The Contributions of Pitch, Loudness, and Rate Control to Speech Naturalness in Cerebellar Ataxia.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to determine the relationship between the perceptual measure of speech naturalness and objective measures of pitch, loudness, and rate control as a potential tool for assessment of ataxic dysarthria. METHOD: Twenty-seven participants with ataxia and 29 age- and sex-matched control participants completed the pitch glide and loudness step tasks drawn from the Frenchay Dysarthria Assessment-Second Edition (FDA-2) in addition to speech diadochokinetic (DDK) tasks. First, group differences were compared for pitch variability in the pitch glide task, loudness var

Temporal order and processing acuity of visual, auditory, and tactile perception in developmentally dyslexic young adults.

We studied the temporal acuity of 16 developmentally dyslexic young adults in three perceptual modalities. The control group consisted of 16 age- and IQ-matched normal readers. Two methods were used. In the temporal order judgment (TOJ) method, the stimuli were spatially separate fingertip indentations in the tactile system, tone bursts of different pitches in audition, and light flashes in vision. Participants indicated which one of two stimuli appeared first. To test temporal processing acuity (TPA), the same 8-msec nonspeech stimuli were presented as two parallel sequences of three stimulus

Characteristics of Medial and Lateral Wall Cochlear Implant Arrays Demonstrated with Cone Beam CT and Evoked Electrical Auditory Brainstem Responses.

HYPOTHESIS: This study investigates how electrode array types-straight versus perimodiolar-affect cochlear implant (CI) placement (i.e., modiolar proximity and angular depth) and outcomes using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and evoked electrical auditory brainstem responses (eABR). BACKGROUND: Cochlear implants (CIs) have revolutionized auditory rehabilitation, yet optimizing electrode placement remains crucial for improving speech perception and pitch discrimination. Array designs influence electrode proximity to neural structures, impacting neural stimulation efficacy. METHODS: We a

Newborn brain event-related potentials revealing atypical processing of sound frequency and the subsequent association with later literacy skills in children with familial dyslexia.

The role played by an auditory-processing deficit in dyslexia has been debated for several decades. In a longitudinal study using brain event-related potentials (ERPs) we investigated 1) whether dyslexic children with familial risk background would show atypical pitch processing from birth and 2) how these newborn ERPs later relate to these same children's pre-reading cognitive skills and literacy outcomes. Auditory ERPs were measured at birth for tones varying in pitch and presented in an oddball paradigm (1100 Hz, 12%, and 1000 Hz, 88%). The brain responses of the typically reading control g

Human auditory-cortex mechanisms of preattentive sound discrimination.

Intracranial event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded in neurological patients to infrequent higher-pitch 'deviant' tones and to frequent 'standard' tones when they occurred, in random order in a mixed sequence of standard and deviant tones and when they occurred in separate sequences, that is, infrequent tones alone with intervals similar to inter-deviant intervals of the mixed sequence and frequent tones alone with intervals similar to those between the standard tones of the mixed sequence. When the tones were ignored, ERPs showed three types of responses revealing three different proce

Perceptual Adaptation of Lexical Tones Is Degraded but Can Be Improved With Lengthened Stimulus Duration in Musically Tone-Deaf Individuals.

PURPOSE: The current study investigated how individuals with congenital amusia (or "tone deafness") responded to lexical tones differed in stimulus duration and carried by distinct syllables. METHOD: Amusics were diagnosed to develop the experimental group to participate in an identification task and a discrimination task, with typical, musically intact listeners being the control group. The test stimuli were actual monosyllabic words in Mandarin Chinese, and they varied in stimulus duration (100 and 400 ms) and were presented in the low- and the high-variability conditions (the tone carried

Roles of posterior parietal and dorsal premotor cortices in relative pitch processing: Comparing musical intervals to lexical tones.

Humans use time-varying pitch patterns to convey information in music and speech. Recognition of musical melodies and lexical tones relies on relative pitch (RP), the ability to identify intervals between two pitches. RP processing in music is usually more fine-grained than that in tonal languages. In Western music, there are twelve pitch categories within an octave, whereas there are only three level (non-glide) lexical tones in Taiwanese (or Taiwanese Hokkien, a tonal language). The present study aimed at comparing the neural substrates underlying RP processing of musical melodic intervals w

Auditory temporal order discrimination and backward recognition masking in adults with dyslexia.

The ability of 20 adult dyslexic readers to extract frequency information from successive tone pairs was compared with that of IQ-matched controls using temporal order discrimination and auditory backward recognition masking (ABRM) tasks. In both paradigms, the interstimulus interval (ISI) between tones in a pair was either short (20 ms) or long (200 ms). Temporal order discrimination was better for both groups of listeners at long than at short ISIs, but no group differences in performance were observed at either ISI. Performance on the ABRM task was also better at long than at short ISIs and

Noise-induced cochlear damage assessed using electrophysiological and morphological criteria: an examination of the equal energy principle.

Cochlear damage immediately following exposure to continuous pure tones of varying intensity and duration was assessed in anaesthetized guinea pigs. Indices of damage used were elevation of N1 thresholds and severity of swelling of the afferent dendrites beneath the inner hair cell. The results were not wholly consistent with the assumptions of the equal energy principle. Longer duration exposures resulted in greater N1 threshold elevation and more severe swelling of dendrites than short exposures of the same total energy.

Outcomes Using the Optimized Pitch and Language Strategy Versus the Advanced Combination Encoder Strategy in Mandarin-Speaking Cochlear Implant Recipients.

OBJECTIVES: The experimental Optimized Pitch and Language (OPAL) strategy enhances coding of fundamental frequency (F0) information in the temporal envelope of electrical signals delivered to channels of a cochlear implant (CI). Previous studies with OPAL have explored performance on speech and lexical tone perception in Mandarin- and English-speaking CI recipients. However, it was not clear which cues to lexical tone (primary and/or secondary) were used by the Mandarin CI listeners. The primary aim of the present study was to investigate whether OPAL provides improved recognition of Mandarin

Differential sensitivity to changes in pitch acceleration in the auditory brainstem and cortex.

The cortical pitch-specific response (CPR) is differentially sensitive to pitch contours varying in rate of acceleration-time-variant Mandarin Tone2 (T2) versus constant, linear rising ramp (Linear)-as a function of language experience (Krishnan, Gandour, & Suresh, 2014). CPR and brainstem frequency following response (FFR) data were recorded concurrently from native Mandarin listeners using the same stimuli. Results showed that T2 elicited larger responses than Linear at both cortical and brainstem levels (CPR: Na-Pb, Pb-Nb; FFR). However, Pb-Nb exhibited a larger difference in magnitude betw

The Effect of Cochlear Damage on the Sensitivity to Harmonicity.

OBJECTIVES: A sum of simultaneous pure tones with harmonic relationships (i.e., simple frequency ratios) is normally heard as a single sound, with a single pitch, even when its components are fully resolved in the auditory periphery. This perceptual phenomenon called "harmonic fusion" is thought to play an important role in auditory scene analysis as listeners often have to segregate simultaneous harmonic sounds with different fundamental frequencies. The present study explored the consequences of mild or moderate cochlear hearing loss for the sensitivity to harmonicity and the detection of in

Are cochlear implant patients suffering from perceptual dissonance?

Cochlear implants provide functional hearing to the majority of recipients and have gained widespread acceptance clinically, but the range of performance remains great and largely unexplained. Designs for implanted electrodes and electronics have converged, whereas novel speech processing strategies have proliferated. For each patient, the fitting audiologist must sort empirically through options that produce large but idiosyncratic differences in both objective performance and subjective preference. This review and analysis suggests that the place-pitch and rate-pitch theories on which cochle

Manifestations of intense noise stimulation on spontaneous otoacoustic emission and threshold microstructure: experiment and model.

Comparison between changes that occur simultaneously on spontaneous otoacoustic emissions (SOAEs) and on other cochlear origin phenomena can contribute to the understanding of cochlear micromechanical activity. The temporary changes that arise after short noise exposure are investigated in the following paper. The effects of noise exposure on the threshold microstructure near an SOAE and on the amplitude and frequency of the SOAE were measured. These experimental results indicate the following: (1) exposure to wideband noise for a short time causes a temporary reduction in the SOAE frequency a

Multichannel auditory brain stem implant: case studies comparing fitting strategies and results.

A new 8-electrode prosthesis has been developed for individuals deafened by bilateral auditory nerve tumors (neurofibromatosis-2). Twelve patients have received the multichannel auditory brain stem implant at House Ear Institute since 1992, 11 of whom receive useful auditory sensations. Processor fitting includes scaling and ranking of electrode-specific pitch sensations, and determination of any nonauditory sensations. Two representative patients differing in experience and number of usable electrodes are compared in terms of range of auditory sensations and speech perception performance. An

Categorical perception of lexical tones in mandarin-speaking congenital amusics.

Previous research suggests that within Mandarin-speaking congenital amusics, only a subgroup has behavioral lexical tone perception impairments (tone agnosia), whereas the rest of amusics do not. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the categorical nature of lexical tone perception in Mandarin-speaking amusics with and without behavioral lexical tone deficits. Three groups of listeners (controls, pure amusics, and amusics with tone agnosia) participated in tone identification and discrimination tasks. Indexes of the categorical perception (CP) of a physical continuum of fundamen

Steady-state responses to concurrent melodies: source distribution, top-down, and bottom-up attention.

Humans can direct attentional resources to a single sound occurring simultaneously among others to extract the most behaviourally relevant information present. To investigate this cognitive phenomenon in a precise manner, we used frequency-tagging to separate neural auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs) that can be traced back to each auditory stimulus, from the neural mix elicited by multiple simultaneous sounds. Using a mixture of 2 frequency-tagged melody streams, we instructed participants to selectively attend to one stream or the other while following the development of the pitch conto

Representations of Invariant Musical Categories Are Decodable by Pattern Analysis of Locally Distributed BOLD Responses in Superior Temporal and Intraparietal Sulci.

In categorical perception (CP), continuous physical signals are mapped to discrete perceptual bins: mental categories not found in the physical world. CP has been demonstrated across multiple sensory modalities and, in audition, for certain over-learned speech and musical sounds. The neural basis of auditory CP, however, remains ambiguous, including its robustness in nonspeech processes and the relative roles of left/right hemispheres; primary/nonprimary cortices; and ventral/dorsal perceptual processing streams. Here, highly trained musicians listened to 2-tone musical intervals, which they p
