Primary immunodeficiency comprises a heterogeneous group of disorders. Autoimmune and/or rheumatic manifestations are not uncommon in these patients. It may be the first and/or sole sign before the underlying disease is established. This study focuses on the children of primary immunodeficiency with autoimmune disease to survey the clinical and laboratory finding retrospectively. From January 1985 to June 1998, ten patients (M:F = 9:1) of primary immunodeficiency with at least one well defined autoimmune disease were identified. The underlying immunodeficiency included three with Bruton's dise

Impairment of the immune system by drugs, such as azathioprine and cyclosporin, or by diseases, such as AIDS, represents the most firmly established cause of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Neither drugs nor diseases, however, can explain the increases in the incidence of NHL in the general population, for these include cohorts relatively unexposed to immunosuppressive drugs or to AIDS. Furthermore, no immunological disorder that is associated with an increased risk of NHL is known to have increased in incidence. Among alternative explanations is the possibility of increased exposure to a lympho

The authors present two cases of Cryptococcus neoformans disease in two young persons. Its appears, in the first case, a diffuse ganglionnary and cutaneous lesion with an evolutive meningo-encephalic localization, and in the second case it appears only a meningitic lesion. These two observations are characterized by the apparition of the infection in a immunodepression patient and by an unfavorable evolution in spite of the treatment.

Cryptosporidiae are ubiquitous protozoan belonging to the coccidiae family which parasite many wild and domestic animals bowels. Man gets infested by ingestion oocysts. The parasite complete cycle takes place on the surface of intestinal epithelial cells microvillosities. Human cases that we described occurred among patients presenting (or not) with acquired or congenital immunity depression. Diarrhea is the main symptom. Diagnosis is based on parasitological stool examination and pathological study of intestinal biopsies. At the present time no specific treatment is known and only the immunit

A 20-year-old male patient with a history of celiac disease came to medical attention after developing profound fatigue and pancytopenia. Evaluation demonstrated pan-hypogammaglobulinemia. There was no history of significant clinical infections. Bone marrow biopsy confirmed hypocellular marrow consistent with aplastic anemia. Oncologic and hematologic evaluations were unremarkable for iron deficiency, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, myelodysplastic syndromes, T-cell clonality, and leukemia. A next generation genetic sequencing immunodeficiency panel revealed a heterozygous variant of unce

The Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is a primary immunodeficiency and is inherited in an X-linked pattern. Affected patients have mutations in the gene encoding Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome protein (WASP), a key regulator of signaling and reorganization of the cytoskeleton in hematopoietic cells. Mutations in WASP gene lead to a wide clinical spectrum ranging from thrombocytopenia, immunodeficiency, eczema and high susceptibility to tumor development and manifestations such as skin infections, suppurative otitis and pneumonia. Clinical symptoms start around the age of 6 months. Incidence of this di

Mutations in MECP2 cause Rett syndrome, a severe neurological disorder with autism-like features. Duplication of MECP2 also causes severe neuropathology. Both diseases display immunological abnormalities that suggest a role for MECP2 in controlling immune and inflammatory responses. Here, we used mecp2-null zebrafish to study the potential function of Mecp2 as an immunological regulator. Mecp2 deficiency resulted in an increase in neutrophil infiltration and upregulated expression of the pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines Il1b and Il10 as a secondary response to disturbances in tissue homeos

After presenting the case of a male patient who was diagnosed as suffering from the Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome at the age of 4 months, we review the main clinical (infections, bleeding and eczema), immunological (deficiency of IgM, normal IgG, elevated IgA and IgE, deficiency of total T lymphocytes, normal T4 levels, decreased levels of T8, diminished response to phytohemagglutinin and partial depletion of the lymphocyte population in biopsies of lymph nodes and spleen) and haematological (thrombocytopenia, dysmegakaryocytosis, decreased half-life and decreased granulation in the protoplasm of m

The requirements for a present-day IVIG preparation are outlined. These are mainly: fully preserved activities of the recognition and effector functions of the IgG molecule, a normal subclass distribution, and a normal half-life after infusion. The therapeutic uses of IVIG preparations are discussed as follows: Antibody substitution in cases of generalized or partial antibody deficiency in immune-compromised patients. These include the following diseases: hypogammaglobulinemia (congenital and acquired, including the neonates); drug-induced and viral immunosuppression. Antibody substitution in

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Human natural killer cell deficiencies are a relevant clinical entity that provides insight into the role of natural killer cells in host defense, as well as the basic biology of natural killer cells. Since previously reviewing these disorders, significant developments warrant their reconsideration.
RECENT FINDINGS: Human natural killer cell deficiencies can occur as part of a more pervasive immunodeficiency syndrome or, rarely, in isolation. The most informative examples of the former are in the context of a known genetic defect, because the deficiency of natural killer ce

The strong relationship between the pineal gland and the immune system continues to establish itself more and more. In situations of a pinealectomy or in those of inhibition of the production of melatonin, a state of immunosuppression is produced which disappears when the patient receives this hormone. Likewise, melatonin counteracts the negative effects that immunosuppressive drug treatment produce over the immunity. It is due to these facts that one postulates the possibility of utilizing melatonin in primary and secondary immunodeficiency states as well as in cancerous immunotherapy. The ac

The etiology of keratoconus is still unclear. This study presents a new clinical sign, Thalasselis' syndrome, defined as: an association between keratoconus, magnesium deficiency, type-A behavior and allergy. Also, it introduces the hypothesis that magnesium deficiency could affect pathologically the osmotic mechanism of the cornea, specifically the Na-K and/or Ca-ATPase pumps; the collagen structure by alteration of the adenylate cyclase activity; and other mechanisms as well. Furthermore, we propose the Thalasselis' syndrome is compatible with previous theories on keratoconus. In addition to

Common Variable Immuno-Deficiency (CVID) is the most common symptomatic primary antibody-deficiency syndrome, but the basic immunologic defects underlying this syndrome are not well defined. We report here that among eight patients studied (six CVID and two hypogammaglobulinemic patients with recurrent infections), there is in two CVID patients a dramatic reduction in Ig V gene somatic hypermutation with 40-75% of IgG transcripts totally devoid of mutations in the circulating memory B cell compartment. Functional assays of the T cell compartment point to an intrinsic B cell defect in the proce

A 30-year-old homosexual man presented with widespread Burkitt's lymphoma. On the basis of immunologic and viral studies, he was suspected of having the acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Following chemotherapy that included intrathecal cytosine arabinoside and methotrexate, brain stem edema, paraplegia, and an elevated cerebrospinal fluid level of myelin basic protein developed. Autopsy revealed vacuolar demyelination of spinal cord, brain stem, and cerebellum. The pathologic findings were similar to those reported to occur in myelopathy associated with intrathecal chemotherapy, but far mor
