Leaching and aging decrease nickel toxicity to soil microbial processes in soils freshly spiked with nickel chloride.

Nickel is a trace metal that exhibits pronounced long-term immobilization reactions in soil. It is unknown if the slowly decreasing solubility of Ni in soil on aging correlates with decreased toxicity to soil biota. Three uncontaminated soils (pH 4.5-7.6) were contaminated with NiCl2 and experimentally leached or incubated outdoors with free drainage for up to 15 months. Nickel toxicity was measured for three microbial processes (potential nitrification rate, glucose-induced respiration, and C mineralization of maize residue). Results for leached and aged samples were compared with results for

Quantification of soil-to-plant transport of recombinant nucleopolyhedrovirus: effects of soil type and moisture, air currents, and precipitation.

Significantly more occlusion bodies (OB) of DuPont viral construct HzSNPV-LqhIT2, expressing a scorpion toxin, were transported by artificial rainfall to cotton plants from sandy soil (70:15:15 sand-silt-clay) than from silt (15:70:15) and significantly more from silt than from clay (15:15:70). The amounts transported by 5 versus 50 mm of precipitation were the same, and transport was zero when there was no precipitation. In treatments that included precipitation, the mean number of viable OB transported to entire, 25- to 35-cm-tall cotton plants ranged from 56 (clay soil, 5 mm of rain) to 226

Tungsten in Agricultural Soil Triggers Coordinated Bioenergetic Responses and Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis in Earthworms: Implications for Agricultural Soil Health.

Tungsten (W) can accumulate in agricultural soils near mining, smelting, industrial, and waste-disposal sites, yet its chronic effects on beneficial soil fauna remain poorly understood. Eisenia fetida were exposed for 28 d to soil W concentrations selected with reference to agricultural contamination and toxicity assessment. Despite minimal mortality, W caused concentration-dependent growth inhibition and pronounced reproductive toxicity, with cocoon production declining by 76.4% at 700 mg kg-1 and being completely inhibited at 1500 mg kg-1. Integrated biochemical, histopathological, transcrip

Rhizobia independently adapt to soil and legume host environments, but soil conditions influence the abundance of high-quality partners.

UNLABELLED: Rhizobia live as free-living microorganisms in the soil and in association with legume hosts. Both environments exert selective pressures on rhizobia, influencing the reproductive success of individual strains (e.g., fitness). The soil, a heterogeneous and fluctuating environment, is often overlooked, and little is known about whether selection in the soil influences the outcomes of the rhizobium-legume mutualism. We exposed a mixture of 68 Sinorhizobium meliloti strains to soil-mediated selection using eight different treatments (temperature, osmotic, and texture perturbations) an

Site-specific associations between soil methylmercury accumulation and plant, soil, and hgcA-associated microbial modules across Chinese coastal wetlands.

Coastal wetlands retain mercury (Hg), but factors associated with methylmercury (MeHg) accumulation may differ among systems. We sampled 105 plots across seven Chinese coastal wetlands and measured total Hg (THg), MeHg, soil properties, plant attributes, and hgcA-associated microbial communities. We calculated the apparent Hg methylation ratio (%MeHg = 100 × MeHg/THg) and examined site-specific associations using ordination, PERMANOVA, Bayesian hierarchical models, variation partitioning, and within-site regressions. THg, MeHg, and %MeHg showed different spatial patterns. Minjiangkou had the h

Variable effects of biochar on soil greenhouse gas emissions: A meta-analysis of climate, soil, and biochar property interactions.

Biochar application has been widely proposed as a climate-smart soil management strategy; however, related biochar studies result on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions remain highly variable. Therefore, this study conducted a global meta-analysis to synthesize field-based evidence on the effects of biochar addition on soil carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, and to identify the key factors driving response heterogeneity under different environmental and management conditions. A total of 542 paired observations were compiled from published field experiments

A Comprehensive Review on Changes in Rhizosphere Soil Mediated by Microplastics: Soil Property, Microbial Gene Expression and Crop Growth.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution caused by agricultural film residues, organic fertilizer application, sewage irrigation, and atmospheric deposition has gradually become an unignorable interference factor to the sustainable development of the rhizosphere soil and crop in farmland. However, their specific impacts on the rhizosphere and crops remain unclear. Therefore, this review focuses on the current knowledge on the response mechanisms of rhizosphere soil and crops to MP contamination. The density of MPs is generally lower than that of soil mineral particles. Their substantial accumulation in s

Cross-infection by multiple soil-borne pathogens alters the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure of tobacco rhizosphere soil.

Soil-borne diseases of tobacco roots and stems, caused by pathogens including Ralstonia solanacearum (bacterial wilt), Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae (black shank), and root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.), represent critical threats to tobacco cultivation. However, information regarding alterations in rhizosphere soil properties and microbial communities following co-infection by multiple soil-borne pathogens remains limited for tobacco-growing regions in Luxi County, Honghe Prefecture, Yunnan Province, China. This study therefore investigated rhizosphere soils collected from healt

Relationships between soil health and dynamics of soil potential pathogenic microbiota in functional domains of Xi'an urban greenspaces, China.

Soil potential pathogenic microbiota exacerbate the environment and human health through invading normal tissues of the human body, but their distributions and interactions across functional domains in urban greenspaces are poorly understood. Herein, we collected soil samples from parkland and residential land to explore the relationships between soil health and the dynamics of soil potential pathogenic microbiota. Soil organic matter-associated properties, soil multifunctionality and health were significantly about 30 % higher in parkland, but soil stoichiometry including C/N, C/P, and C/N/P

Effect of liming on sulfate transformation and sulfur gas emissions in degraded vegetable soil treated by reductive soil disinfestation.

Reductive soil disinfestation (RSD), namely amending organic materials and mulching or flooding to create strong reductive status, has been widely applied to improve degraded soils. However, there is little information available about sulfate (SO4(2-)) transformation and sulfur (S) gas emissions during RSD treatment to degraded vegetable soils, in which S is generally accumulated. To investigate the effects of liming on SO4(2-) transformation and S gas emissions, two SO4(2-)-accumulated vegetable soils (denoted as S1 and S2) were treated by RSD, and RSD plus lime, denoted as RSD0 and RSD1, res

Interactive effects of soil acidity and fluoride on soil solution aluminium chemistry and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) root growth.

A greenhouse study was conducted to determine if concentrations of fluoride (F), which would be added to acid soils via P fertilisers, were detrimental to barley root growth. Increasing rates of F additions to soil significantly increased the soil solution concentrations of aluminium (Al) and F irrespective of the initial adjusted soil pH, which ranged from 4.25 to 5.48. High rates of F addition severely restricted root growth; the effect was more pronounced in the strongly acidic soil. Speciation calculations demonstrated that increasing rates of F additions substantially increased the concen

Long-term nitrogen amendments alter soil properties and diazotrophic communities in heavy metal-contaminated soils.

Mining activities cause severe nutrient depletion and ecological fragility, strongly constraining the restoration of contaminated soils. Prolonged disturbance disrupts soil nutrient pools and biogeochemical stability, with nitrogen (N) deficiency playing a pivotal role by limiting microbial growth, enzymatic activity, and nutrient cycling recovery. To assess the long-term impacts of N inputs, a three-year pot experiment was conducted using heavy metal-contaminated soils to examine changes in soil physicochemical properties, extracellular enzyme activities, and diazotrophic microbial communitie

Impact of soil moisture, rice straw, and nitrogen fertilizer on greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soils.

Soil moisture, carbon, and nitrogen are vital factors affecting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in agricultural soils. However, research on GHG dynamics across different soil moisture regimes, ranging from simultaneous flooding-to-upland conversion, transition phases, to continuous flooding, and their interaction with crop straw and nitrogen (N) fertilizer amendments remains limited. To address this research problem, we conducted a laboratory study to investigate the impact of water regimes, rice straw (Oryza sativa L.), and N fertilizer on GHGs. The addition of rice straw and fertilizer signif

Clay minerals alleviate lead contamination induced by soil speciation and oat translocation in neutral and saline soils.

Lead (Pb) contamination in agricultural soils poses a critical environmental challenge, necessitating the development of effective remediation strategies. Clay minerals are widely employed in soil remediation owing to their natural abundance and low cost. Nevertheless, their effectiveness is highly dependent on soil pH conditions. This study evaluated the efficacy of three clay minerals (palygorskite (Pa), sepiolite (Sep), bentonite (Be)) in remediating Pb-contaminated soils under neutral and saline conditions. The addition of clay minerals reduced total Pb by 12-26% in neutral soils, compared

Soil texture controls bioplastic-induced greenhouse gas emissions and carbon-nitrogen cycling in agricultural soils.

Bioplastics (BPs) are increasingly used in agriculture, yet their behavior in soil and effects on carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling depend strongly on soil conditions. This study evaluated the effects of three BPs (1% w/w; 400-700 μm) polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), polybutylene succinate (PBS), and polylactic acid (PLA) on soil C and N cycling, microbial activity, and greenhouse gas emissions in clayey and sandy agricultural soils during a 120-day incubation with four wetting-drying cycles (70-30% water-filled pore space). PHA produced the largest changes in soil biochemical processes includin

Potential Toxic Elements in Farm Soils and Vegetables of Northern Bangladesh: Impact on Soil Health and Human Safety.

Intensive vegetable production can increase the transfer of persistent toxic trace elements from agricultural soils into the food chain, particularly where agrochemical use, irrigation inputs, and local geochemical conditions are insufficiently characterized. This study was undertaken to assess toxic trace-metal contamination levels in soils and vegetables from two renowned vegetable-producing subdistricts-Shibganj and Kahaloo-in the Bogra district, Bangladesh. The study also estimated potential human health risks by evaluating the dietary intake of these elements. It measured Pb, Ni, Cd, and

Fertilisation of agricultural soils with municipal biosolids: Glyphosate and aminomethylphosphonic acid inputs to Québec field crop soils.

Municipal biosolids (MBS) are suggested to be abundant, sustainable, inexpensive fertilisers, rich in phosphorus and nitrogen. However, MBS can also contain glyphosate and phosphonates that can degrade to AMPA. Glyphosate-based herbicides (GBH) are used in field crops all over the world. Most glyphosate generally degrades within a few weeks, mainly as aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA). AMPA is more persistent than glyphosate, and can accumulate from one crop year to the next. AMPA is phytotoxic even to glyphosate-resistant crops. The aims of this study were to assess whether MBS applications c

Analog soil organo-ferrihydrite composites as suitable amendments for cadmium and arsenic stabilization in co-contaminated soils.

Remediation of CdAs co-contaminated soils has long been considered a difficult problem to solve, as Cd and As have distinctly different metallic characters. Amending contaminated soils with traditional single passivation materials may not always work well in the stabilization of both Cd and As. Here, we reported that analog soil organo-ferrihydrite composites made with either living or non-living organics (bacterial cells or humic acid) could achieve stabilization of both Cd and As in contaminated soils. BCR and Wenzel sequential extractions showed that organo-ferrihydrite, particularly at 1 w

A sustainable approach for bioremediation of secondary salinized soils: Studying remediation efficiency and soil nitrate transformation by bioaugmentation.

Nitrate is the main nitrogen source for plant growth, but it can also pollute the environment. A major cause of soil secondary salinization is the rising level of nitrates in the soil, which poses a threat to the sustainability and fertility of global greenhouse soils. Herein, Bacillus megaterium NCT-2 was used as a microbial agent to remove nitrate by bioaugmentation, and the remediation efficiency of secondary salinized soil in different degrees was evaluated. The findings showed that the highest nitrate removal rate of 62.76% was in a medium degree of secondary salinized soil. Moreover, the

Atmospheric CCl4 degradation in Antarctic tundra soils and the evaluation on its partial atmospheric lifetime with respect to soil.

Carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is an anthropogenic gas with a long atmospheric lifetime and can catalyze the destruction of stratospheric ozone. Natural soils are believed to be important and widespread sinks of atmospheric CCl4, although poorly characterized due to a limited number of measurements. In this study, for the first time in situ static-chamber measurements and laboratory-based incubations for CCl4 fluxes were conducted at coastal Antarctic tundra. Results showed that soil in remote Antarctica is also acting as a CCl4 sink, with an average uptake rate of -2.2 ± 0.6 nmol m-2 d-1, which
