Uncemented three-dimensional-printed prosthetic reconstruction for massive bone defects of the proximal tibia.

BACKGROUND: Currently, it is challenging to treat massive bone defects of proximal tibia. Although numerous methods are available for reconstruction with epiphysis preservation, limitations in knee function and complications are noted with these methods. Our paper describes our attempt to reconstruct a marked defect in the proximal tibia with an uncemented three-dimensional (3D)-printed prosthesis and to evaluate the prosthesis design and short-term outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old boy with metaphyseal osteosarcoma of the tibia underwent intercalary allograft reconstruction followin

The development of a low-cost three-dimensional printed shoulder, arm, and hand prostheses for children.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The prosthetic options for higher level amputees are limited and costly. Advancements in computer-aided design programs and three-dimensional printing offer the possibility of designing and manufacturing transitional prostheses at very low cost. The aim of this project was to describe an inexpensive three-dimensional printed mechanical shoulder prosthesis to assist a pre-selected subject in performing bi-manual activities. TECHNIQUE: The main function of the body-powered, manually adjusted three-dimensional printed shoulder prosthesis is to provide a cost-effective, highly

Is Point of Care Three-Dimensional Printing of Polyaryletherketone Triflange Cups Feasible for Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Titanium three-dimensional (3D) printed triflange cups are an established treatment option for severe pelvic discontinuity, but are costly and, when produced offsite, involve weeks of surgical delay. Three-dimensional printing of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) at the point of care (POC) has recently been 510(k) cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for cranioplasty to reduce implant cost and time to treatment. We asked in this pilot study whether 3D-printed triflange cups from high-strength polyaryletherketone (PAEK) polymers like PEEK could be produced with sufficient strength

Three-dimensional printing models improve long-term retention in medical education of pathoanatomy: A randomized controlled study.

Craniosynostosis is a rare and complex pathology, and visuospatial skills are necessary for a good understanding of the condition. While the use of three-dimensional (3D) models has improved the understanding of complex craniofacial anatomy, no study has evaluated the impact of this teaching support on long-term retention. Our randomized controlled trial was designed to compare the long-term retention of information with 3D-printed models of four types of craniosynostosis versus classic 3D reconstructions displayed in two-dimensional (2D) among undergraduate students. All students benefited fr

A Hem-o-Lok-Induced Tracheoesophageal Fistula Cured by Temporary Airway Stenting Modified With Three-Dimensional Printing.

We present the case of a fistula between the trachea and the esophagogastric anastomosis in a 58-year-old man after esophagectomy. A Hem-o-Lok clip (Teleflex, Morrisville, NC) used at the time to ligate the azygos vein was discovered by esophagoscopy and bronchoscopy to be eroding into both structures. A covered self-expandable Y-shaped metallic tracheobronchial stent was customized with a three-dimensional printed airway model and inserted in place with endoscopic injection of fibrin glue to the anastomotic site. The stent was withdrawn 64 days after implantation, with complete healing of the

Development of hepatic blocks using human adipose tissue-derived stem cells through three-dimensional cell printing techniques.

Currently, most acute liver diseases are treated through liver transplantation. However, transplantation is limited by organ donor scarcity and immune rejection response. Moreover, only three types of commercial bio-artificial livers are available, and these have marginal effects on survival rates. Therefore, tissue regenerative medicine using stem cells has been developed to solve such unmet medical needs. In this study, we attempted to differentiate human adipose stem cells (hASCs) into hepatocyte-like cells (AHLCs) and fabricate liver regenerative hepatic block scaffolds, consisting of only

First Experience With a Novel Self-Expandable Valve for Mitral Annular Calcification Guided by Three-Dimensional Printing.

Transcatheter mitral valve replacement (TMVR) may emerge as a surgical alternative for high-risk patients with severe mitral annular calcification (MAC), yet several questions remain to be addressed. We present the case of a 67-year-old high-risk female patient with severe MAC (MAC score = 8) and mitral stenosis (effective orifice area = 121.3 mm2). To avoid conventional high-risk surgery, we opted to perform the TMVR using the novel Mi-thos system via the transapical approach. We utilized a patient-specific three-dimensional printed model derived by preprocedural computed tomography angiograp
