Walk in our shoes: older homeless women's perceptions of the challenges of navigating streets and shelter life.

INTRODUCTION: Older women experiencing homelessness (OWEH) have been a hidden or invisible population; however, with rising numbers globally, they are gaining attention. Our study examines what it means to be a woman in her 50s who is struggling financially and precariously housed in the United States. Although in their 50s, these women often experience accelerated aging and exhibit chronic health conditions comparable to those of housed women in their 70s and 80s. Lacking access to both public old-age benefits and family support, they often fall between the cracks of the nation's safety net s

Comparative biomechanical analysis of volleyball court shoes during sport-specific tasks in competitive adolescent female volleyball players.

INTRODUCTION: High-level volleyball requires efficient movement patterns, force attenuation, and rapid, multidirectional movements. While players may exhibit inherent biomechanical risk factors, investigating how footwear affects female athletes' movement is essential for developing a comprehensive understanding of determinants contributing to injury risk. The purpose of this study was to identify biomechanical differences associated with three volleyball court shoes. METHODS: Twenty-nine healthy female volleyball players (15.52 ± 1.47 years, 168.72 ± 5.72 cm, 62.44 ± 7.71 kg) completed a cou…

Effect of foot-shaped bionic shoes on ground reaction forces and foot stress at various running speeds.

This study examined ground reaction forces(GRFs) and bone stress differences between bionic running shoes (with foot-mimicking soles) and traditional shoes during running.Sixteen experienced male runners ran at 10, 12, and 14 km/h in both shoe types. Two-way ANOVA and SPM1d showed that bionic shoes had significantly lower peak propulsive but higher peak braking forces than traditional shoes.Bionic shoes also exhibited lower vertical forces in early stance and altered anterior-posterior forces patterns in late stance; finite element analysis indicated lower metatarsal stress in the bionic midso…

Effects of varying longitudinal bending stiffness in running shoes on lower limb biomechanics of elite marathon runners.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the effect of three levels of longitudinal bending stiffness (LBS) in carbon-plated shoes on lower limb biomechanics. METHODS: Fifteen elite male marathon runners, each with a personal best under 3 h, participated in the study. They were tested wearing shoes with three LBS levels: low (LLBS, 0.31 Nm/deg), medium (MLBS, 0.40 Nm/deg), and high (HLBS, 0.48 Nm/deg). All participants ran at a constant speed of 4.76 m/s. Kinematic and kinetic data were synchronously collected using the VICON motion capture system and three AMTI force plates. Angular parameters of the …

Effects of using exposure footwear for firemen and fitness training shoes on lower limb biomechanics during walking.

Exposure footwear for firemen (EFF) is a crucial component of firefighters' personal protective equipment, designed to protect against hazards, such as heat, punctures, impact, and electrocution. However, its effect on gait biomechanics remains unclear. This study was aimed to investigate the influence of EFF on firefighters' lower limb biomechanical performance and the underlying mechanisms. Twenty healthy male firefighters (mean height: 175.41 ± 4.39 cm, mean weight: 65.74 ± 5.81 kg, mean BMI: 21.37 ± 2.17 kg/m2) were randomly assigned to wear EFF and fitness training shoes for comparison du…

Finite element analysis-based optimization of longitudinal bending stiffness and rearfoot stability in carbon-plated running shoes.

INTRODUCTION: The carbon-plated midsole in running shoes plays a pivotal role in enhancing the runner's performance by storing and releasing energy. A key factor in running shoes is the Longitudinal Bending Stiffness (LBS), where higher LBS usually improves energy efficiency by enhancing energy return during a running cycle. However, a critical trade-off exists: excessive LBS can diminish performance and may increase the risk of injury. METHODS: To this end, this study aims to model and optimize the balance between energy efficiency and stability through finite element analysis (FEA). Specifi…

The Mediating Effect of Running Biomechanics, Anthropometrics, Muscle Architecture, and Comfort on Running Economy Across Different Shoes.

Advancements in shoe technology can improve running economy (RE). However, the effects of advanced footwear technology (AFT) have typically been investigated in one specific shoe brand and at relatively high speeds. Moreover, there is often considerable variability in the response to different running shoes. This study, therefore, investigated the effect of five different shoes (two with AFT, one standard shoe, one traditional racing flat, and participants' own shoes) on RE at a speed representative of recreational runners. Further, it also explored whether spatiotemporal running metrics, anth…

Ground reaction forces and free moment using neutral, motion control, and minimalist shoes in forefoot runner females.

Despite advances in footwear industry, running related injuries (RRI) rate is high in female runners. Selection of proper shoe is a big challenge for runners. We aimed to compare the effects of running-induced fatigue on ground reaction forces and free moments while using neutral (N-Shoes), motion control (MC-Shoes), and minimalist shoes (M-Shoes) in forefoot runner females. Twenty recreational female forefoot runners completed fatiguing treadmill running protocol using M-Shoes, MC-Shoes and N-Shoes in three separated sessions. Participants ran on a runway at 3.3 m/s before and after fatiguing…

A Deep Learning Model for 3D Ground Reaction Force Estimation Using Shoes with Three Uniaxial Load Cells.

Ground reaction force (GRF) is essential for estimating muscle strength and joint torque in inverse dynamic analysis. Typically, it is measured using a force plate. However, force plates have spatial limitations, and studies of gaits involve numerous steps and thus require a large number of force plates, which is disadvantageous. To overcome these challenges, we developed a deep learning model for estimating three-axis GRF utilizing shoes with three uniaxial load cells. GRF data were collected from 81 people as they walked on two force plates while wearing shoes with three load cells. The thre…

Simulation of Lower Limb Muscle Activation Using Running Shoes with Different Heel-to-Toe Drops Using Opensim.

BACKGROUND: Although numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the acute effects of shoe drops on running kinematics and kinetic variables, their effects on muscle forces remain unknown. Thus, the primary aim of this study was to compare the muscle force, kinematics, and kinetic variables of habitually rearfoot runners with heel-to-toe drops of negative 8 mm shoes (minimalist shoes) and positive 9 mm shoes (normal shoes) during the running stance phase by using musculoskeletal modeling and simulation techniques. METHODS: Experimental data of lower limb kinematics, ground reaction fo…

Lower impact forces but greater burden for the musculoskeletal system in running shoes with greater cushioning stiffness.

In a recent randomised trial investigating running shoe cushioning, injury risk was greater in recreational runners who trained in the shoe version with greater cushioning stiffness (Stiff) compared to those using the Soft version. However, vertical impact peak force (VIPF) was lower in the Stiff version. To investigate further the mechanisms involved in the protective effect of greater cushioning, the present study used an intra-subject design and analysed the differences in running kinematics and kinetics between the Stiff and Soft shoe versions on a subsample of 41 runners from the previous

Biomechanical effects of rocker shoes on plantar aponeurosis strain in patients with plantar fasciitis and healthy controls.

Plantar fasciitis is a frequently occurring overuse injury of the foot. Shoes with a stiff rocker profile are a commonly prescribed treatment modality used to alleviate complaints associated with plantar fasciitis. In rocker shoes the apex position was moved proximally as compared to normal shoes, limiting the progression of the ground reaction forces (GRF) and peak plantarflexion moments during gait. A stiff sole minimizes dorsiflexion of the toes. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the biomechanical effects of rocker shoes lead to minimization of plantar aponeurosis (PA) strain…
