP/PKA sig

Estimation and Co-Relation of the Neutrophil Count and Neutrophil Chemotaxis in Patients With Gingivitis, Chronic Periodontitis, and Localized Aggressive Periodontitis Compared With Healthy Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Neutrophils are the most plentiful WBCs found in human blood. They are the first cells to respond to wounds and foreign invaders in the human body. They help the body fight infections. The neutrophil count may be used to check for infections, inflammation, or any other underlying conditions. The lower the neutrophil count, the higher the infection risk. Chemotaxis is the ability of the body cells to move in a specific direction as a response to a chemical stimulus. Neutrophil chemotaxis, a feature of the innate immune response, is the directed migration of neutrophils from one si
