Splenic rupture in cattle is scarcely described in the literature. The aim of this work was to report the occurrence of splenic rupture in cattle in southern Brazil as well as to describe the causes of the condition. Between 2013 and 2022, 24 of the 1769 bovine necropsies performed in southern Brazil were due to splenic rupture, accounting for 1.36% of the diagnoses. Animals died due to hemoperitoneum caused by a rupture in the splenic capsule, typically associated with marked splenomegaly and a large hematoma between the capsule and the parenchyma. Clinical signs were described in a subset of…

INTRODUCTION: Splenic rupture most commonly results from a traumatic mechanism. Spontaneous splenic ruptures are a rare occurrence. This is an interesting and rare case of atraumatic splenic rupture (ASR) presented after sniffing cocaine.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: The patient presented with abdominal pain and tenderness with low hemoglobin on admission. The computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen showed possible spleen rupture with hemoperitoneum. An emergent laparotomy and total splenectomy was performed. The pathology confirmed splenomegaly and a large area of adhesion. Adjacent to the adh…

INTRODUCTION: Splenic rupture after laparoscopic surgery is a very rare complication. In this study, we report a case of a splenic laceration that occurred during a laparoscopic gastrostomy tube placement. The theorized mechanism in this case was acute disruption of a peri-splenic hematoma.
CASE REPORT: A 64-year-old African-American male presented after a motor vehicle accident with multiple injuries and was admitted to a surgical intensive care unit, where he declined from ICU days 6 through 11. The patient underwent tracheostomy and laparoscopic gastrostomy tube placement given his signifi…

UNLABELLED: Light-chain deposition disease is a rare paraproteinaemia characterized by deposition of monoclonal light-chain immunoglobulins with a non-amyloid structure, most frequently affecting the kidney. The authors present the case of a 58-year-old man admitted due to haemorrhagic shock caused by spontaneous splenic rupture. Investigation showed coagulopathy, homogeneous hepatomegaly with elevated cholestasis enzymes but normal bilirubinaemia, and a nephrotic syndrome with monoclonal kappa light chains. Liver and bone marrow biopsies revealed light-chain deposition disease. Splenic ruptur…

We report a case of splenic rupture in an 83-year-old woman presenting with symptoms concerning for upper gastrointestinal malignancy. CT imaging revealed marked gastric thickening and a 33×33 mm splenic metastasis, with subsequent gastroscopy demonstrating a large lesion at the gastro-oesophageal junction. While awaiting further investigation, the patient developed acute onset left upper quadrant pain, peritonism and hypovolaemic shock. Urgent CT imaging demonstrated a ruptured spleen with extensive haemoperitoneum, necessitating emergency splenectomy.

We present a case report of atraumatic splenic rupture secondary to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. A woman aged 36 years presented to a London teaching hospital's Accident and Emergency department with severe abdominal pain following a 6-day history of diarrhoea and vomiting, which had been under review by her GP. A CT scan demonstrated free intraperitoneal fluid and abnormal appearance of her spleen. Blood tests demonstrated EBV infection with positive serology and leucocytosis. She underwent a laparoscopic washout, which confirmed a subcapsular splenic haematoma that was initially manag…

INTRODUCTION: Here we present a case of atraumatic splenic rupture secondary to varicella infection requiring emergency splenectomy. The presentation was as would be expected for epstein barr virus (EBV) related splenic injury, which is well documented in the literature. Dermatological findings however suggested varicella zoster, and viral serology subsequen…

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous splenic rupture associated with anticoagulant use is a rare but potentially lethal disorder. Lack of prompt recognition can be associated with poor patient outcomes. The use of novel oral anticoagulants is becoming more common and thus consideration of this disorder while evaluating a patient who presents with abdominal pain while using these agents is extremely important. This is the first reported case of spontaneous splenic rupture associated with apixaban.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the clinical case of an 83-year-old white man who complained of sudden severe a…

We present the case of a 38-year-old male with an atraumatic splenic rupture, hemoperitoneum, and ileal volvulus following acute cocaine intoxication. Computed tomography showed a "whirl sign", a subcapsular splenic hematoma with suspected peripheral laceration, and diffuse hemoperitoneum. At laparotomy, the spleen was confirmed to be the source of bleeding and was removed. A nonreducible volvulus was found at the distal ileum, and this segment of small bowel was removed. The patient had an uneventful postoperative recovery.

Atraumatic splenic rupture is an uncommon complication of acute pancreatitis. This report describes the case of a 30-year-old man with acute pancreatitis and splenic vein thrombosis complicated by splenic rupture. The patient was admitted to the emergency department with pain in the upper abdomen that had been present for six hours and was associated with vomiting and sweating. He was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis of alcoholic etiology. Upon computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen, the pancreatitis was scored as Balthazar C grade, and a suspicious area of necrosis affecting 30% of the panc…

Thrombolysis is the gold standard of treatment for acute myocardial infarction (MI), however can be associated with haemorrhagic complications. To date, splenic rupture following thrombolysis has only been reported in those with an associated history of major trauma or splenomegaly. We report a case of a 47-year old female who developed splenic rupture following thrombolysis treatment with no history of trauma or splenomegaly. She received Tenecteplase therapy for an inferior MI, and six hours later she developed upper abdominal pain and hypotension. CT showed large haemoperitoneum with a larg…

Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare but life threatening complication of major liver resection with only five reported cases during major liver resection under hepatic vascular occlusion. We report two cases of splenic rupture during liver resection including the first case during portal triad clamping. In both patients, the hemorrhage was stopped by removing the vascular clamp. A splenectomy was performed in both patients and liver resection was completed under vascular clamping without complications. Although very rare, physicians should be aware of the possibility of splenic rupture durin…

Splenic arterial aneurysms (SAA) are rare and are usually atherosclerotic and/or related to pregnancy. Because pregnancy is the most important predisposing factor, the strong predilection of SAA for women is not surprising. The authors report a case of SAA rupture in a man with chronic pancreatitis as the predisposing factor. A 56-year-old man with abdominal pain and hematemesis was resuscitated and underwent endoscopy, but he died 18 hours later of massive hematemesis before definitive surgery could be carried out. At autopsy, there was chronic pancreatitis with fibrous adhesions tethering th
