Compulsive-like behavior in individuals with Down syndrome: its relation to mental age level, adaptive and maladaptive behavior.

This study examined the nature of repetitive, ritualistic, and compulsive-like behaviors in 50 typically developing children and 50 individuals with Down syndrome (DS), matched on mental age (MA; M = 59.72 months). Parents reported on their children's compulsive-like behaviors-including ritualistic habits-and perfectionistic behaviors, as well as their children's adaptive and maladaptive behaviors. Results indicated that children with DS show similar MA-related changes in compulsive-like behaviors compared to the MA-matched comparison group. Younger children (both typical and DS) exhibited sig

Statistical considerations for the platform trial in COVID-19 vaccine priming and boosting.

The Platform trial In COVID-19 priming and BOOsting (PICOBOO) is a multi-site, adaptive platform trial designed to generate evidence of the immunogenicity, reactogenicity, and cross-protection of different booster vaccination strategies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its variants, specific for the Australian context. The PICOBOO trial randomises participants to receive one of three COVID-19 booster vaccine brands (Pfizer, Moderna, Novavax) available for use in Australia, where the vaccine brand subtypes vary over time according to the national vaccine

Orofacial manifestations of SAPHO syndrome: a systematic review of case reports.

SAPHO (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis) syndrome is a poorly known disease with cutaneous and osteo-articular manifestations requiring a multidisciplinary care. The aim of this study was to review the case reports that have described oral manifestations in patients suffering for this syndrome. A systematic review of case reports was performed on PubMed and Science Direct on January 2020 among all the articles dealing with the disease. In vitro, preclinical, and clinical studies have not been included to select only the case reports. Eighteen articles, published between

Expanding the phenotype of Triple X syndrome: A comparison of prenatal versus postnatal diagnosis.

Triple X syndrome (47, XXX) occurs in approximately 1:1,000 female births and has a variable phenotype of physical and psychological features. Prenatal diagnosis rates of 47, XXX are increasing due to non-invasive prenatal genetic testing. Previous studies suggest that prenatal diagnosed females have better neurodevelopmental outcomes. This cross-sectional study describes diagnosis, physical features, medical problems, and neurodevelopmental features in a large cohort of females with 47, XXX. Evaluation included review of medical and developmental history, physical exam, cognitive, and adaptiv

Two coronary "orphan" diseases in search of clinical consideration: coronary syndromes x and y.

We set out to describe the clinical characteristics of patients presenting with acute or stable coronary syndromes and no stenosis in epicardial coronaries. Although the existence of patients who experience typical angina and who have intact epicardial coronaries is well accepted, the pathophysiology of cardiac ischemia in this setting remains poorly understood. In typical coronary syndrome X, it is believed that at least two components play a role: the first is the incapacity of coronary resistance vessels to adapt to situations of increased blood demand, resulting in demand ischemia; the sec

BACKGROUND: These twenty last years, the metabolic syndrome was accused in various human pathologies including android obesity and type 2 diabetes. In obesity, increased body weight is frequently associated with excessive caloric food and sedentary activities. The Behaviour Eating Disorders (BED) is involved in over-consumption alimentary. In Algeria, we observed increasingly deviations in life-style alimentary, from the Mediterranean-Cretan model to American fast-food model. AIM: To study interactions between the BED, hormonal secretions and metabolic syndrome parameters. METHODS: The prese

The immune system in Down Syndrome: Autoimmunity and severe infections.

Over 200,000 individuals in the United States alone live with Down Syndrome (DS), the most common genetic disorder associated with intellectual disability. DS has a constellation of features across the body, including dysregulation of the immune system. Individuals with DS have both a higher frequency of autoimmunity and more severe infections than the general population, highlighting the importance of understanding the immune system in this population. Individuals with DS present with dysregulation of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. Elevated cytokine levels, increased type I and

Recent progress in the research of exosomes and Dscam regulated crab antiviral immunity.

Crustaceans, including crab and shrimp, generally lack lymphocytes or adaptive immunity, and they rely solely on innate immunity for pathogen defense. The white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) causes the most prevalent viral disease in penaeid shrimps, which are widely cultured species in coastal waters worldwide. Numerous studies have elucidated the role of the immune system in protecting shrimps from WSSV infection for the development of safe and effective defensive strategies against WSSV. Although WSSV has a wide host range, it appears to exhibit high pathogenicity and virulence in only penaeid

Epigenetic Etiology of Intellectual Disability.

Intellectual disability (ID) is a prevailing neurodevelopmental condition associated with impaired cognitive and adaptive behaviors. Many chromatin-modifying enzymes and other epigenetic regulators have been genetically associated with ID disorders (IDDs). Here we review how alterations in the function of histone modifiers, chromatin remodelers, and methyl-DNA binding proteins contribute to neurodevelopmental defects and altered brain plasticity. We also discuss how progress in human genetics has led to the generation of mouse models that unveil the molecular etiology of ID, and outline the di

Partial lipodystrophy: Clinical presentation and treatment.

Lipodystrophic syndromes are acquired or genetic rare diseases, characterized by a generalized or partial lack of adipose tissue leading to metabolic alterations linked to strong insulin resistance. They are probably underdiagnosed, especially for partial forms. They are characterized by a lack of adipose tissue or a lack of adipose development leading to metabolic disorders associated with often severe insulin resistance, hypertriglyceridemia and hepatic steatosis. In partial forms of lipodystrophy, these mechanisms are aggravated by excess visceral adipose tissue and/or subcutaneous adipose

Genetics, evolution, and adaptive significance of the selfing syndrome in the genus Capsella.

The change from outbreeding to selfing is one of the most frequent evolutionary transitions in flowering plants. It is often accompanied by characteristic morphological and functional changes to the flowers (the selfing syndrome), including reduced flower size and opening. Little is known about the developmental and genetic basis of the selfing syndrome, as well as its adaptive significance. Here, we address these issues using the two closely related species Capsella grandiflora (the ancestral outbreeder) and red shepherd's purse (Capsella rubella, the derived selfer). In C. rubella, petal siz

Heterogeneous adaptation of cysteine reactivity to a covalent oncometabolite.

An important context in which metabolism influences tumorigenesis is the genetic cancer syndrome hereditary leiomyomatosis and renal cell carcinoma (HLRCC), a disease in which mutation of the tricarboxylic acid cycle enzyme fumarate hydratase (FH) causes hyperaccumulation of fumarate. This electrophilic oncometabolite can alter gene activity at the level of transcription, via reversible inhibition of epigenetic dioxygenases, as well as posttranslationally, via covalent modification of cysteine residues. To better understand the potential for metabolites to influence posttranslational modificat

Pallidal deep brain stimulation combined with capsulotomy for Tourette's syndrome with psychiatric comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: A current challenge is finding an effective and safe treatment for severely disabled patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) and comorbid psychiatric disorders, in whom conventional treatments have failed. The authors aimed to evaluate the utility of globus pallidus internus deep brain stimulation (GPi-DBS) combined with bilateral anterior capsulotomy in treating these clinically challenging patients. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective review of the clinical history and outcomes of 10 severely disabled patients with treatment-refractory TS and a psychiatric comorbidity,

Prevention of hip and knee injuries in ballet dancers.

Hip problems form about 10% (7.0 to 14.2%) of most published series of ballet injuries. The abnormally large range of external rotation needed for a perfect turnout is primarily due to soft tissue adaptation, more readily achieved in the young dancer. Insufficient range of motion at the hip throws considerable stress on the other lower limb segments. The snapping hip syndrome is common (43.8% of hip problems), with about one-third associated with pain. A tight iliotibial band may contribute to this, and balanced flexibility requires special attention to abductor stretching. The external clicki

Behavioural, morphological and life-history adjustments in the early steps of colonising restricted semi-natural environments in wild house mice.

BACKGROUND: Invasive species often exhibit rapid adjustment and establishment in novel environments. However, the mechanisms underlying this process remain poorly understood, particularly during the early stages of invasion. Understanding how behavioural, morphological, and life-history traits vary across generations under different environmental conditions is important for identifying the factors that contribute to invasion success. We investigated how different diet compositions influence these traits across multiple generations (F0-F3) of wild house mice in semi-natural enclosures, with one

[Neurocognitive and psychiatric management of the 22q11.2 deletion syndrome].

INTRODUCTION: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is caused by hemizygous microdeletions on chromosome 22. 22q11.2DS has several presentations including Di George's syndrome, velo-cardio-facial syndrome or Shprintzen's syndrome and it is the most frequent microdeletion syndrome in the general population (prevalence estimated at 1/4000 births, de novo: 90%). The inheritance of the syndrome (10%) is autosomal dominant. Most people with 22q11.2DS are missing a sequence of about 3 million DNA building blocks (base pairs) on one copy of chromosome 22 in each cell. A small percentage of affect
