Point-based superimposition of a digital dental model on to a three-dimensional computed tomographic skull: an accuracy study in vitro.

We investigated the accuracy of point-based superimposition of a digital dental model on to a 3-dimensional computed tomographic (CT) skull with intact dentition. The physical model was scanned by CT to give a virtual skull model, and a plaster dental model was taken and laser-scanned to give a digital dental model. Three different background investigators were recruited and calibrated to make the point-based superimposition, and afterwards were asked to repeat 5 superimpositions each. Five bone-to-tooth measurements for the maxilla and 6 for the mandible were selected to indicate the relation

Periodontal consequences of mandibular incisor proclination during presurgical orthodontic treatment in Class III malocclusion patients.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that periodontal changes are similar between proclined and minimal-changed mandibular incisor position groups during presurgical orthodontic treatment for Class III orthognathic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The following measurements were performed before and after presurgical orthodontic treatment of 75 patients (proclination group, 39 subjects; minimal-change group, 36 subjects): clinical crown length, sulcus and bone probing depths, and width of attached gingiva from clinical examination; infradentale-to-MP (perpendicular distance of infradentale to man

Autotransplantation with simultaneous sinus floor elevation.

INTRODUCTION: Autotransplantation of the third molar is a viable option for replacing missing molars and has some benefits. This case report showed successful autotransplantation with simultaneous sinus floor elevation and implant installation. METHODS: The patient suffered a loss of maxillary molars and had a pneumatized maxillary sinus under the area in need of restorative treatment. Instead of implant installation in the molar area, we performed autotransplantation of the mandibular third molar with simultaneous sinus floor elevation with the aid of computer-aided rapid prototyping model.

A clinical and radiographic study of 25 autotransplanted third molars.

This paper is a report on 25 autotransplantations of third molars with complete root formations. The study consists of 23 patients in whom 25 third molars were transplanted. The mean age was 29.6 years (range 20-54). In nine cases third molars were directly transplanted into the new socket. In 11 cases the sockets were widened and made deeper with a bur. In five cases the recipient beds were made by splitting osteotomy of the alveolar region. The transplanted third molars were stabilized with silk sutures, resin, wire splint or circumferential wiring for 1-6 weeks. Two-three weeks after transp

Pulp survival and hard tissue formation subsequent to dental trauma. A clinical and histological study of uncomplicated crown fractures and luxation injuries.

Traumatic injuries in children and adolescents are a common problem, and the prevalence of such injuries has increased over the last 10-20 years. The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate long-term results following uncomplicated crown fractures and luxations involving subsequent pulp canal obliteration. A total of 198 patients with 488 injured permanent teeth were available for clinical examination (15 year follow-up), of which 102 also answered a questionnaire and were interviewed before oral examination. Further, 82 permanent incisors presenting with pulp canal obliteration (

Interdisciplinary approach for increasing the vertical dimension of occlusion in an adult patient with several missing teeth.

This case report describes the interdisciplinary treatment of a 39-year-old man with several missing teeth (including both maxillary lateral incisors), Class II malocclusion, deep overbite, and significant mandibular midline deviation. The treatment plan included placement of endosseous dental implants early in the orthodontic treatment to increase the vertical dimension of the occlusion for deepbite correction, canine substitution for the missing lateral incisors, and distalization of the mandibular right buccal segment with the aid of a temporary anchorage device.

A Case Against the Implant.

It is incumbent upon our profession to reevaluate our preference for routinely replacing a missing single maxillary incisor, especially a maxillary lateral incisor, with a dental implant in a young adult. The dental literature is replete with beautiful restorative results using implants in this area, but there is minimal discussion regarding the long-term consequences of this treatment. The maxillary lateral incisor is one of the most commonly missing teeth due to agenesis, and it is also one of the most common teeth to be lost due to trauma in the developing child.1 Therefore, the decision fo

Evaluation of the effects of the small intestine submucosa biological membrane on guided bone regeneration and early loading of dental implants in the maxillary anterior region: A randomized controlled trial.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Whether an early loading strategy can be applied to a single maxillary anterior implant with insufficient bone volume is debatable. Moreover, the clinical effect of using a small intestine submucosa (SIS) biological membrane in guided bone regeneration (GBR) surgery in such clinical scenarios is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to determine the effectiveness and safety of an early loading strategy for patients who have undergone dental implant placement and GBR surgery for a missing maxillary anterior tooth and to clarify the effects

Rotations of teeth-a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Rotations are frequently evaluated through various assessment methods of crowding and arch dimension, with relatively few studies discussing the extent or direction of rotations and even fewer addressing the reliability of such assessments. This systematic review aims to comprehensively analyze existing classification systems for rotated teeth and assess rotation in anterior and posterior teeth, its clinical applicability, and its impact on retention and relapse. SEARCH METHODS: Two investigators conducted a comprehensive search in six databases, namely, PubMed, Scopus, Ovid, LILA

A small venomous reptile from the Late Triassic (Norian) of the southwestern United States.

Reptile feeding strategies encompass a wide variety of diets and accompanying diversity in methods for subduing prey. One such strategy, the use of venom for prey capture, is found in living reptile clades like helodermatid (beaded) lizards and some groups of snakes, and venom secreting glands are also present in some monitor lizards and iguanians. The fossil record of some of these groups shows strong evidence for venom use, and this feeding strategy also has been hypothesized for a variety of extinct reptiles (e.g., archosauromorphs, anguimorphs, and a sphenodontian). However, evidence of sy

A finite element study on the risk of bone loss around posterior short implants in an atrophic mandible.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the risk of bone loss around single short molar crown-supporting implants in an atrophic mandible. METHODS: Implants of different lengths (L = 4 or 6 mm) and diameters (Ø = 4.1 or 4.8 mm) were placed in the molar area of an atrophic mandible. Additional control mandible models were simulated for 4.1 mm diameter implants (L = 4, 6, 8, and 10 mm). A vertical masticatory load of 200 N was applied to three or six occlusal contact areas (3ca or 6ca) of the prosthetic crown. The bone strain energy density (SED) of 109.6 µJ/mm3 was assumed to be the pathological

A multi-disciplinary approach to congenitally missing anterior teeth.

Congenitally missing teeth are not an unusual occurrence. What makes this case study unique is the combination of restorative challenges offered. The patient presented with the permanent upper right cuspid and lower anterior right and left central incisors congenitally missing, and with an underdeveloped upper right lateral incisor. Distinctive existing occlusion and tooth alignment difficulties precluded a simple approach of merely extracting the residual primary teeth and replacing the missing teeth prosthetically. Using orthodontics to create ideal interocclusal and interarch space was crit
