The incidence and treatment of prehospital motion sickness.

OBJECTIVES: The authors' objectives were: 1) to determine the incidence of motion sickness during ambulance transport on a mountainous route in healthy volunteers, and 2) to determine if droperidol alleviated the signs and symptoms of motion sickness in those volunteers who developed it. METHODS: This was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Subjects were healthy volunteers over age 18 and not currently taking an antiemetic. Participants were transported in the back of an ambulance over a mountainous road. Those who developed motion sickness rated their nausea on…

On the origin of interindividual susceptibility to motion sickness.

According to the otolith asymmetry hypothesis for susceptibility to motion sickness, the interlabyrinthine asymmetry in the otoconial mass, which is normally compensated in the circuity of the vestibular system by appropriate neuronal weighting, becomes disrupted as a result of unfamiliar movement patterns or force environments. Measurements in various species have demonstrated a large scatter in the otoconial mass. As the utricle and saccule have distinct functions in the vestibular system it seems appropriate to deal with these organs separately. Results are presented on mass distribution an…

The significance of motion sickness in the vestibular system.

In order to clarify the significance of motion sickness in the vestibular system, we compared the findings of experimental motion sickness between different kinds of subjects, some of which were already reported. Subjects were healthy adults, healthy children between the ages of 4 and 15 years, and patients with congenital and acquired labyrinthine loss. They were asked to walk while wearing horizontally and vertically reversing goggles. Equilibrium ataxia as well as motion sickness were evoked by horizontal reversal, but not by vertical reversal in healthy subjects. Kindergarten children exhi…

The effectiveness of a motion sickness counselling programme.

Unselected volunteers were offered a course of instruction in using the cognitive-behavioural approach to helping individuals tolerate the deleterious effects of different motion environments. In order to evaluate that programme, 11 of the participants volunteered to counsel independently individuals who were prone to motion sickness, using cognitive-behavioural training which included reinforcement by visually induced apparent motion. The subjects were pre- and post-tested by an independent observer using tolerance and motion response as the dependent variables. These test scores were compare…

Neuropharmacology of motion sickness and emesis. A review.

Histamine H1-receptors are involved in the development of the symptoms and signs of motion sickness, including emesis. On provocative motion stimulus, a signal for sensory conflict activates the histaminergic neuron system, and the histaminergic descending impulse stimulates H1-receptors in the emetic center of the brain stem. The histaminergic input to the emetic center through H1-receptors is independent of dopamine D2-receptors in the chemoreceptor trigger zone and serotonin 5HT3-receptors in the visceral afferent, which are also involved in the emetic reflex. Antihistamines block emetic H1…

The susceptibility of rhesus monkeys to motion sickness.

The susceptibility of rhesus monkeys to motion sickness was investigated using test conditions that are provocative for eliciting motion sickness in squirrel monkeys. Ten male rhesus monkeys and ten male Bolivian squirrel monkeys were rotated in the vertical axis at 150 degrees/s for a maximum duration of 45 min. Each animal was tested in two conditions, continuous rotation and intermittent rotation. None of the rhesus monkeys vomited during the motion tests but all of the squirrel monkeys did. Differences were observed between the species in the amount of activity that occurred during motion …

Electrodermal activity as an index of motion sickness.

Sweating in the absence of thermal stimulation is one of the cardinal symptoms of motion sickness. But since sweating is closely related to electrodermal activity this may be a potentially useful index of the intensity of motion sickness. In order to evaluate this possibility, the correlations between electrodermal activity and a range of signs and symptoms of motion sickness were examined in four experiments, in which a total of 170 subjects were exposed to a cross-coupled force environment. Although increases in skin conductance did not correlate with specific single indices of motion sickne…

Vision therapy as a treatment for motion sickness.

A case of visually-induced motion sickness (VIMS) is presented. The patient underwent a program of dynamic adaptive vision therapy which relieved her symptoms of motion sickness. Symptoms of VIMS may include photophobia, an inability to read in a moving auto, and nausea, dizziness, headache, eye strain and anxiety following provocative visual stimuli. The neural mismatch theory is discussed.

Biosensors and Biomarkers for the Detection of Motion Sickness.

Motion sickness (MS) is a prevalent syndrome that predominantly occurs during transportation and virtual reality (VR). The absence of reliable indicators and detection methods makes precise diagnosis difficult. Biomarker concentrations and trends may imply individual susceptibility, symptom classification, and the specific progression of MS. It is therefore essential to explore biosensors capable of providing sensitive, accurate, and real-time monitoring of biomarkers. This review provides a summary of the pathogenesis and biological pathways underlying MS, followed by an examination of biomar…

Is there a relationship between odors and motion sickness?

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between olfaction and motion sickness. A sample of 18 participants was recruited and submitted to three sessions of nauseogenic stimulations: off vertical axis rotation (OVAR), performed under conditions of olfactory stimulation with limonene (pleasant odor), petrol (unpleasant odor) or distilled water (as a control). Motion sickness was assessed before, during and after each OVAR session. In addition, participants were asked to evaluate the intensity and hedonic valence of four odors (geraniol, limonene, butanol, petrol) as well as distil…

Neuronal mechanisms and the treatment of motion sickness.

The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the physiological basis, clinical picture and treatment options for motion sickness. Motion sickness is a well-known nausea and vomiting syndrome in otherwise healthy people. The physical signs of motion sickness occur in both humans and animals during travel by sea, automobile or airplane and in space. Furthermore, some other special situations, such as simulators, the cinema and video games, have been described as causing pseudomotion sickness. Children between 2 and 12 years old are most susceptible to motion sickness, and women are more f…

Prevalence and correlates of susceptibility to motion sickness.

Data on susceptibility to motion sickness were collected on a sample of 535 individuals divided into eight groups. The prevalence of motion sickness among Tibetans and Northeast Indians (28%) was slightly higher than Northwest Indians (26%). Generally speaking, females (27.3%) were more susceptible than males (16.8%). Among different groups, the highest incidence of susceptibility to motion sickness (SMS) was recorded in schizophrenic patients (30%), while the lowest in rowers (zero percent). Ears and eyes are the most potent receptors of provocative motion that causes sickness. Individuals wi…
