BACKGROUND: Congenital birth defects remain a leading cause of mortality and disability in younger populations aged <14 years, however, little comprehensive or recent evidence of the burden of congenital birth defect and its subtypes are available globally. Additionally, the extent of regional health inequality and the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on congenital birth defects remain unclear. This study leverages 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) data to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the global epidemiological profile, health inequality, and the repercuss

Background and Objectives: The pancreas, ensconced within the abdominal cavity, requires a plethora of sophisticated imaging modalities for its comprehensive evaluation, with ultrasonography serving as a primary investigative technique. A myriad of pancreatic pathologies, encompassing pancreatic neoplasia and a spectrum of inflammatory diseases, are detectable through these imaging strategies. Nevertheless, the intricate anatomical confluence and the pancreas's deep-seated topography render the visualization and accurate diagnosis of its pathologies a formidable endeavor. The objective of our

BACKGROUND: Approximately 1 in 5 children and adolescents live with chronic pain, with musculoskeletal (MSK) pain being one of the most prevalent subtypes. Unfortunately, some studies show that less than half of youth (<18 years) experience improvements with existing evidence-based treatments. Self-report measures-the current gold standard for monitoring the pain experience-are limited in their use as a single point-of-care assessment and their vulnerability to recall bias. The ubiquitous adoption of wearable technology presents a promising solution for improved monitoring of the pain experien

INTRODUCTION: Tendon injuries are prevalent musculoskeletal conditions in clinical settings, affecting various regions such as the rotator cuff tendons, forearm flexor/extensor tendons, finger flexor tendons, and Achilles tendon. While surgery is an effective treatment, it often fails to balance intrinsic and extrinsic healing processes, leading to abnormal cell activation, proliferation, and migration, resulting in collagen deposition at the injury site. This pathological fibrosis causes severe peritendinous adhesions, posing a therapeutic challenge. Traditional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory

BACKGROUND: Myofascial pain remains an underdiagnosed contributor to musculoskeletal pain conditions, including plantar heel pain, which is the most common source of foot pain. The current standard for diagnosing myofascial pain is a clinical examination using manual palpation. However, this approach lacks quantitative thresholds for precise assessment of myofascial pain, highlighting the need for validated biomarkers.
OBJECTIVE: This protocol describes the development of a diagnostic imaging biosignature of myofascial pain using both ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging to differentiate

BACKGROUND: Patellofemoral pain (PFP) is a common musculoskeletal disorder characterized by persistent knee pain, often without any structural abnormalities. Conservative treatments, particularly exercise therapy, are widely recommended; however, adherence remains generally low, and full recovery is often not achieved. Psychological interventions can aid in symptom management; however, studies integrating cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which is known to be effective for chronic pain, with exercise therapy for patients with PFP are limited. This study examined the impact of MORA Cure (PFP)

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF 1) is an autosomal-dominant tumor predisposition genetic disease affecting approximately 1 in 3000 live births. The condition could present various manifestations ranging from skin abnormalities to neurological tumors. The musculoskeletal system could also be frequently affected, and scoliosis is the most common orthopedic manifestation. Characterized by the early-onset and rapid progression tendency, NF 1-related dystrophic scoliosis presented discrepancies from idiopathic scoliosis in terms of natural history, clinical features, and management outcome

Here, we present evidence that Lrp6, a coreceptor for Wnt ligands, is required for the normal formation of somites and bones. By positional cloning, we demonstrate that a novel spontaneous mutation ringelschwanz (rs) in the mouse is caused by a point mutation in Lrp6, leading to an amino acid substitution of tryptophan for the evolutionarily conserved residue arginine at codon 886 (R886W). We show that rs is a hypomorphic Lrp6 allele by a genetic complementation test with Lrp6-null mice, and that the mutated protein cannot efficiently transduce signals through the Wnt/beta-catenin pathway. BACKGROUND: Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are at risk of developing COVID-19 due to underlying immune abnormalities and regular use of immunosuppressant medications. We aimed to evaluate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies in patients with SLE with or without previous COVID-19-related symptoms or RT-PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection.
METHODS: For this analysis, we included patients with SLE from two cohorts based in New York City: the Web-based Assessment of Autoimmune, Immune-Mediated and Rheumatic Patients during the COVID-19 pandemic (WARCOV) study; and the NYU Lu

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious global health concern that poses a significant threat to human life. Beyond its direct impact, diabetes substantially increases the risk of developing severe complications such as hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and musculoskeletal disorders like arthritis and osteoporosis. The field of diabetes classification has advanced significantly with the use of diverse data modalities and sophisticated tools to identify individuals or groups as diabetic. But the task of predicting diabetes prior to its onset, particularly through the use of longitudinal multi-m

BACKGROUND: It is difficult to diagnose and grade bony stress injury (BSI) in the athletic adolescent population without advanced imaging. Radiographs are recommended as a first imaging modality, but have limited sensitivity and, even when findings are present, advanced imaging is often recommended.
HYPOTHESIS: It was hypothesized that the significance of radiographs is underestimated for BSI in the adolescent with positive clinical examination and history findings.
STUDY DESIGN: Case series.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4.
METHODS: A total of 80 adolescent athletes with a history of shin pain

Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), as one of the most prevalent complications of diabetes, leads to significant pain and financial burden to patients. Currently, there was no effective treatment for DPN since the glucose control was just a prevention and the drug therapy only relieved the DPN pain. As a non-invasive physical therapy, low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is utilized in the musculoskeletal and nerve injuries therapy. Studies revealed that LIPUS could regenerate nerves by the mechanical stimulation via oxidative stress pathway, which was thought as the important factor for
