An intraocular lens (IOL) replaces the natural crystalline lens during cataract surgery, and although the vast majority of implants have simple optics, "advanced technology" IOLs have multifocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) properties. Optical concepts are evaluated here, with image contrast, focal range, and unwanted visual phenomena being the primary concerns. Visual phenomena with earlier bifocal diffractive lenses led to alternative diffractive designs (trifocals, etc.) and also to exploring increasing the depth of focus for monofocal IOLs using refractive methods, where although the

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a common delayed complication of cataract surgery, particularly in younger patients and those receiving multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). Intraoperative posterior capsulorhexis has been proposed as a preventive technique, but its use in adult cataracts is less documented. A 27-year-old patient presented with bilateral congenital posterior subcapsular cataracts, high myopia, and astigmatism. Comprehensive preoperative examination, including visual function and retinal imaging, was performed. The patient underwent phacoemulsification with toric multif

The assessment of patient satisfaction following cataract surgery is heavily reliant on the evaluation of visual quality, specifically after the placement of diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (MIOLs) under varying pupil conditions. The objective of this study was to examine the visual and optical clarity following cataract phacoemulsification and the use of Tecnis ZMB00 MIOL for implantation. The study involved 116 individuals (135 eyes) who received cataract phacoemulsification and underwent Tecnis ZMB00 MIOL implantation. Assessments were conducted 1 week and 3 months after the surge

Background/Objectives: Diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) are widely used following cataract surgery, but their impact on peripheral retinal image quality in ultra-widefield (UWF) fundus imaging has not been objectively characterized. This study aimed to quantify peripheral image sharpness in UWF fundus photographs and assess wavelength-specific differences between diffractive multifocal and enhanced monofocal IOLs. Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, 65 eyes from 51 patients implanted with enhanced monofocal (Tecnis Eyhance; n = 32) or diffractive multifocal IOLs (Tecni

Toric intraocular lenses (IOLs) are universally recommended in cataract cases with preoperative corneal astigmatism ≥1.5 D. An optimal surgical outcome depends on careful patient selection, complete preoperative evaluation, accurate IOL power calculation, precise marking of the axis, meticulous intraoperative approach, and methodical postoperative care. Understanding the importance of posterior corneal astigmatism, surgically induced astigmatism, and effective lens position in IOL power calculation and newer techniques to measure them directly have resulted in better postoperative refractive o

In the attempt to manage presbyopia, different intraocular lens designs have been proposed such as monofocal IOLs with monovision or multifocal IOLs. Even though the lenses mentioned offer satisfactory visual results, contemporary ophthalmology has not completely answered the presbyopic dilemma by simulating the accommodative properties of the crystalline lens itself. Accommodative IOLs were designed to fill this gap and provide satisfactory vision for all distances by restoring some degree of "pseudoaccommodation." Pseudo accommodative capability can be linked to monofocal IOL's as well but t
