Estimated Prevalence and Care Pathway of Feeding and Eating Disorders in a French Pediatric Population.

Feeding and Eating Disorders (FED) are mostly described in infants and adolescents but are less well-known in children. Information on the prevalence of FED in the general pediatric population is still limited. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence and the care pathway of FED in a population aged 0-18 years old, using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-5 classification. Two physicians interviewed 401 families using a questionnaire including demographics, BMI, dietary behavior data, and age-appropriate screening tools. Qualitative and quantitative var

Classification of feeding and eating disorders: review of evidence and proposals for ICD-11.

Current classification of eating disorders is failing to classify most clinical presentations; ignores continuities between child, adolescent and adult manifestations; and requires frequent changes of diagnosis to accommodate the natural course of these disorders. The classification is divorced from clinical practice, and investigators of clinical trials have felt compelled to introduce unsystematic modifications. Classification of feeding and eating disorders in ICD-11 requires substantial changes to remediate the shortcomings. We review evidence on the developmental and cross-cultural differ

Food-related quality of life in adults with inflammatory bowel disease is associated with restrictive eating behaviour, disease activity and surgery: A prospective multicentre observational study.

BACKGROUND: Measuring food-related quality of life (FRQoL) quantifies the psychosocial impact of eating and drinking. FRQoL and associated factors are not well explored in people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), despite IBD being a chronic disease affecting the digestive tract. The present study aimed to characterise and identify any patient or disease-related predictors of FRQoL in individuals with IBD. METHODS: Adults with a formal diagnosis of IBD were recruited to a prospective multicentre cross-sectional study between April 2018 and December 2019. Participants completed questionnai

[Diagnosis of Feeding and Eating Disorders Using DSM-5 -Checkpoints on Making a Diagnosis-].

We reviewed the diagnostic checkpoints associated with the diagnosis of feeding and eat- ing disorders (FED) using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) - 5, focusing on two new categories : avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and binge-eating disorder (BED). There are some differences between the diagnostic checkpoints for FED employed in Japan and Western countries. In Japan, some patients with anorexia ner- vosa (AN) -like conditions do not exhibit any evidence of fat phobia or a distorted view of their body weight and shape. Accordingly, we need to d

Prevalence, Characteristics, and Genetic Architecture of Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Phenotypes.

IMPORTANCE: A narrow range of food consumption and/or restricted eating is a core feature of avoidant/restrictive food intake (ARFI) disorder. However, there is limited knowledge of developmental characteristics of children with ARFI and its etiological influences, which constrains research, prevention, and intervention efforts. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of ARFI phenotypes in a population-based sample, examine developmental characteristics across childhood, and investigate the genetic architecture of ARFI using genome-wide association analyses. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS:

Validation of the nine item ARFID screen (NIAS) subscales for distinguishing ARFID presentations and screening for ARFID.

OBJECTIVE: The Nine Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) Screen (NIAS) has three subscales aligned with ARFID presentations but clinically validated cutoff scores have not been identified. We aimed to examine NIAS subscale (picky eating, appetite, fear) validity to: (1) capture clinically-diagnosed ARFID presentations; (2) differentiate ARFID from other eating disorders (other-ED); and (3) capture ARFID symptoms among individuals with ARFID, individuals with other-ED, and nonclinical participants. METHOD: Participants included outpatients (ages 10-76 years; 75% female) diagn

Calorie Needs of Older People With Restrictive Eating Disorders Undergoing Refeeding.

OBJECTIVE: While historically viewed as illnesses of youth, restrictive eating disorders (EDs), including anorexia nervosa, restricting subtype (AN-R), and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), affect women of all ages, yet there is limited understanding of effective interventions and best practices for refeeding of older patients. This study examined whether age affects kcal needs during refeeding and whether caloric needs differ between diagnoses. METHOD: In this retrospective cohort study, average kcal needs for a one-point increase in body mass index (BMI) were assessed for 4

Frequency of Substance Use in Adolescents With Eating Disorders and its Association With Eating Disorder Medical Severity.

ObjectiveThe developmental characteristics of adolescence make them more susceptible to eating disorders (ED) and substance use (SU). We aimed to compare the prevalence of SU in adolescents with ED and controls, and among ED subgroups; and to examine the relationship between SU and the medical severity of EDs.MethodsWe enrolled 510 adolescents with ED and 520 age- and sex-matched controls. Current SU (≥1 occasion in the past 30 days) was obtained from psychosocial interviews. Medical severity parameters were examined for anorexia nervosa (AN)/atypical AN (AAN) and bulimia nervosa (BN).ResultsT

Prevalence in primary school youth of pica and rumination behavior: The understudied feeding disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Little epidemiological evidence exists on rumination disorder behavior (RB) and pica behavior (PB). We examined prevalence of RB and PB and presence of comorbid feeding/eating disorder symptoms among school-aged children. METHOD: In elementary schools in Switzerland, 1,430 children (54.0% female) ages 7-13 completed the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire for children (ChEDE-Q) and the Eating Disturbances in Youth Questionnaire (EDY-Q). RESULTS: EDY-Q behavior frequency showed 9.7% reported RB only, 10.0% reported PB only, and 3.1% reported RB + PB (≥1 on 0-6 Likert scale).

A case of choking phobia: towards a conceptual approach.

Choking phobia, also known as phagophobia or swallowing phobia is an uncommon clinical entity that has been underappreciated and is included in the new DSM-5 and upcoming ICD-11 diagnostic category of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. Phenomenologically distinct from other eating disorders, it is characterized by the phobic stimulus of swallowing that results in the avoidance of food or drinks, and ultimately to low weight, social withdrawal, anxiety and depression states. Its prevalence and long-term course on the general population still needs to be determined, probably reflecting y

Research progress on dietary characteristics and feeding interventions in children with autism spectrum disorder: a narrative review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often experience feeding difficulties, including extreme food selectivity (FS), disruptive eating behaviors, and in severe cases, avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). These issues can result in unbalanced nutrient intake, impaired growth and development, worsened gastrointestinal symptoms (GIS), and significant feeding burdens for families. This review aims to summarize the dietary characteristics of children with ASD, examine the underlying causes, and evaluate common treatments. The primary objective is to p
