An AuNF-modified optical fiber LSPR biosensor for sensitive and wide-range 5-HT detection.

Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is a critical biomarker for carcinoid tumor diagnosis, yet its precise quantification in clinical settings remains challenging. Herein, we develop a high-performance optical fiber localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) biosensor functionalized with in situ grown gold nanoflowers (AuNFs). The hierarchical branched architecture of AuNFs concentrates electromagnetic fields into dense nanoscale "hotspots", delivering a ∼2.2-fold signal amplification compared to spherical AuNPs. Integrated with a specific 5-HT aptamer, the sensor achieves a wide linear rang

Fully Fiber-Integrated 3D-Printed Probes for Plug-and-Play Endoscopic Optical Coherence Tomography.

Miniature probes extend optical coherence tomography (OCT) into lumens and other confined spaces, but conventional implementations often rely on multiple distal components, fiber processing, and probe-specific interferometer matching. Here, a fully fiber-integrated OCT (F2I-OCT) architecture is demonstrated in which two-photon microfabrication defines not only the terminal imaging optic, but the complete distal optical and interferometric architecture within a single fiber-mounted element. Beam expansion, side-view redirection, common-path reference generation, and terminal imaging are physica

Nanomaterial-Enabled Fiber-Optic SPR Biosensor for Continuous and Noninvasive Body Fluid Monitoring:Progress and Prospects.

Continuous and noninvasive body fluid monitoring has attracted increasing attention in personalized healthcare, chronic disease management, and wearable point-of-care testing. Fiber-optic surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors are particularly promising for this purpose because they combine label-free and real-time with miniaturization and low sample volume requirements. However, current body fluid sensing technologies and conventional bare metal SPR interfaces still face critical challenges, including insufficient analytical accuracy in complex biofluids, broad resonance linewidths, weak

Deterministic wet etching of aspheric fiber microlenses with tunable conic geometry for tailored optical functionality.

Efficient coupling between guided optical fiber modes and radiated fields in the surrounding medium remains a fundamental limitation across photonics, sensing, and biophotonics. Micro-lensed fibers offer a promising solution, yet scalable fabrication with predictable geometry and deterministic optical performance has remained elusive. Here, we introduce laser-controlled wet-chemical etching (LCWCE), a single-parameter strategy that directly sculpts micro-lenses, from hyperbolic to parabolic and prolate elliptical profiles, on standard optical fibers. Local laser illumination establishes an axi

M3-RGB: An Imaging Sensor System Using Multicore, Multimode Optical Fiber and Neural Networks.

Conventional image acquisition requires an electrically powered image sensor to be placed directly behind the camera lens, constraining camera placement. To overcome this issue, we introduce M3-RGB as an incoherent-light fiber imaging system in which a multicore, multimode optical fiber passively relays lens images to a remotely located image sensor. Unlike conventional approaches, M3-RGB is designed to operate directly on incoherent light and requires no electrical power or active components at the sensing interface. Because propagation through the fiber yields spatially scrambled patterns, a

Gold nanorod vacancy-filling based optical fiber sensor for sensitive folic acid detection.

Folic acid is an essential micronutrient for human growth, and either its excess or deficiency can provoke adverse physiological effects. Therefore, the development of a rapid and highly sensitive detection platform for folic acid is of substantial practical importance. In this study, a D-shaped optical fiber sensor is functionalized with a folate receptor protein to capture target analytes through specific ligand-receptor interactions. Vacant binding sites are subsequently occupied by functionalized gold nanorods for amplifying the fiber's surface plasmon resonance (SPR) response. The incorpo

Micro-gas optical-fiber detection based on metal-organic framework films by photocurable deposition.

Effective detection of dissolved acetylene is critical for diagnosing early faults in oil-immersed power transformers; however, achieving a synergy between high sensitivity and mechanical robustness presents a significant challenge in sensor design. We developed a photocurable composite film comprising copper-based benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (HKUST-1) and butyl methacrylate (BMA) via ultraviolet crosslinking. HKUST-1 possesses a three-dimensional interconnected pore structure with uniform-sized nanocage windows (0.69-1.08 nm). The high density of Cu2+ sites enables rapid acetylene capture, a

Regenerable PVA Hydrogel-Functionalized Optical Fiber Sensor for Ultra-Trace Detection of Berberine Hydrochloride.

Most conventional methods for detecting pharmaceutical residues are limited by high operational cost, insufficient selectivity, or the requirement for harsh chemical regeneration that may damage sensing materials. In this study, a double-gourd-shaped Mach-Zehnder interferometric optical fiber sensor functionalized with a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel layer was developed for the sensitive and reusable detection of berberine hydrochloride (BBH) in aqueous media. The hydroxyl-rich hydrogel layer enables reversible BBH adsorption and induces wavelength shifts through local refractive-index (R

PRDX1 as a novel urinary biomarker for bladder cancer: Development of an integrated fiber optic sensing platform.

In this study, integrated proteomic and transcriptomic analyses identified peroxiredoxin 1 (PRDX1) as a novel urinary biomarker for bladder cancer (BC). PRDX1 was significantly upregulated in BC tissues and was associated with poorer overall survival. In vitro experiments further demonstrated that PRDX1 promotes malignant phenotypes of BC cells, including proliferation, migration, and invasion. Silencing PRDX1 in BC cells significantly reduced the invasiveness and proliferation ability. To address the clinical need for rapid and non-invasive detection, we developed an innovative optical fiber b

Characterization of spectrally-temporally multiplexed optical amplification of ultrafast laser pulses in few-mode fiber.

Few-mode fiber amplifiers have garnered significant attention for their applications in spatial division multiplexing (SDM) communication systems and ultrafast fiber lasers, as spatial modes provide additional degrees of freedom. While previous studies have predominantly focused on amplifying continuous-wave (CW) or quasi-CW signals in a single transverse mode, the amplification of ultrafast laser pulses with much higher peak power and broader spectral width in few-mode fiber remains largely unexplored, in which the involved fruitful spectrally-temporally nonlinear interplay can result in comp

A Flexible Wearable Data Glove Based on Hybrid Fiber-Optic Sensing for Hand Motion Monitoring.

Wearable data gloves often suffer from electromagnetic interference, insufficient substrate stability, and limited capability for multi-degree-of-freedom motion measurement. To address these limitations, a flexible glove incorporating a hybrid POF-FBG sensing scheme was designed and fabricated. Plastic optical fibers (POFs) were side-polished and patterned with long-period gratings to improve sensitivity to wrist flexion-extension and abduction-adduction. Then fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) were embedded in a polydimethylsiloxane substrate and encapsulated using thermoplastic polyurethane fixture

[Study on the Application of Optical Fiber Light Transmission Method in the Removal of Soft Tissue Foreign Bodies].

To address the current challenges of difficult removal and potential residuals of soft tissue foreign bodies, this paper utilizes the principle of different light reflection degrees between foreign bodies and tissues to construct a foreign body localization device based on modified PMMA optical fibers. An optical fiber light transmission method is designed for the localization of soft tissue foreign bodies. To verify the practicality and reliability of the device, tests and comparisons are conducted on biological tissue models. The results show that the device can locate foreign bodies more ef

Fiber-optic bolometers with high-temperature tolerance and reduced time constants for fusion plasma diagnostics.

Fiber-optic bolometers (FOBs) designed for plasma radiation measurement in magnetically confined fusion environments have been previously developed and tested at the DIII-D tokamak. These FOBs utilize a silicon Fabry-Perot interferometer at the fiber tip for temperature measurement and a gold disk as a radiation absorber. This paper presents recent advancements in the development of FOBs with reduced cooling time constants and enhanced temperature tolerance. We also demonstrate high-temperature operation and report findings from irradiation tests. By incorporating a copper sensor holder as a t

Wearable fiber-free optical sensor for continuous monitoring of neonatal cerebral blood flow and oxygenation.

BACKGROUND: Unstable cerebral hemodynamics places preterm infants at high risk of brain injury. We adapted an innovative, fiber-free, wearable diffuse speckle contrast flow-oximetry (DSCFO) device for continuous monitoring of both cerebral blood flow (CBF) and oxygenation in neonatal piglets and preterm infants. METHODS: DSCFO uses two small laser diodes as focused-point and a tiny CMOS camera as a high-density two-dimensional detector to detect spontaneous spatial fluctuation of diffuse laser speckles for CBF measurement, and light intensity attenuations for cerebral oxygenation measurement.

Epidural pressure measurement using a fiber-optic sensor (proof-of-principle in vivo animal trial).

BACKGROUND: An increase in epidural pressure around the stenosis has been observed in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) with positive signs of sedimentation or redundant nerve roots. Further analysis of the pressure conditions in the stenotic area would be of great interest. We hypothesized that it would be possible to determine the physiological parameters of the epidural pulse wave and its course in pathological stenosis as a basis for objective identification of LSS based on pressure using a new measuring method with continuous spatial and temporal resolution. METHODS: We performe

Optic Fiber Microsensor Reveals Specific Spatiotemporal Oxygen Uptake Profiles at the Mammalian Ocular Surface.

Oxygen (O2) uptake by cells and tissues is a critical indicator of metabolic demand, changes in microenvironment, and pathophysiology. O2 uptake from the atmosphere accounts for virtually all the O2 consumption in the avascular cornea; however, a detailed spatiotemporal profile of corneal O2 uptake (COU) remains undetermined. Here, we used a non-invasive self-referencing optical fiber O2 sensor-the scanning micro-optrode technique (SMOT)-to report the O2 partial pressure and flux variations at the ocular surface of rodents and non-human primates. In vivo spatial mapping in mice revealed a dist

An optical fiber-based point-of-care test for periodontal MMP-8 detection: A proof of concept.

OBJECTIVES: The evaluation of salivary biomarkers has been proposed as a simple and non-invasive aid to the conventional periodontal diagnosis based on clinical-radiographic parameters. Matrix metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8), especially in its active form, is considered one of the most reliable biomarkers of periodontitis, and point-of-care tests (POCTs) have been proposed for its clinical monitoring. In this proof-of-concept study, a novel highly sensitive POCT based on a plastic optical fiber (POF) biosensor exploiting surface plasmon resonance (SPR) to detect salivary MMP-8 is described. METHO

Low-Cost ZnO Spray-Coated Optical Fiber Sensor for Detecting VOC Biomarkers of Diabetes.

A non-invasive optical fiber sensor for detecting volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as biomarkers of diabetes is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It offers a low-cost and straightforward fabrication approach by implementing a one-step spray coating of a ZnO colloidal solution on a glass optical fiber. The structure of the optical fiber sensor is based on a single-mode fiber-coreless silica fiber-single-mode fiber (SMF-CSF-SMF) structure, where the CSF is the sensor region spliced between two SMFs. The ZnO layer of a higher refractive index coated over the sensing region improves the l
