A spectrum of complications of orbital roof fractures is discussed. The authors have had cooperation with the neurosurgical service in treating nine cases. Careful ocular and neurologic examination of the patient is emphasized in an attempt to avoid ocular complications, orbital deformities, ocular muscular imbalance, enophthalmos, blepharoptosis, and intracranial complications. The incidence and causes of perioperative ulnar neuropathy in a prospective series of 203 consecutive patients were examined. Three percent of patients had ulnar neuropathy develop in the entire prospective series. The incidence was 6% in patients having total hip arthroplasty. There was a highly significant association between a tilted body position on the operating table and development of ulnar neuropathy on the contralateral side. This position rotates the arm internally and places the ulnar nerve at risk for direct compression.

A method is described for use of high-density barium suspension (250% wt/vol) during compression filming performed in conjunction with the double-contrast examination of the stomach. The technique employs control of the distribution of barium within the stomach by table tilting and use of the vertebral column to stabilize the posterior wall of the stomach. The technique allows routine demonstration of the area gastricae and gastric erosions on compression films, as well as detection of anterior wall lesions that may be undetected by double-contrast films.
