Forward Brillouin scattering in non-suspended lithium niobate waveguides at visible wavelengths.

Thin-film lithium niobate on sapphire provides an excellent platform for simultaneously confining acoustic and optical modes without suspended structures, enabling efficient acousto-optic modulation through strong piezoelectric coupling. Here, we identify the challenges in realizing the forward Brillouin interaction at visible wavelengths and overcome the limitation by introducing a quasi-phase-matching scheme through periodic waveguide width modulation. We predict a 69.9% inter-modal optical conversion efficiency over 0.36 mm using only 5 mW acoustic power. Our study paves the way for high-pe

Multi-wavelength optical sensor for jaundice detection via absorbance difference spectroscopy.

We demonstrate a low-cost optical sensor for neonatal jaundice detection using 470 nm (bilirubin-sensitive) and 560 nm (hemoglobin isosbestic) LEDs. The system applies absorbance difference spectroscopy to isolate bilirubin signals in skin-mimicking phantoms, achieving 387mV/mg⋅dL-1 sensitivity and 13.5% error versus spectrophotometry. Optical characterization confirms 470 nm penetration depth (≈0.65mm) in neonatal dermis. A machine learning classifier predicts risk severity with 99.5% accuracy. Comparative analysis shows a superior cost-performance trade-off versus reflectance-based devices.

Sonochemistry-assisted microwave synthesis and optical study of single-crystalline CdS nanoflowers.

Well-defined flower-like CdS nanostructures have been synthesized by applying ultrasound and microwave simultaneously, which consist of hexagonal nanopyramids and/or nanoplates depending on different sulfur sources. It is shown that the synergistic effect of microwave and sonochemistry is the main mechanism for the formation of the nanoflowers. Optical characterization of the nanoflowers shows a large blue-shift up to 100 nm in comparing with simple low-dimensional CdS nanostructures. This structure induced shift in optical properties may have potential applications in optoelectronics devices,

Multi-dimensional reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer for WDM-MDM systems.

In the rapidly evolving fields of optical networks, the demands for increased flexibility and capacity are ever-growing, especially in the context of ultra-large data centers. To meet these demands, we propose and demonstrate a versatile multi-channel reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) that utilizes a crossbar optical switching network. The proposed ROADM is compatible with both wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and mode-division multiplexing (MDM) systems. Unlike traditional ROADM devices for WDM-MDM systems, our innovation allows for simultaneous reconfiguration of both

Optical coherence tomography for elucidation of flow-diversion phenomena: The concept of endothelized mural thrombus behind reversible in-stent stenosis in flow-diverters.

PURPOSE: Flow-diverters have revolutionized the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms, offering a durable solution to aneurysms with high recurrence rates after conventional stent-assisted coiling. Events that occur after treatment with flow-diversion, such as in-stent stenosis (ISS) are not well understood and require further assessment. After assessing an animal model with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), we propose a concept that could explain the mechanism causing reversible ISS after treatment of intracranial aneurysms with flow-diverters. METHODS: Six Pipeline Flex emboliz

All-Optical Control of Bidirectional Polarization Switching in Ferroelectric Heterostructures for Neuromorphic and In-Memory Computing.

All-optical in-memory computing is emerging as a critical technology for next-generation energy-efficient and high-speed information processing because it avoids frequent optical-electrical-optical conversions and integrates sensing, processing, and memory within a single device. Here, we report the demonstration of bidirectional polarization switching in a van der Waals heterostructure composed of ferroelectric CuInP2S6 (CIPS) and semiconducting MoS2. Wavelength-tunable excitation (660-405 nm) enables robust, bidirectional polarization reversal through the interaction between the photogenerat

Devic's neuromyelitis optica in an infant case.

Devic's neuromyelitis optica was orginally described as an acute severe monophasic syndrome characterised by myelitis and optic neuritis. The mean age at onset was reported to be around 40 years, with a wide range. However, Devic's neuromyelitis optica has also been seen in children. Prognosis of the syndrome was poor, and no satisfactory treatment was known. This article reports a 23-month-old boy with acute myelitis and optic neuritis who was diagnosed with Devic's neuromyelitis optica. The response of the patient to therapy was poor, and he developed severe sequelae.

Invasive fractional flow reserve: Which technology is best?

Invasive pressure measurements using hyperemic fractional flow reserve (FFR) and nonhyperemic pressure measurements (NHPR) are superior to angiography alone for assessment of 50-90% stenoses. FFR devices using piezoelectric and optical sensors achieve 94% concordance in FFR values; microcatheter designs have more lesion-crossing failures and less pressure drift compared with guidewire designs. Despite the similarity in statistical performance among FFR devices, interventional cardiologists may prefer to use NHPR to avoid the need for adenosine-related side effects, variations in vasodilator re

Molecularly Engineered Ultralow-Loss Soft Polymers for Deformable Printed Photonics.

Achieving ultralow optical loss, broadband transparency, and mechanical softness within a single polymer network remains a long-standing challenge for soft photonics. Here, we report a molecularly engineered class of UV-curable thiol-ene-aromatic polymers that reconciles optical performance with mechanical compliance. By combining thiol crosslinkers with aromatic acrylates to form a low-absorption network and introducing a phenyl-bearing comonomer to mitigate near-infrared vibrational overtone absorption while tuning elasticity and printability, the optimized A50 formulation exhibits ultralow

Thermal Endurance of Suspended Thin-Film Lithium Niobate up to 800 ∘C.

The need for high-temperature piezoelectric microelectromechanical systems (MEMSs) requires pushing piezoelectric platforms to their thermal limits. In harsh thermal environments, piezoelectric MEMS devices are expected to sustain severe damage because of material degradation and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatches between the functional layers and the carrier wafer. This article investigates the thermal endurance of the suspended thin-film lithium niobate (LN) platform by observing the structural integrity and performance of acoustic Lamb wave resonators after annealing rounds a

Study on the luminous performance of the same LED chip packaged into different specifications of high-power-density devices.

Currently, single high-power-density LED devices can operate stably at several hundred watts, making them a key research focus and enabling widespread application in the industry. To manufacture these devices, multiple chips are closely packed and integrated into packages of various sizes and power ratings for operation across different power levels. High-wattage, high-power-density LED devices operate at hundreds of watts and currents approaching one hundred amperes. Therefore, addressing the research gap in the luminous performance variation of identical LED chips packaged into different dev
