Ending the HIV epidemic using National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS): Recommendations based on DC model.

INTRODUCTION: Social network strategies have been used by health departments to identify undiagnosed cases of HIV. Heterosexual cycle (HET4) of National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) is a social network strategy implemented in jurisdictions. The main objectives of this research are to 1) evaluate the utility of the NHBS HET cycle data for network analysis; 2) to apply statistical analysis in support of previous HIV research, as well as to develop new research results focused on demographic variables and prevention/intervention with respect to heterosexual HIV risk; and 3) to employ NHBS d

Social and structural factors associated with substance use within the support network of adults living in precarious housing in a socially marginalized neighborhood of Vancouver, Canada.

BACKGROUND: The structure of a social network as well as peer behaviours are thought to affect personal substance use. Where substance use may create health risks, understanding the contribution of social networks to substance use may be valuable for the design and implementation of harm reduction or other interventions. We examined the social support network of people living in precarious housing in a socially marginalized neighborhood of Vancouver, and analysed associations between social network structure, personal substance use, and supporters' substance use. METHODS: An ongoing, longitud

Social anxiety as a basis for friendship selection and socialization in adolescents' social networks.

Socially anxious children and adolescents have previously been found to have friends with similarly socially anxious, withdrawn behavioral characteristics. How peers might socialize social anxiety over time has, however, not been thoroughly investigated. We examined this in a sample of 834 youths (339 girls and 495 boys; M=14.29), followed for 3 years. We used the social network analysis software SIENA to analyze the data. The results showed that youths who were socially anxious were less popular and chose fewer friends in the network. They also tended to choose friends who were socially anxio…

Cost-effectiveness of eHealth-based HIV pre-exposure intervention for recreational drugs using among men who have sex with men in China: a modelling study.

BACKGROUND: Recreational drug (RD) is widespread among men who have sex with men (MSM), inspiring "Chemsex" which then exacerbates the spread of HIV. Electronic health (eHealth) can effectively intervene in RD use, while the efficacy of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in HIV prevention has been well-documented. However, eHealth and PrEP have not been implemented on a large-scale in China, and the cost-effectiveness of intervention remains uncertain. This study conducted a dynamic modelling to predict HIV prevalence trends among MSM and the cost-effectiveness of various interventions. MET

The relationship of social environment, social networks, and health outcomes in the Seattle Longitudinal Study: two analytical approaches.

This study examined the relation of social networks and perceived social environment to health outcomes and cost utilization over a 1-year period in a community sample of 387 (173 males, 214 females). Two analytical strategies, a variable-oriented approach and a subject-oriented approach, were used to complement each other: structural equation modeling assessed the direct relationship between social relationships and health, while cluster analysis examined how social relationship patterns were related to health outcomes. Lower levels of perceived social environment were associated with an incr

Social network structure and HIV infection among injecting drug users in Lithuania: gatekeepers as bridges of infection.

The aim of the study was to assess-while controlling for individual risk characteristics-how certain social network structural characteristics (degree, eigenvector, and betweenness centrality) are related to HIV infections. Injecting drug users (N = 299) in Vilnius, Lithuania were recruited using incentivized chain referral sampling for a cross-sectional study. Sociometric social links were established between participants, and UCINET was used to calculate network measures. HIV prevalence was 10 %, and all except two knew they were infected. Of the five variables that remained significant in t

Patterns and effects of social integration on housing stability, mental health and substance use outcomes among participants in a randomized controlled Housing First trial.

INTRODUCTION: Recent research has shown that social integration, involving community integration and social support, can be protective resources for the health of homeless individuals. However, it is not clear how social integration affects health in the transition from homelessness into housing, and subsequent housing retention. This paper examines, through mixed quantitative and qualitative methods, how social integration changes over time, and how these changes relate to housing stability, substance use and mental health outcomes among a sample of homeless individuals experiencing mental il

Environmental predictors of objectively measured out-of-home time among older adults with cognitive decline.

BACKGROUND: Older adults with cognitive decline are vulnerable to various health problems. Going out of home for longer time could be beneficial for their health. Identifying modifiable predictors is essential for developing effective strategies that would increase time spent out-of-home by older adults. This study examined social and physical environmental predictors of objectively measured out-of-home time spent among older adults with cognitive decline. METHODS: This study was a secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (n = 147). Out-of-home time per day was measured by a Global

Examining social identity transition from a relational perspective: a qualitative study across treatment and non-treatment pathways.

BACKGROUND: Relational rather than individualistic understandings of recovery in the context of alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems have gained recognition. Social identity models, such as the Social Identity Model of Recovery (SIMOR) highlight recovery as a process of social identity transformation. However, these developments are primarily grounded in treatment and peer support settings, potentially underemphasizing the complex dynamics of social identity processes across alternative recovery pathways. Informed by critical drug studies and a relational recovery perspective, the current stu

Lost Legacies: The Dual Burden of Bereavement and Parenthood Under China's One-Child Policy.

This study examines the psychological impacts of only-child status and bereavement among older adults. Utilizing 2014-2020 China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) data, the research assessed depression via the CESD-9 and social networks through the Lubben Social Network Scale-6. Findings reveal that while having an only child initially correlates with reduced depressive symptoms, losing that child significantly exacerbates mental health challenges and hinders social adaptation. This adverse interaction is primarily mediated by the shrinkage of family and friend networks. Heterogeneity a

Social network size and cognitive decline in older adults experiencing depressive symptoms and loneliness.

OBJECTIVES: This paper evaluates the association between social network size and cognitive decline in older adults, approximately 61 years and older, with or without depressive symptoms and/or loneliness. METHOD: This study is a secondary data analysis of the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP), which is a population-based cohort study. Data collection occurred in three-year cycles from 1993 to 2012, consisting of a maximum of up to six cycles, including baseline. Mixed effects regression models were conducted to evaluate the relationship between social network size and cognitive decline.

Effect of Infant Presence on Social Networks of Sterilized and Intact Wild Female Balinese Macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Contraception is increasingly used to control wild animal populations. However, as reproductive condition influences social interactions in primates, the absence of new offspring could influence the females' social integration. We studied two groups of wild macaques (Macaca fascicularis) including females recently sterilized in the Ubud Monkey Forest, Indonesia. We used social network analysis to examine female grooming and proximity networks and investigated the role of infant presence on social centrality and group connectivity, while controlling for the fertility status (sterilized N = 14, …

Methamphetamine as a Social Necessity: Perspectives from Chinese Female Drug Users.

Guided by the drug career and normalization thesis, this study highlights the inherently social nature of methamphetamine (meth) use, with a particular focus on the pivotal role of meth-use networks among Chinese female drug users. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 34 female drug users to explore their social experiences with meth use. Thematic analysis revealed that the influence of close female friends and the ready availability of meth contribute to its emergence as a social necessity throughout these women's drug trajectories. Participants often initiated meth use

Exploring Junior Residents' Barriers in Mobilizing Social Capital and Their Coping: A Qualitative Ego Social Network Study.

BACKGROUND: Residents rely on social support from team members to navigate patient care, while also facing challenges integrating into the healthcare team. Although prior research has explored help-seeking behavior, little attention has been given to how residents overcome barriers to mobilizing social resources. This study explores how, in daily clinical practice, do residents perceive and respond to barriers in accessing and making use of social capital during challenging situations? METHODS: We used a mixed-methods social network approach. Twenty-nine junior residents from various specialt

The relationship between passive social network site use and sub-threshold depression among college students: a moderated mediation model.

BACKGROUND: Sub-threshold depression is a prevalent psychological adaptation issue among university students. Although prior research has explored the potential relationship between social media use and depressive symptoms, the findings have been inconsistent, and the potential mediating and moderating mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to examine the relationship between passive social network site use and sub-threshold depression in college students from the perspective of the differential susceptibility to media effects model, investigating the mediating role of fear of missing out
