BACKGROUND: Patients with New World cutaneous leishmaniasis (NWCL) caused by Leishmania Viannia are treated with parenteral sodium stibogluconate (SbV) to reduce the risk of development of mucocutanous leishmaniasis. BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a disease caused by leishmania species. Intralesional sodium stibogluconate (SSG) has been considered the first line therapy for localized cutaneous leishmaniasis. There is still a need for more effective and less time-consuming therapeutic methods for this condition.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate if the combination of intramuscular (IM) SSG or oral ketoconazole with intralesional (IL) SSG would be more effective than the intralesional SSG given alone in the treatment of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis.

The severity of cutaneous leishmaniasis may be determined by host immunity, parasite virulence, and host or vector behavior. We performed a multivariate analysis to identify the main causes of the variability in clinical symptoms, response to treatment, and parasite isolation rate among Peruvian patients. INTRODUCTION: Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is widely accepted as an important part of staging cutaneous malignant melanoma. Hybrid single photon emission computed tomography and computed tomography (SPECT/CT) may identify additional SLN and provide important information to the surgeon performing SLN biopsy. We report our experience at a major referral centre for melanoma surgery.

One hundred and nine cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis were referred to Dermatology unit, Tripoli Central Hospital from 24 localities in north-west Libya during the period from September to December 1994. Clinically most of the lesions were multiple and distributed on the uncovered parts of the body, and the size ranged from 1 to 5 cm. In diameter. The prevalence of infection was 65.3% among age groups 1-30 year old. Patients responded well to the treatment with sodium stibagluconate.

In a preoperative study to identify accurately metastases to the lymph nodes within the pelvis and retroperitoneum, the three imaging techniques of pelvic interstitial lymphoscintigraphy, bipedal lymphangiography and computer tomography (CT) scanning were compared in 69 patients with carcinoma of the cervix uteri or rectum. A randomized placebo-controlled trial treating cutaneous lesions due to Leishmania major with intralesionnel glucantime, was conducted in El Guettar between december 1994 and June 1995, in order to assess efficacy of this therapy under field conditions.
