Selection of an optimal neural network architecture for computer-aided detection of microcalcifications--comparison of automated optimization techniques.

Many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems use neural networks (NNs) for either detection or classification of abnormalities. Currently, most NNs are "optimized" by manual search in a very limited parameter space. In this work, we evaluated the use of automated optimization methods for selecting an optimal convolution neural network (CNN) architecture. Three automated methods, the steepest descent (SD), the simulated annealing (SA), and the genetic algorithm (GA), were compared. We used as an example the CNN that classifies true and false microcalcifications detected on digitized mammograms b

Automatic segmentation of intra-cochlear anatomy in post-implantation CT of unilateral cochlear implant recipients.

A cochlear implant (CI) is a neural prosthetic device that restores hearing by directly stimulating the auditory nerve using an electrode array that is implanted in the cochlea. In CI surgery, the surgeon accesses the cochlea and makes an opening where he/she inserts the electrode array blind to internal structures of the cochlea. Because of this, the final position of the electrode array relative to intra-cochlear anatomy is generally unknown. We have recently developed an approach for determining electrode array position relative to intra-cochlear anatomy using a pre- and a post-implantation

Cone-beam imaging in dentistry.

Cone-beam imaging has gained broad acceptance in dentistry in the last 5 years. The purpose of this review is to describe the use in dentistry and consider issues requiring further development. Cone-beam machines emit an x-ray beam shaped liked a cone rather than a fan as in conventional computed tomography (CT) machines. After this beam passes through the patient the remnant beam is captured on an amorphous silicon flat panel or image intensifier/charge-coupled device (CCD) detector. The beam diameter ranges from 4 to 30 cm and exposes the head in one pass around the patient capturing from 16

Radiomics-Based Assessment of Primary Sjögren's Syndrome From Salivary Gland Ultrasonography Images.

Salivary gland ultrasonography (SGUS) has shown good potential in the diagnosis of primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). However, a series of international studies have reported needs for improvements of the existing pSS scoring procedures in terms of inter/intra observer reliability before being established as standardized diagnostic tools. The present study aims to solve this problem by employing radiomics features and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms to make the pSS scoring more objective and faster compared to human expert scoring. The assessment of AI algorithms was performed on a two-

Validation of synthesized normal-resolution image data generated from high-resolution acquisitions on a commercial CT scanner.

PURPOSE: To validate a normal-resolution (NR) simulation (NRsim) algorithm that uses high-resolution (HR) or super-high resolution (SHR) acquisitions on a commercial HR computed tomography (CT) scanner by comparing image quality between NRsim-generated images and actual NR images. NRsim is intended to allow direct comparison between normal-resolution CT and HR/SHR reconstructions in clinical investigations, without repeating exams. METHODS: The Aquilion Precision CT (Canon Medical Systems Corporation) HR CT scanner has three resolution modes resulting from detector binning in the channel (x-y

Computer-aided diagnosis of malignant mammograms using Zernike moments and SVM.

This work is directed toward the development of a computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system to detect abnormalities or suspicious areas in digital mammograms and classify them as malignant or nonmalignant. Original mammogram is preprocessed to separate the breast region from its background. To work on the suspicious area of the breast, region of interest (ROI) patches of a fixed size of 128×128 are extracted from the original large-sized digital mammograms. For training, patches are extracted manually from a preprocessed mammogram. For testing, patches are extracted from a highly dense area identi

Locating the periapical region in dental radiographs using digital image analysis.

An algorithm was designed to automatically obtain information on the orientation of roots in dental radiographs aimed at localizing the periapical region. A curve was approximated mathematically by a cubic polynomial to intersect the boundary of the root at its apex. The performance was judged by comparing the location of this intersection with the actual location of the apex as determined by five expert observers. In an experiment with 262 roots of the eight tooth groups, the distance between these two points was less than 1 mm in 67.9% of all cases and less than 2 mm in 88.2%. The performanc

Automatic detection of scoliotic curves in posteroanterior radiographs.

Spinal deformities are diagnosed using posteroanterior (PA) radiographs. Automatic detection of the spine on conventional radiographs would be of interest to quantify curve severity, would help reduce observer variability and would allow large-scale retrospective studies on radiographic databases. The goal of this paper is to present a new method for automatic detection of spinal curves from a PA radiograph. A region of interest (ROI) is first extracted according to the 2-D shape variability of the spine obtained from a set of PA radiographs of scoliotic patients. This region includes 17 bound

Double-edge detection of radiographic lumbar vertebrae images using pressurized open DGVF snakes.

The detection of double edges in X-ray images of lumbar vertebrae is of prime importance in the assessment of vertebral injury or collapse that may be caused by osteoporosis and other spine pathology. In addition, if the above double-edge detection process is conducted within an automatic framework, it would not only facilitate inexpensive and fast means of obtaining objective morphometric measurements on the spine, but also remove the human subjectivity involved in the morphometric analysis. This paper proposes a novel force-formulation scheme, termed as pressurized open directional gradient

Dental arch asymmetry in the mixed dentition.

Many orthodontists evaluate dental asymmetry clinically by comparing landmarks on the occlusal surfaces of dental casts. The purpose of this study was to quantify and describe maxillary and mandibular intra-arch asymmetry in 52 Caucasian children in the mixed dentition, and to determine if a relationship exists between intra-arch and interarch asymmetry. The median palatal plane (MPP) was used as a reference for transverse measurements. A computer-constructed transverse palatal plane (TPP) was the reference for anteroposterior measurements. Asymmetry greater than 2.0 mm was present at any one

Postprocessing in Maxillofacial Multidetector Computed Tomography.

Multidetector computed tomography (CT) and volumetric rendering techniques have always been a useful support for the anatomical and pathological study of the maxillofacial district. Nowadays accessibility to multidetector CT scanners allows the achievement of images with an extremely thin collimation and with high spatial resolution, not only along the axial plane but also along the patient's longitudinal axis. This feature is the main theoretical assumption for multiplanar imaging and for an optimal 3-dimensional postprocessing. Multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) techniques permit images along

Level set segmentation of breast masses in contrast-enhanced dedicated breast CT and evaluation of stopping criteria.

Dedicated breast CT (bCT) produces high-resolution 3D tomographic images of the breast, fully resolving fibroglandular tissue structures within the breast and allowing for breast lesion detection and assessment in 3D. In order to enable quantitative analysis, such as volumetrics, automated lesion segmentation on bCT is highly desirable. In addition, accurate output from CAD (computer-aided detection/diagnosis) methods depends on sufficient segmentation of lesions. Thus, in this study, we present a 3D lesion segmentation method for breast masses in contrast-enhanced bCT images. The segmentation
