Mitral valve repair by replacement of chordae tendineae with polytetrafluoroethylene sutures.

Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene sutures have been used for replacement of diseased chordae tendineae during reconstructive procedures on the mitral valve in 43 patients. There were 28 men and 15 women whose mean age was 55 years, range 21 to 76. Three fourths of the patients were in New York Heart Association class III or IV. Replacement of primary chordae tendineae of the anterior leaflet was performed with 4-0 or 5-0 polytetrafluoroethylene sutures. A double-armed suture was passed twice through the fibrous portion of the papillary muscle head and tied down. Each arm of the suture was broug…

Skin closure using staples and nylon sutures: a comparison of results.

A disposable skin stapler (Elite: Auto Suture UK Ltd) and Nylon vertical mattress sutures have been used for skin closure. The complications related to each method were evaluated in 129 wounds. There was a higher incidence of inflammation, discomfort on removal and spreading of the healing scar associated with staples. The only advantage of staples was speed of wound closure.

Ultrasound evaluation of sutures following cervical cerclage for incompetent cervix uteri.

This prospective study was designed to determine whether it is possible to visualize cerclage suture material by ultrasound and to evaluate the clinical usefulness of ultrasound examination after cervical cerclage during pregnancy. Ultrasound examinations demonstrated suture material in all patients in this study. The 5-mm-wide Mersiline tape suture, used in the Shirodkar procedure, was easier to visualize by ultrasound than the no. 2 nylon suture used in the McDonald procedure. Ultrasound examination can be helpful in evaluating the location and effectiveness of the sutures and in detecting p…

Adjustable suture versus nonadjustable suture surgery for childhood strabismus: A meta-analysis.

We compare the success rate and reoperation rate between adjustable suture (AS) and non-adjustable suture (NAS) in the treatment of strabismus in pediatric patients. We conducted a comprehensive search of scientific databases, including Pubmed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Register of Controlled Trials prior to November 30, 2023., aiming to identify eligible studies for meta-analysis that compared AS versus NAS in patients with strabismus. The differences observed between AS and NAS were quantified as risk differences (RDs) and risk ratios (RRs) along with 95 % confidence

On-site testing of sutured organs: An experimental set up to cyclically tighten sutures.

A number of surgical practices are aimed to compensate for tissue relaxation or weakened/atrophied muscles by means of suture prostheses/thread lifts. The success rate of these procedures is often very good in the short term, while it is quite variable among subjects and techniques in the middle-long term. Middle-long term failures are mostly related to suture distraction, loosening or wear, coming from repeated loading cycles. In this work, an experimental device to perform ex vivo tests on prosthetic sutures has been set up. An equine laryngoplasty has been used as a benchmark, being represe…

Septal anchoring suture: a key suture to improve the nasolabial symmetry in unilateral cheiloplasty.

Since 2008, a septal anchoring suture has been used in unilateral cleft lip repair at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in order to stabilize the lateral lip centrally. This study compared the symmetry of two groups of patients: those treated with and without an anchoring suture. Multiple standardized direct and photographic facial measurements were performed on the faces of all patients pre-cheiloplasty and at 5 years post-cheiloplasty. The degree of nasolabial symmetry was evaluated by comparing the ratios of measurements of the cleft vs. non-cleft sides. The ratio of change in these measurements

Treatment of Suture-related Complications of Buried-suture Double-eyelid Blepharoplasty in Asians.

BACKGROUND: Double-eyelid blepharoplasty is a popular aesthetic surgery in Asians. However, the buried suture technique is associated with complications related to implantation of the suture thread. The present study was performed to identify optimal surgical suture removal techniques in Japanese patients with suture-related complications after buried suture double-eyelid blepharoplasty. METHODS: This retrospective study included 210 upper eyelids of 116 consecutive Japanese patients who had undergone buried suture double-eyelid blepharoplasty at other clinics. All patients underwent suture r

Biomechanical comparison of screw-in suture anchor-suture combinations used for Bankart repair.

INTRODUCTION: Bankart repair laxity may contribute to pathologic joint instability. This biomechanical study compared two screw-in suture anchor-suture combinations under tensile loads. METHODS: Twelve pairs of scapulae were implanted with either a 3 mm diameter, 14 mm long poly-L/D-lactide suture anchor with a suture eyelet (Group 1) or a 3.1 mm diameter, 11 mm long polylactide suture anchor with a molded eyelet (Group 2). Constructs were cyclically loaded between 25 and 50 N with a 25 N load increase every 25 cycles. RESULTS: Group 2 displayed greater displacement at failure, had more spec

Comparison of suture materials and suture patterns for inverting intestinal anastomosis of the jejunum in the horse.

In 7 horses, 4 anastomoses were done in the small intestine in each, using the combinations of synthetic absorbable monofilament and multifilament suture materials with continuous- and interrupted-suture patterns in the serosubmucosal layer of a 2-layer inverting-suture technique. Horses were evaluated 30 days after the operation for adhesion formation, lumen diameter, evidence of chronic obstruction, and suture tract inflammation at the anastomosis. Postoperative obstruction occurred in 5 of the 7 horses, and 6 horses survived. One horse was euthanatized on postoperative day 6 after 48 hours

The effects of skin closure by using mattress sutures or intracutaneous absorbable sutures after the Karydakis flap surgery because of sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus. A comparative analysis.

OBJECTIVE: After the pilonidal sinus surgery, the complications such as skin maceration, local wound dehiscence, wound site infection and recurrence may complicate the surgery. We aimed to compare the patients, who had undergone Karydakis flap surgery and the skin closure of whom was made by using intracutaneous or mattress sutures, with respect to wound site complications and recurrence. METHODS: The files of 230 Karydakis flap surgery patients were analyzed retrospectively. The patients were invited for re-examination and the lacking data were collected. The patients were divided into 2 gro…

Biomechanical Comparison of Suture-Relay All-Suture Anchors and Conventional Suture Anchors for Posterior Medial Meniscus Root Repair in Porcine Models.

BACKGROUND: Posterior medial meniscus root (PMMR) tears (PMMRTs) can be repaired using various techniques to promote healing. However, the biomechanical properties of suture-relay all-suture anchor (ASA) versus conventional suture anchor (CSA) and loop-locking transtibial pullout (TTP) have not been well established. PURPOSE: To compare the biomechanical properties of PMMR repairs using suture-relay ASA, CSA, and loop-locking TTP. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: A total of 33 fresh-frozen porcine knee joints with intact medial menisci were randomly divided into 3 groups,

Pilot development with preliminary validation of a skills suturing score: essential suturing skills.

INTRODUCTION: Suturing skills are paramount for all surgeons. To date, there is no unified validated score that correlates with basic suturing abilities. We sought to develop and validate a score (Essential Suturing Skills-ESS) to evaluate basic suturing performance. METHODS: The ESS testing comprises two exercises. The applicant performs seven simple interrupted stitches in a dedicated foam base and follows with a running suture in a carpet-like material (seven throws). The time to perform the sutures and the surgical skills were compiled and combined through a novel mathematical equation, t…

Postoperative outcome of palatine tonsillectomy by tonsil pillar suture with knot-free suture.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative haemorrhage following palatine tonsillectomy occurs in 5-14% of cases. Since 2021, our department has used knot suturing with 3-0 Vicryl, and from 2023, continuous suturing with the V-Loc™ closure device to reduce suture time. While knot suturing is reported to reduce postoperative bleeding and pain, no studies have compared outcomes between different suture methods. AIMS: This study retrospectively analysed postoperative bleeding, pain, and complications in 125 patients undergoing palatine tonsillectomy, with or without sutures. METHODS: Patients aged ≥15 years who…

A Continuous Suture Anastomosis Outperforms a Simple Interrupted Suture Anastomosis in Esophageal Elongation.

INTRODUCTION: Long-gap esophageal atresia represents a distinct entity among the esophageal atresia spectrum. In many patients, achieving a reasonable anastomosis depends on some millimeters of tissue. We aimed to determine what effect the suturing technique would have on esophageal ex vivo elongation as it may determine the strength of a primary anastomosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In an analysis of porcine esophagi from animals for slaughter (100-120 days old with a weight of 100-120 kg), we determined esophageal length gain of simple continuous and simple interrupted suture anastomoses subj
