Non-specific immunity in patients with primary anogenital warts treated with interferon alpha plus cryotherapy or cryotherapy alone.

Combination treatment of primary anogenital warts with subcutaneous interferon alpha 2a plus cryotherapy was no more efficacious than cryotherapy alone. Patients with primary AG warts showed no in vitro or in vivo suppression of non-specific immunity. In patients treated with interferon plus cryotherapy non-specific cellular immunity was stimulated, both in vitro and in vivo compared with patients treated with cryotherapy alone.

Conization for CIN associated with human papillomavirus infection.

We report results of follow-up by PAP smears and colposcopy in 116 women treated since 1981 by conization for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia with human papillomavirus infection (HPV-CIN). The mean follow-up time was 31.9 (SD 19) months. Preoperative diagnosis was HPV-CIN II (with extension into the endocervix) in 11 cases and HPV-CIN III in 103 cases; two diagnostic conizations were performed. The histological examination of the cone biopsies showed complete excision of CIN in 109 cases (94%). Three patients underwent hysterectomy after conization; one had microinvasion in the cone biopsy,

The Lincoff temporary balloon buckle.

The Lincoff temporary balloon buckle is an equally effective alternative to more conventional techniques in the management of selected retinal detachments. We used this technique in the management of 45 selected primary retinal detachments operated on since Nov. 22, 1980. Initial complete retinal flattening was achieved in 42 eyes (93%). Two of the three eyes that initially did not show complete flattening ultimately went on to do well without further surgery. Redetachment occurred in three of the five aphakic eyes (60%) and in four of the 36 phakic eyes (11%). None of the retinas in the four

Application of percutaneous cryoablation for pulmonary nodules and influence in pulmonary function.

BACKGROUND: Cryoablation has been reported as a non-surgical option for early-stage lung cancer and a palliative cytoreductive therapy for advanced disease and pulmonary metastases; however, evidence remains relatively limited. PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of cryoablation in patients with different types of pulmonary nodules and to identify appropriate clinical scenarios for its application. METHOD: This retrospective study included 94 patients with 107 pulmonary nodules who underwent CT-guided percutaneous cryoablation between May 2022 and May 2024. Patients were classified

Phrenic nerve injury after atrial fibrillation ablation: different recovery courses among cryoballoon, laser balloon, and radiofrequency ablation.

BACKGROUND: Phrenic nerve injury (PNI) is one of the common complications in atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation, which often recovers spontaneously. However, the course of its recovery has not been examined fully, especially in regard to the different ablation methods. We sought to compare the recovery course of PNI in cryoballoon, laser balloon, and radiofrequency ablation. METHODS: This multicenter retrospective study analyzed 355 patients who suffered from PNI during AF ablation. PNI occurred during cryoballoon ablation (CB group) and laser balloon ablation (LB group) for a pulmonary vein i

The influence of iatrogenic atrial septal defect on the prognosis of patients with atrial fibrillation between cryoablation and radiofrequency ablation.

OBJECTIVE: The present study was to compare the incidence of septal defect (SD) in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) who received radiofrequency ablation or cryoablation. METHODS: A total of 293 AF patients were performed with radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation. Cardiac ultrasonography was performed to calculate left atrial diameter (LAD), left atrial ejection fraction (LAEF%), strain rate (SR), left ventricular systolic (SRs), left ventricular diastolic (SRe), and left atrial systole (SRa) before surgery, 3 months and 1 year after surgery. The patients were followed up to observe

Intraoperative cryoablation in late pulmonary valve replacement for tetralogy of Fallot.

Ventricular tachyarrhythmia (VT) is a major cause of late morbidity and mortality in patients who underwent surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot. The majority of VTs are monomorphic macro-reentrant VT (MVT) and depend on slow conducting areas of diseased myocardium bordered by unexcitable tissue (anatomical isthmuses). Myocardial fibrosis due to surgical incisions, patch material and valve annuli are typical boundaries of anatomical isthmuses (AI). The conducting myocardium between the pulmonary valve and ventricular septum defect patch is called isthmus 3, and the majority of MVTs originate

Differences in the electrophysiological findings of repeat ablation between patients who first underwent cryoballoon ablation and radiofrequency catheter ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

INTRODUCTION: Several studies have revealed that second-generation cryoballoon (CB)-based pulmonary vein (PV) isolation is noninferior to radiofrequency (RF)-based PV isolation for patients with drug-refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). However, electrophysiological differences in repeat ablation remain unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS: This study examined electrophysiological differences during the repeat ablation between patients who first underwent RF catheter ablation and CB ablation; PV durability and non-PV AF foci were assessed for these patients. We enrolled 919 and 491 patient

Efficacy of vertebral cryoablation and immunotherapy in a patient with metastatic renal cell carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: In metastatic renal cell carcinoma, immunotherapy is the only treatment modality associated with a complete and durable response, but severe toxicity limits its usefulness. If toxicity could be eliminated, immunotherapy might be an effective treatment for metastatic renal cell carcinoma. We present a case of a patient with spinal metastatic renal cell carcinoma treated with total en bloc spondylectomy and reconstruction using a cryo-treated tumor-bearing bone graft; the patient demonstrated an antitumor cryoimmunological response. CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old Japanese man pres

Cryoballoon ablation of persistent atrial fibrillation: feasibility and safety of left atrial roof ablation with generation of conduction block in addition to antral pulmonary vein isolation.

AIMS: Although the generation of linear lesions by ablation improves success rates in patients with persistent atrial fibrillation (AF), the procedure has been considered unsuitable for cryoablation balloon catheter technologies. We developed a technique for linear ablations, using second-generation cryoballoon technology. METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a single-arm, prospective study in 76 patients with persistent AF treated consecutively at our centre. Cryoablation was performed using a 28 mm second-generation cryoballoon. The first cryoenergy application was performed in close proximity to

Junctional Ectopic Tachycardia Localization and Procedural Approach using Cryoablation.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic junctional ectopic tachycardia (JET) may still be difficult to control with antiarrhythmic therapy. Transcatheter ablation can be challenging and may be associated with a high risk of unintended atrioventricular block. The objective of this manuscript is to report the procedural technique, the location of the successful ablation, and the procedural characteristics while utilizing 3D mapping for cryoablation of JET. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on all patients who had undergone cryothermal ablation for the treatment of JET at a single center. Patient,

PlasmaBlade vs. cold dissection tonsillectomy: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled study in adults.

We conducted a prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled clinical study to compare the efficacy and safety of the PlasmaBlade device and cold dissection for adult tonsillectomy. Our study group was made up of 20 patients-12 men and 8 women, aged 18 to 50 years (mean: 27.1)-who were undergoing a bilateral tonsillectomy. Each patient had one randomly chosen tonsil removed by the PlasmaBlade and the other by cold instrumentation. We compared the duration of surgery, the amount of intraoperative blood loss, the number of sutures required, the status of tonsillar fossa wound healing at 7 an

New and traditional surgical approaches to hidradenitis suppurativa.

When the prevention of new lesions fails and when medical therapy of established and growing lesions is ineffective, surgery is the accepted method of dealing with hidradenitis suppurativa/acne inversa. The rationale and preferred techniques of mini-unroofing using a biopsy punch, deroofing using scissors, electrosurgery or laser, and classical wide excision and closure are discussed. The situation in which incision and drainage is considered for temporary pain relief would be best considered an opportunity for deroofing, as illustrated in the accompanying online videos.

Pulmonary vein measurements on pre-procedural CT/MR imaging can predict difficult pulmonary vein isolation and phrenic nerve injury during cryoballoon ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the hypothesis that pulmonary vein (PV) measurements on pre-procedural CT/MR imaging can predict difficulty in isolation and phrenic nerve (PN) injury during cryoballoon ablation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF). METHODS: Consecutive patients with paroxysmal AF who had pre-procedural CT/MRI and underwent cryoballoon ablation as part of a randomized trial were studied. Imaging was anonymized for blinded analysis of: (1) maximum ostial diameter, (2) minimum ostial diameter, (3) ostial area and (4) ratio of maximum over minimum ostial diameter (eccentricity index). Regular atrial tachycardias following pulmonary vein isolation for paroxysmal atrial fibrillation: a retrospective comparison between the cryoballoon and conventional focal tip radiofrequency techniques.

PURPOSE: Occurrence of atrial tachycardias (ATs) following radiofrequency (RF) pulmonary vein (PV) isolation for the treatment of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) is a frequent complication. Cryoballoon (CB) ablation might create more homogeneous and demarcated lesions than traditional point by point RF approach, hypothetically leading to a lower incidence of ATs. Our aim is to compare incidence and mechanism of regular ATs occurring after ablation of PAF by means of circumferential point by point RF vs CB ablation. METHODS: Two hundred eighty-six consecutive patients undergoing a first P
