P300 Following Four Voluntarily Regulated Yoga Breathing Practices and Breath Awareness.

Attention was influenced by yoga breathing in previously published research. Each yoga breathing practice uniquely modifies specific breath characteristics. Differences in the study designs, assessment methods and interventions resulted in difficulty in comparing effects between yoga breathing practices. This study aimed (i) to compare four yoga breathing practices on attention using an auditory oddball task and (ii) to determine cardiac autonomic activity associated with attention using heart rate variability. P300 event related potential was recorded simultaneously with heart rate variabilit

Tradeoffs between ventilation, air mixing, and passenger density for the airborne transmission risk in airport transportation vehicles.

Airport transportation vehicles, such as buses, aerotrains, and shuttles, provide important passenger transfer services in airports. This study quantitatively investigated COVID-19 aerosol infection risk and identified acceptable operational conditions, such as passenger occupancy rates and duration of rides, given the performance of vehicle ventilation. The greatest risk to the largest number of passengers is from an index case whose exhaled breath would take the longest time to exit the vehicle. The study identified such a case based on ventilation patterns, and it tracked the spread of vira

NMR metabolomic and microarray-based transcriptomic data integration identifies unique molecular signatures of hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) is an immune-mediated granulomatous interstitial lung disease (ILD) that results from repeated inhalation of certain antigens. Despite major advances in research, pathophysiology of the disease remains poorly understood. The present study combines metabolomic and transcriptomic data to determine alterations in HP subjects as compared with healthy controls. Metabolic signatures were identified in serum, exhaled breath condensate (EBC) and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of HP patients using proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) metabolomics. The expressio

CCL4 Functions as a Biomarker of Type 2 Airway Inflammation.

Eosinophilic airway inflammatory disease is associated with bronchial asthma, with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) typical of refractory type 2 airway inflammation. CCL4 produced at local inflammatory sites is involved in them via the accumulation and activation of type 2 inflammatory cells, including eosinophils. The detailed mechanism of CCL4 production remains unclear, and also the possibility it could function as a biomarker of type 2 airway inflammation remains unresolved. In this study, we evaluated CCL4 mRNA expression and production via the TSLP receptor (TSLPR) and toll-lik

Impact on quitting smoking of cognitive impairment in stroke patients.

INTRODUCTION: Smoking is a well-established risk factor for strokes, leading to a high incidence of cognitive deficits. Since the impact of cognitive impairment on the effectiveness of interventions for smoking cessation is not yet known, we considered important to assess it. METHODS: We compared, from April 2012 to November 2015, the success rate of quitting smoking in two groups of acutely hospitalised adult smokers. The first group consisted of stroke patients (SP, n = 54) with lesions confirmed by cerebral imaging. The second used as a control group (NSP, n = 38), included patients hospit

Textile Knitted Stretch Sensors for Wearable Health Monitoring: Design and Performance Evaluation.

The advancement of smart textiles has led to significant interest in developing wearable textile sensors (WTS) and offering new modalities to sense vital signs and activity monitoring in daily life settings. For this, textile fabrication methods such as knitting, weaving, embroidery, and braiding offer promising pathways toward unobtrusive and seamless sensing for WTS applications. Specifically, the knitted sensor has a unique intermeshing loop structure which is currently used to monitor repetitive body movements such as breathing (microscale motion) and walking (macroscale motion). However,

Emission Rates of Volatile Organic Compounds from Humans.

Human-emitted volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are mainly from breath and the skin. In this study, we continuously measured VOCs in a stainless-steel environmentally controlled climate chamber (22.5 m3, air change rate at 3.2 h-1) occupied by four seated human volunteers using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Experiments with human whole body, breath-only, and dermal-only emissions were performed under ozone-free and ozone-present conditions. In addition, the effect of temperature, relative humidity, clothing type, and age was

Risk assessment of COVID infection by respiratory droplets from cough for various ventilation scenarios inside an elevator: An OpenFOAM-based computational fluid dynamics analysis.

Respiratory droplets-which may contain disease spreading virus-exhaled during speaking, coughing, or sneezing are one of the significant causes for the spread of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The droplet dispersion depends on the surrounding air velocity, ambient temperature, and relative humidity. In a confined space like an elevator, the risk of transmission becomes higher when there is an infected person inside the elevator with other individuals. In this work, a numerical investigation is carried out in a three-dimensional domain resembling an elevator using OpenFoam. Three different mode

Post-transplant Schizophyllum commune abscess in a pediatric patient with chronic granulomatous disease.

Schizophyllum commune is a widely distributed basidiomycete fungus that occasionally causes sinusitis or allergic bronchopulmonary mycosis. The invasive infection mostly occurs in immunocompromised adults. The number of reports on S. commune infection have increased in this decade due to the expansion of diagnostic techniques and awareness in clinical practice. However, S.commune infection in patients with primary immunodeficiencies has not been reported yet. Here, we described S. commune-abscesses developed in the brain and lung of a boy with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) after allogeni

Zinc and vitamin C deficiencies associate with poor pulmonary function in children with persistent asthma.

BACKGROUND: One of the pathophysiologic mechanisms involved in asthma is the increase in oxidative stress. Zinc (Zn), vitamin C (VC), and vitamin E (VE) have antioxidant functions. However, the status of oxidative stress, Zn, VC, and VE in Thai asthmatic children have not been reported. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the status of oxidative stress, Zn, VC, VE, pulmonary function tests, and airway inflammation in Thai asthmatic children with persistent asthma. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, the data was collected from asthmatic children aged 7-17 years. The plasma PGF2α concentratio

Understanding the key issues in the treatment of uncontrolled persistent asthma with type 2 inflammation.

Asthma is a complex respiratory disease that varies in severity and response to treatment. Several asthma phenotypes with unique clinical and inflammatory characteristics have been identified. Endotypes, based on distinct molecular profiles, help to further elucidate the heterogeneity within asthma. Type 2 inflammation, involving both the innate (type 2 innate lymphoid cell) and adaptive (T-helper type 2 cells) immune systems, underpins the complex pathophysiology of chronic inflammation in asthma, as well as the presence of comorbid disease (e.g. chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps, alle

The role of exosomes from BALF in lung disease.

Exosomes are released from a variety of immune cells and nonimmune cells, the phospholipid vesicle bilayer membrane structure actively secreted into tissues. Recently, exosomes were demonstrated to be effectively delivered proteins, cholesterol, lipids, and amounts of DNA, mRNA, and noncoding RNAs to a target cell or tissue from a host cell. These can be detected in blood, urine, exhaled breath condensates, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), ascites, and cerebrospinal fluid. BALF is a clinical examination method for obtaining alveolar cells and biochemical components, reflecting changes in t

Monitoring lung injury with particle flow rate in LPS- and COVID-19-induced ARDS.

In severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a life-prolonging treatment, especially among COVID-19 patients. Evaluation of lung injury progression is challenging with current techniques. Diagnostic imaging or invasive diagnostics are risky given the difficulties of intra-hospital transportation, contraindication of biopsies, and the potential for the spread of infections, such as in COVID-19 patients. We have recently shown that particle flow rate (PFR) from exhaled breath could be a noninvasive, early detection method for ARDS during mec

Firefighters' occupational exposure: Contribution from biomarkers of effect to assess health risks.

Firefighting is physically and physiologically exhausting besides encompassing exposure to toxic fire emissions. Biomonitoring studies from the past five years have been significantly contributing to characterize the occupational-related health effects in this group of professionals and to improve risk assessment. Therefore, this study gathers and critically discusses the most characterized biomarkers of effect (oxidative stress, DNA and protein damage, stress hormones, inflammation, and vascular, lung, and liver injury), including those potentially more promising to be explored in future stud
