Intracranial empyema is a rare but serious complication of sinusitis in children. Myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative syndromes (MMS), including juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia (JMML), can lead to immunosuppression, thus favouring infections. We report the case of a sphenoid sinogenic retro-clival extradural empyema in a 14-year-old female patient associated with JMML. Treatment consisted in an endonasal transphenoidal drainage of the empyema associated with intravenous antibiotherapy. The patient was thereafter enrolled in chemotherapeutic treatment with Azacitidine. The disease progressed to

Spontaneous nasal liquorrhea (SNL) is a pathological condition previously regarded as a casuistic one but increasingly frequently described in the current literature. The present review is focused on the causes of SNL, such as the anomalous anatomical structure of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. One of the variants of the anatomical structure is the so-called Sternberg canal. Its anatomical structure and formation in the course of embryonic development are described. The presence of the Sternberg canal in the adult subjects is considered to be the main cause underlying SNL and meningoe

UNLABELLED: Topographic relationship; sinusitis and paranasal sinus computed tomography.
BACKGROUND: The association between the symptoms of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and computed tomography (CT) findings is controversial, especially the topography of the symptoms and CT findings.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between topographic and overall paranasal CT findings with topographic and overall symptoms.
METHODS: This was a two-center study comprising 166 patients diagnosed with chronic sinusitis. All patients underwent CT scans and completed a questionnaire. The symptom scores a

Headaches secondary to paranasal sinus disease are a common problem in otolaryngology practice. However, short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with conjunctival injection and tearing (SUNCTs) are an extremely rare presentation of sinusitis. We report for the first time an unusual case of acute sinusitis presenting with SUNCTs-like symptoms with radiographically-proven isolated ipsilateral sphenoiditis, without any other intracranial pathologies. This case demonstrates an additional spectrum of acute sinusitis, which should be familiar to the otolaryngologist population.

A 29-year-old woman, who was diagnosed as Crouzon syndrome for which two cranio-facial surgeries had been performed as a child and at the age of 19, developed high fever, headache, and confusion for two days. She was admitted to our hospital. She was diagnosed as bacterial meningitis by cerebrospinal fluid examinations, and her condition was immediately improved by antibiotics. At the age of 23, she also suffered from bacterial meningitis caused by otitis media and sinusitis, and recovered by antibiotics with no sequela. Her cranial computed tomography showed sphenoid and ethmoid sinusitis, an

Foreign bodies of the sinuses are uncommon. Few reports exist in the English literature. Among these, the frontal and maxillary sinuses are most often involved. Ethmoid and sphenoid foreign bodies are rare and tend to present with chronic symptoms due to delayed diagnosis. We present a case of an acute presentation of a foreign body involving the orbit and ethmoid sinus in a 12-year-old male.

OBJECTIVES: Unlike Aspergillus sinusitis, sinus infections by mucormycosis are often invasive and have a lethal potential. We report two cases of chronic sinusitis with unilateral uncomplicated diagnosis of mucormycosis confirmed by pathology or mycology and discuss the therapeutic strategy.
PRESENTATION: Case 1) An immunocompetent patient with a right chronically sphenoid sinusitis uncomplicated underwent endonasal surgery in our institution. Rhizopus Oryzae was found on the surgical mycological specimen. The patient received no adjuvant medical therapy after surgery, because there were no i

OBJECTIVE: Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is an uncommon unilateral benign lesion that usually arises from the pleura. Recently, SFT has been described in many other locations, such as the mediastinum, head and neck, orbit and urogenital system. To date, only 21 cases of SFT arising from the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses have been reported in the literature.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe a case of SFT localized in the right nasal cavity with extension to the right ethmoid and sphenoid sinuses in a 43-year-old man who presented with a 6-month history of unilateral right-sided nasal obs

The relationship of paranasal sinusitis to optic neuritis remains controversial. One of the major sources of this controversy is that there are some reports of rhinogenic optic neuritis (RON) in patients with mild paranasal sinusitis or with almost normal paranasal sinuses. The Onodi cell is a posterior ethmoid cell which pneumatized far laterally and to some degree superiorly to the sphenoid sinus and is intimately associated with the optic nerve. Coronal CT scanning is requisite to detect the Onodi cell; when it is present, an image of the sphenoid sinus just as if it were divided into top a

Foreign bodies of the nose and its related sinuses are a common feature in otorhinolaryngology. Particularly in small children, one will find unilateral rhinorrhea as an initial symptom. In the adult, foreign bodies of the nose or paranasal sinuses are mainly caused by traumatic events. In the present paper the authors report two cases of foreign bodies of the paranasal sinuses. In one case the patient had been suffering from unilateral cephalgia for more than 40 years. The other patient had a short history prior to the extraction of the foreign body from the sphenoid sinuses. Diagnostic and t

AIMS: A number of studies link ear and paranasal sinus disorders even though correlation between the development of the paranasal sinuses and the mastoid has not been demonstrated clearly. In this study, we examined temporal bone computed tomography (CT) scans to calculate mastoid and paranasal sinus volumes using three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction in patients with unilateral nonsuppurative chronic otitis media (COM) and investigated whether there was a correlation between mastoid and paranasal sinus volumes.
METHODS: Of 85 patients with unilateral nonsuppurative COM, 51 patients who under

Introduction In sphenoid sinuses with ill-defined carotid bony landmarks, accidental injury of the internal carotid artery (ICA) remains one of the most challenging complications, which is particularly reported in the endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approaches (EETAs). Objectives To describe an anatomical model for the endoscopic orientation of the juxta-pituitary segment of the ICA in relation to the lateral opticocarotid recess (OCR) as a nearby bony landmark. Methods Dissection was performed progressively, simulating the EETA, in twenty fresh adult cadavers. After reducing the poste

Ninety-four patients were referred for CT examination of the paranasal sinuses within a five year period. Only 11 (11.7%) of them had intracranial complications. These include cerebral, subdural and epidural abscesses, frontal bone osteomyelitis. The maxillary and ethmoidal sinuses were mostly involved and can be implicated as the sinogenic causes of intracranial infections. Sphenoidal sinus was not involved in any of the patients.
