In 200 patients with neuromuscular diseases the author studied malonic dehydrogenase and lactic dehydrogenase activity comparing it with the activity of serum creatine kinase and aldolase. New dissymmetric and asymmetric p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene derivatives were prepared as a result of the reaction of p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene with diethyl bromomalonate in the presence of different alkali metals (Cs, K and Na) in refluxing acetone for 7 days. An efficient enantioselective organocatalytic method for the synthesis of N-alkylated indoles with α-branched alkyl substituents from the corresponding unsaturated indolyl ketones via a Michael addition has been developed. The first method is chiral auxiliary-based and utilizes aldol reactions of N-acetyl thiazolidinethiones followed by a malonate displacement/decarboxylation reaction. The second approach uses the asymmetric catalytic Mukaiyama additions of dienolate nucleophile equivalents developed by Carreira and Sato. Finally, tin-substituted intermediates, prepared by either of these routes, can serve as advanced general precursors of kavalactone derivatives via Pd(0)-catalyzed Stille couplings with aryl halides.

Riboflavin-deficient rats are used to study the metabolism of deuterium-labeled nonanoic acids under conditions mimicking the human disorder of multiple acyl-CoA dehydrogenase deficiency in which large amounts of ethyl-malonic, glutaric, adipic, suberic, 4-octenedioic, sebacic and 4-decenedioic acids are excreted. Both control and deficient rats convert the nonanoic acids to labeled azelaic and pimelic acids. The labeling pattern in pimelic acid is consistent with the omega-oxidation of nonanoic acids to azelaic acid followed by beta-oxidation to pimelic acid.

BACKGROUND: Aging is a main risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Gallic acid (GA) is a phenolic compound derived from a wide range of fruits. GA has a wide spectrum of pharmacological properties, including anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective effects. This research was conducted to determine the cardioprotective effect of GA on cardiac hypertrophy in aged rats.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Following histological evaluation and through observing the heart, we found that GA improved the cardiac hypertrophy induced by D-galactose (D-GAL) in cardiac cells.

PURPOSE: We present our experience using the various Mitrofanoff techniques to create a continent catheterizable stoma as an adjunct to continent urinary tract reconstruction in children and young adults.

UNLABELLED: A new case of mitochondrial malonyl coenzyme A decarboxylase deficiency is described. The patient presented with an initial episode of metabolic acidosis, seizures, hypoglycemia, and cardiac failure at 2 months of age which slowly resolved. Subsequent evaluations at 4 years of age for developmental delay revealed a prominent elevation of malonic acid in urine. Malonyl carnitine was also elevated.
