This study aimed to establish whether it was practical to perform sciatic nerve block by the anterior approach in a group of children of different ages and weights. A total of 82 blocks were performed of which 78 (95.2%) were judged to have been successful. The technique of the block differed slightly from that used in adult practice, in that great reliance was placed on the loss of resistance felt as the needle point passed through the thigh muscles into the sciatic neurovascular compartment. Various benefits claimed for methadone maintenance in the treatment of opioid drug takers are reviewed. It is said to stop illicit drug use, maintain treatment contact, reduce morbidity, mortality and crime, and improve social adjustment. Little firm evidence is found to support these claims. A total of forty-five guinea pigs were injected subcutaneously with 0.1 cu cm carboneum tetracholoratum each and were infected with Yersinia enterocolitica serotype 9. Follow-up of 108 opiate addicts for a period of six to seven years showed that 35 were still being prescribed opiates, 25 were off drugs, 19 were dead, and for 29 it was not certain whether they were on or off drugs. Most patients who came off drugs did so in the first two years after notification to the Home Office. Clearly treatment is more likely to be successful if given early in the life history of the addict, when it is appropriate to give treatment based on withdrawal of drugs rather than substitution.

BACKGROUND: Sexual transmissibility of HIV among young drug users in China has been investigated in few studies. The objective of this study was to examine the role of sexual transmission on HIV infection among injection drug users (IDUs) and noninjection drug users (NIDUs).
