Utility of injectable bisphosphonates in enhancing orthodontic retention in a goat model: A split-mouth study.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the utility of bisphosphonates in reducing relapse after orthodontic tooth movement when injected intra-periodontally in a goat model. METHODS: Right and left second incisors of four goats were extracted and the first and third incisors were approximated orthodontically and retained. A bisphosphonate gel was injected into the mesial and distal periodontal spaces of first and third incisors on one side, while the first and third incisors of the other side received normal saline as a control. After 12 weeks of retention, the orthodontic appliance

Essix appliances. Provisional anterior prosthesis for pre and post implant patients.

Missing anterior teeth are being replaced by implant-supported restorations quite frequently in modern dentistry. Providing the patient with a temporary prosthesis prior to or following implant fixture placement must satisfy established esthetic and functional criteria. When orthodontic treatment is included as part of the overall treatment effort, additional considerations include the retention and stabilization of newly established tooth positions. This article describes the fabrication, use and advantages of a provisional anterior prosthesis that replaces missing teeth prior to or following

Orthodontic derived microplastics impact macrophage differentiation and homeostasis.

BACKGROUND: Synthetic polymers are widely used in medical and dental appliances, including clear aligners, retainers, splints, and sleep devices. Despite their widespread use, little is known about the release of microplastics from traditional thermoformed polymers compared with recently developed direct-printed photopolymers. Plastic particles have been detected in a variety of human tissues such as, lung, liver, spleen and kidneys. Each of these sites contain local resident macrophages tasked with maintaining homeostasis by clearing cell debris and foreign bodies. Like these organs, the oral

Delayed Diagnosis and Multidisciplinary Management of a Compound Odontoma With Associated Dental Anomalies: A Rare Case Report.

Hyperdontia is a developmental anomaly that can disrupt normal tooth eruption and occlusal harmony. Compound odontomas, although benign and often asymptomatic, may cause delayed eruption and other complications requiring surgical management. This case report details the treatment of a 22-year-old female presenting with failure of eruption of the mandibular left permanent canine. Clinical and radiographic evaluation revealed a retained deciduous canine, a compound odontoma, and a horizontally impacted supernumerary tooth. Surgical intervention under local anesthesia involved extraction of the r

Effects of Central Retainer Depth on Stress Distribution and Fracture Resistance in Endocrown-restored Maxillary Premolars: 3D Finite Element and in vitro Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore how central retainer depth affects stress distribution and fracture resistance in endocrown-restored premolars. METHODS: A 3D finite element (FE) model of an intact maxillary premolar was established as a negative control. Five endocrown-restored FE models were established, differing in the extension of the central retainer inside the pulp chamber: 0, 2, 3, 4 and 5 mm. The remaining pulp cavity was filled with composite resin. Stress distributions were analysed under oblique loads. Thirty freshly extracted human maxillary premolars were randomly divided into three groups

In vivo biofilm formation on stainless steel bonded retainers during different oral health-care regimens.

Retention wires permanently bonded to the anterior teeth are used after orthodontic treatment to prevent the teeth from relapsing to pre-treatment positions. A disadvantage of bonded retainers is biofilm accumulation on the wires, which produces a higher incidence of gingival recession, increased pocket depth and bleeding on probing. This study compares in vivo biofilm formation on single-strand and multi-strand retention wires with different oral health-care regimens. Two-centimetre wires were placed in brackets that were bonded to the buccal side of the first molars and second premolars in t

Mini-implant anchorage for a skeletal class II malocclusion with missing mandibular incisors: a case report.

This case report describes the treatment of an adult female with a severe Class II malocclusion and congenitally missing mandibular incisors. It was decided to extract the maxillary first premolars and use mini-implants for en masse retraction of the maxillary anterior teeth. More than 13 mm of maxillary incisor retraction was obtained, with little change in the mandibular incisor inclination. The patient's facial esthetics showed dramatic improvement. The upper and lower lips were retracted by 6 mm and 7 mm, respectively. This helped reduce the mentalis strain and improve chin projection. In

Treatment of a severe Class III skeletal discrepancy at an appropriate age.

The 13-year-old female patient presented for correction of a severe Class III malocclusion with a Class III skeletal pattern. This was considered an appropriate age for treatment as earlier treatment may have been subject to relapse because significant facial growth may have occurred after treatment, and because treatment at a later age may have required orthognathic surgery. Initially, maxillary expansion was provided to widen the maxilla and to free the circum-maxillary sutures. Maxillary protraction headgear was worn to perform sagittal skeletal improvement. Fixed orthodontic appliances wer

Orthodontics First in Hemimandibular Hyperplasia. "Mind the Gap".

A 32-year-old man was referred to the Division of Orthodontics of the University of Naples "Federico II", with a 15-year history of gradually increasing right-sided facial asymmetry. Clinical and radiological examinations was consistent to hemimandibular hyperplasia, a rare developmental asymmetry characterized by three-dimensional enlargement of one-half of the mandible. The standard surgical-orthodontic management was proposed to the patient. However, he refused to undergo bimaxillary orthognatic surgery. Therefore, a different treatment was proposed based on the orthodontic technique of pre
