BACKGROUND: The constraint of the polyethylene liner in reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) can affect glenohumeral joint stability. However, its influence on glenohumeral range of motion (ROM) remains unclear. Therefore, it was the objective of this study to determine the effect of sequentially increasing polyethylene liner constraint on impingement-free ROM following rTSA. Additionally, these sequentially increasing constraint designs were evaluated with various humeral neck-shaft angles (NSAs), glenosphere diameters, and a new variable termed the polyethylene rim width.

The success of joint replacement surgery has been responsible for raising patients' expectations regarding the procedure. Many of these procedures are currently designed not only to relive the pain caused by arthrosis, but also to enable patients to achieve functional recovery and to engage in some degree of physical activity and sports. However, as physical exercise causes an increase in forces exercised through the articular prosthesis, it can be an important risk factor for its early failure. Scientific literature on sports after arthroplasty is limited to small-scale retrospective studies

In this retrospective study we reviewed the outcomes of 46 trapeziometacarpal joint replacements with the Moovis® prosthesis in 46 patients with painful osteoarthritis. The dual mobility design of this prosthesis aims to reduce prosthetic dislocation and subsidence. At follow-up 2 to 6 years (mean 5 years) after operation, pain was reduced from 6 to 0 on a visual analogue scale from 0 to 10. The scores of the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand questionnaire improved significantly. Thumb motion and grip and pinch strength did not differ significantly from the contralateral hand. T

Periprosthetic humeral fractures represent a relevant complication of shoulder arthroplasty and the incidence of 0.5-3% is expected to increase given current demographic trends. Biomechanical aspects are considered in therapeutic decision-making and planning, including fracture location and morphology as well as patient-specific factors. These include among others osteoporosis and age, but also other comorbidities of the patient, such as nicotine abuse or obesity. The fracture classification follows the internationally recognized system developed by Sanchez-Sotelo und Athwal. Conservative trea

BACKGROUND: Revision shoulder arthroplasty can be complicated by osseous and soft tissue deficiencies. Proximal humeral bone loss can result in diminished implant stability and reduced functional outcomes, and some studies have advocated the use of humeral allograft in this setting. This study compares the outcomes of revision reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) in patients both with and without proximal humeral bone loss.
METHODS: During a 6-year period, 32 patients were revised to RTSA for failed shoulder hemiarthroplasty. Proximal humeral bone loss was found in 16 patients, with an

PURPOSE: To compare aseptic glenoid baseplate loosening (AGBL) and AGBL-free survival after primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) using a lateralised convex baseplate with either helical blade or central peg fixation.
METHODS: Multicentre retrospective analysis of 231 primary RTSAs with ≥ two years follow-up (helical blade, n = 127; central peg, n = 104), all with non-locking peripheral screws. AGBL was assessed radiographically; septic and post-traumatic loosenings were not classified as AGBL. AGBL rates and survival times were compared using Kaplan-Meier estimates and log-rank

BACKGROUND: Pyrocarbon hemi-resurfacing and pyrocarbon hemi-arthroplasty is an emerging class of arthroplasty that demonstrates superior survivorship compared with metal hemiarthroplasty and resurfacing. However, it is unknown whether it is a superior option when compared to total shoulder arthroplasty in young patients. We compared the survivorship and reasons for revision between pyrocarbon resurfacing and the best-performing anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty prostheses from a large national arthroplasty registry.
METHODS: The study population included all primary shoulder arthroplasty p

BACKGROUND: Early reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) designs demonstrated high glenoid baseplate complication and revision rates. Although contemporary designs have reduced the incidence of glenoid baseplate failures, there are reports of elevated failure risks in RTSA with glenoid bone grafting within the first 2 years. This study aims to evaluate the incidence and etiology of aseptic glenoid baseplate failure with a contemporary central screw baseplate. The null hypothesis is that majority of the baseplate failure occurs within the first 2 years and that use of glenoid bone grafting

BACKGROUND: France has significantly contributed to the development of upper limb surgery over the past century. Although several French techniques and implants are now used worldwide, their historical origin, their technical evolution and the level of evidence supporting their status as "gold standards" have rarely been gathered. This narrative review aims to analyze from a short historical point of view with long-term published evidence of French innovations in shoulder, elbow and hand surgery that have achieved international reference status.
METHODS: This narrative review will cover four

BACKGROUND: We report a retrospective review of surface replacement hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder with biologic resurfacing of the glenoid, for relatively young patients suffering from advanced glenohumeral arthritis. It was hoped that the resurfacing fascia would prevent glenoid erosion for a period of time.
METHODS: This surgery was performed by two surgeons between 1996 and 2005. The indications for the arthroplasty were severe pain and limitation of function, in relatively young patients with advanced glenohumeral arthritis but an intact rotator cuff.
RESULTS: Eighteen shoulders, with

BACKGROUND: The Shoulder Arthroplasty Smart (SAS) score is a new, validated machine learning-derived outcome measure that requires six input parameters. The SAS score has the potential to replace legacy shoulder outcome scores.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of a multinational shoulder arthroplasty database of one platform shoulder prosthesis (used interchangeably for anatomic and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty). All primary shoulder arthroplasties with a minimum of two-year follow-up and an available SAS score were evaluated. Associations between scoring systems were asses…

BACKGROUND: Shoulder arthroplasty effectively treats various degenerative and traumatic shoulder conditions, but outcomes can be compromised by complications, limited mobility, and persistent pain. The impact of previous nonarthroplasty surgery on functional outcomes remains unclear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine if a history of prior nonarthroplasty shoulder surgery is associated with worse functional outcomes after primary shoulder arthroplasty.
METHODS: This registry study with data sourced from the Dutch Arthroplasty Register (LROI) includes adult patients who under

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of the proximal humerus in children who undergo bone tumor resection is challenging because of patients' small bone size and possible limb length discrepancy at the end of skeletal growth due to loss of the physis. There are several options for proximal humerus reconstruction in children, such as clavicula pro humero, free vascularized fibula grafting, massive bone osteoarticular allografting, endoprostheses, and allograft-prosthesis composites, but no consensus exists on the best method for reconstruction. Resurfaced allograft-prosthesis composites could be an alter
