Modified Use of Costal Cartilage in Asians for the Correction of Nostril Asymmetry in Unilateral Secondary Cleft Lip Nasal Deformity.

BACKGROUND: Weak alar cartilage and lack of soft tissue on the cleft side are considered to be the main critical factors leading to the asymmetry of bilateral nostrils. The costal cartilage can provide strong structural support and can be used to maintain long-term stability of nostril shape after surgical correction. With the advancement in rhinoplasty techniques, the application and understanding of costal cartilage in cleft lip nasal deformity is still on going. Herein, we present our technique of applying costal cartilage to provide nostril support and correct asymmetry in Asian patients w

The role of endosseous implants in the management of alveolar clefts.

In individuals with cleft lip and palate, there is a high prevalence of hypodontia, particularly of the maxillary lateral incisor on the cleft side. The edentulous space in patients with a repaired alveolar cleft was traditionally treated with a fixed or removable partial denture, but this approach is not optimal. The purpose of this paper was to review the dental literature for infant orthopedic treatment, timing of alveolar bone grafting, timing of implant placement, and type of implants used in individuals with repaired alveolar clefts. There seems to be a consensus in the literature that t

Identifying Predictors of Acquired Velopharyngeal Insufficiency in Cleft Lip and Palate Following Maxillary Osteotomy Using Multiple Regression Analyses.

BACKGROUND: Maxillary osteotomy is typically undertaken to correct abnormal facial growth in cleft lip and palate. The surgery can cause velopharyngeal insufficiency resulting in hypernasality. This study aims to identify valid predictors of acquired velopharyngeal insufficiency following maxillary osteotomy by using a range of perceptual and instrumental speech investigations and multiple regression. METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken consisting of a consecutive series of patients with cleft lip and palate (N = 20) undergoing maxillary osteotomy by a single surgeon. Participants wer

Virtual Reality Augmented Feedback Rehabilitation Associated to Action Observation Therapy in Buccofacial Apraxia: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Buccofacial Apraxia is defined as the inability to perform voluntary movements of the larynx, pharynx, mandible, tongue, lips and cheeks, while automatic or reflexive control of these structures is preserved. Buccofacial Apraxia frequently co-occurs with aphasia and apraxia of speech and it has been reported as almost exclusively resulting from a lesion of the left hemisphere. Recent studies have demonstrated the benefit of treating apraxia using motor training principles such as Augmented Feedback or Action Observation Therapy. In light of this, the study describes the treatment b

[Histopathological evaluation of the evolution of oral mucosa grafts used for augmentation urethroplasty].

INTRODUCTION: The clinical efficiency of oral mucosa grafts used for augmentation urethroplasty has been proven. However, a small number of studies in literature are dedicated to the determination of pathologic changes in grafts during the engraftment in the urethra. AIM: to assess the histopathologic evolution of oral mucosa graft used for augmentation urethroplasty. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 15 patients aged 19-67 years with penile and combined penile/bulbar urethral strictures of length 3.5-11 cm were undergone to two-staged urethroplasty by Asopa technique. In 9 cases the patholog

Augmentation in two stages of atrophic alveolar bone prior to dental rehabilitation: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this report is to describe a significantly deficient case of alveolar bone that was managed by alveolar bone augmentation using a technique of distraction osteogensis and onlay bone grafting prior to dental implant placement. BACKGROUND: Injury to the teeth and alveolar ridge of the maxillary anterior region can cause a severe alveolar ridge deficiency resulting in ridge atrophy and maxillary retrognathism. The loss of these teeth and alveolar bone together with fibrotic scar formation can result in adverse changes of the interarch space, occlusal plane, arch relationship, and

The rheology of injectable hyaluronic acid hydrogels used as facial fillers: A review.

Injectable hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels have been popularized in facial aesthetics as they provide a long-lasting effect, low risk of complications, allergenicity tests are not required before application and can be easily removed by the action of hyaluronidases. On the other hand, the development of these systems requires in-depth studies of chemical mechanisms involved in hydrogel formation. Ideal dermal fillers should temporarily fluidize during extrusion through the needle and quickly recover their original shape after application. Hydrogels with more elastic properties, for example, are

Implant placement with inferior alveolar nerve repositioning in the posterior mandible.

This case report presents inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) repositioning as a viable approach for implant placement in the mandibular molar region, where challenges of severe alveolar bone width and height deficiencies can exist. Two patients requiring implant placement in the right mandibular molar region underwent nerve transposition and lateralization. In both cases, inadequate alveolar bone height above the IAN precluded the use of short implants. The first patient exhibited an overall low alveolar ridge from the anterior to posterior regions, with a complex relationship with adjacent implant

The 10th Costal Cartilage Graft in Secondary Cleft Rhinoplasty-A Versatile Rib.

Autologous costal cartilage for rhinoplasty is an excellent graft material providing both volume and quality of cartilage required for nasal reconstruction. Commonly, the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th rib costal cartilages have been harvested but other ribs such as the 10th rib are often overlooked and yet offer an excellent graft option for columellar, alar rim, nasal tip, and dorsal augmentation grafts. The use of the 10th rib costal cartilage in patients with complex secondary cleft nasal deformity has scant reference in the literature. We demonstrate our simple and quick 10th rib cartilage harves

Wire scalpel for surgical correction of soft tissue contour defects by subcutaneous dissection.

BACKGROUND: Increasing demand exists for cosmetic correction of soft tissue contour defects. Treatments include simple tissue augmentation techniques or more complex surgeries with consequent relevant recuperation time for the patient. The search for new simple techniques to correct scars and age-related wrinkles and folds is therefore one of the main goals of cosmetic dermatologic surgery. OBJECTIVE: To improve the cosmetic outcome of patients suffering from soft tissue contour defects by the use of a novel surgical instrument and technique, subcutaneous dissection by wire scalpel. METHODS:

Autoimmune/Inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Hyaluronic Acid and Hyaluronidase.

Skin aging is a biological and chronological process characterized by progressive alterations in the extracellular matrix, including reduced hyaluronic acid (HA) content. HA dermal fillers are widely used for cosmetic purposes and are generally considered safe; however, immune-mediated complications, including autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA), have been increasingly reported. We report the case of a 35-year-old White woman who underwent cosmetic lip augmentation with HA and subsequently developed multisystem manifestations consistent with ASIA. Due to persistent loc

Anti-Parkinson's activity of Phragmites communis Trin. rhizomes and their liposomal formulation: Insights from chemical and molecular docking analyses.

Parkinson's disease (PD) arises primarily from the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the brain, yet current therapeutic options remain inadequate for fully overcoming the disease or halting its progression. This critical unmet need has spurred significant research into natural products as promising neuroprotective agents. In this context, our study represents the first exploration of the in vivo anti-Parkinson's potential of Phragmites communis Trin. (Common reed; family Poaceae) and its novel liposomal formulation. We demonstrated that both the total methanolic extract of P.
