Traditional Gymnastic Exercises for the Pelvic Floor Often Lead to Bladder Neck Descent - a Study Using Perineal Ultrasound.

BACKGROUND: The aims of physiotherapy in stress incontinent women are to improve pelvic floor function and the continence mechanism including bladder neck support and urethral closure pressure. In Germany, traditional conservative treatment often includes gymnastic exercises with unclear effects on the bladder neck. The aim of this study was to sonographically assess bladder neck movements during selected exercises. METHODS: Fifteen healthy, continent women without previous vaginal births, who were able to voluntarily contract their pelvic floor muscels performed the shoulder bridge, the abdo

Dislocated Posterior Tibial Tendon Treated With Plate Buttress Fixation in a Collegiate Gymnast: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

UNLABELLED: Dislocation of the posterior tibial tendon (PTT) is a rare pathological process that occurs most often as a result of acute trauma. The injury involves forced dorsiflexion and eversion of the foot against a contracted posterior tibialis. Diagnosis of the injury is often difficult secondary to the rarity of the injury and its similarity with other benign injuries of the medial ankle. Routine diagnostic imaging often does not reveal the injury, and advanced imaging with magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis is often required. The injury can be a result of

Female patients with late-onset legg-calvé-perthes disease are frequently gymnasts: is there a mechanical etiology for this subset of patients?

BACKGROUND: The cause of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (LCPD) is unknown. We have observed a relatively high prevalence of female gymnasts presenting with LCPD. The purpose of this study was to determine: (1) the percentage of LCPD patients exposed to high-level gymnastics training, (2) the demographics of this subset of patients, and (3) their clinical outcomes. METHODS: Several adolescent female gymnasts presented to our clinic with recent-onset LCPD. We reviewed our cases to discern the prevalence and treatment of the disorder in this patient cohort. From 1999 to 2010, 572 patients were evalu…

Short stature and delayed puberty in gymnasts: influence of selection bias on leg length and the duration of training on trunk length.

BACKGROUND: Delays in bone age, the onset of puberty, and skeletal growth in gymnasts could be, in part, the reason for an interest in gymnastics, rather than being the result of vigorous exercise. We hypothesized that short stature and delayed bone age are present at the start of gymnastics, and training delays growth, producing short stature, even after retirement. METHODS: Sitting height and leg length were measured in 83 active female gymnasts, 42 retired gymnasts, and 154 healthy control subjects. Results were expressed as age-specific SD scores (mean +/- SEM). RESULTS: In the cross-sec…

Inter-limb asymmetry characteristics and their impact on bilateral jump performance in elite gymnasts: a comparison across varying mechanical loads.

This study investigated task-specific biomechanical regulation and the impact of inter-limb asymmetry on athletic performance in fourteen elite gymnasts. Participants (sex: 7 males, 7 females; age: 20.14 ± 1.23 years) performed bilateral and unilateral drop jump (DJ) and hopping tasks while kinetic data were collected via force plates to calculate vertical stiffness (Kvert), center of mass (COM) displacement, vertical ground reaction force (vGRF), and inter-limb asymmetry. Compared with hopping, the drop jump task exhibited lower Kvert and vGRF but greater COM displacement (all p < 0.001). COM

[Effect of antenatal gymnastics on childbirth: a study on 50 sedentary women in the Republic of Benin during the second and third quarters of pregnancy].

Antenatal gymnastics is a form of non-pharmacological childbirth preparation methods. It helps maintain rachidian statics and to relieve painful syndromes (joints, lumbar pains) during pregnancy. It also helps correct gravidic problems (leg cramps, back ache, weight increase, etc.). It is both a physical and psychological training method in accordance with the natural mechanisms of childbirth, implying personal involvement on the part of the parturient. Fifty (50) pregnant women of Benin (apart from pathological pregnancies) divided into two groups of 25 subjects (experimental group) and 25 su…

Postural control measured as the center of pressure excursion in young female gymnasts with low back pain or lower extremity injury.

Gymnasts are known to practice and compete although suffering from injuries and pain. Pain may change strategies for postural control. The primary aim of the present study was to investigate how center of pressure (COP) measurements are influenced by low back pain and lower extremity injury in top-level female gymnasts. A secondary aim was to study the reliability of these measurements using a test-retest design, and how this depends on the duration of the test. Fifty-seven top-level gymnasts were included in four groups: non-injured (NI, n=18), low back pain (LBP, n=11), lower extremity injur
