A bench-top model of middle ear effusion diagnosed with optical tympanometry.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the validity of a bench-top model of an optical tympanometry device to diagnose in vitro model of middle ear effusion (MEE). METHODS AND MATERIALS: We illuminated an in vitro model of ear canal and tympanic membrane with broadband light and relayed remitted light to a spectrometer system. We then used our proprietary algorithm to extract spectral features that, together with our logistic regression classifiers, led us to calculate a set of simplified indices related to different middle ear states. Our model included a glass vial covered with a porcine submucosa (represen

Interexaminer reproducibility of optical coherence tomography for measuring the tear film meniscus.

PURPOSE: New optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices with anterior segment module are able to measure the tear meniscus height (TMH) and tear meniscus area (TMA). Since the borders of the area and the height are to be marked by an examiner, the measurements are prone to be subjective. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the interexaminer reproducibility of the tear meniscus measurements with OCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this prospective cross-sectional study, both eyes of 300 consecutive patients with and without dry eye were studied. Following routine ophthalmologic examination, tear-film OCT

Covalent attachment of bacteriorhodopsin monolayer to bromo-terminated solid supports: preparation, characterization, and protein stability.

The interfacing of functional proteins with solid supports and the study of related protein-adsorption behavior are promising and important for potential device applications. In this study, we describe the preparation of bacteriorhodopsin (bR) monolayers on Br-terminated solid supports through covalent attachment. The bonding, by chemical reaction of the exposed free amine groups of bR with the pendant Br group of the chemically modified solid surface, was confirmed both by negative AFM results obtained when acetylated bR (instead of native bR) was used as a control and by weak bands observed

First randomised controlled trial comparing the sirolimus-eluting bioadaptor with the zotarolimus-eluting drug-eluting stent in patients with de novo coronary artery lesions: 12-month clinical and imaging data from the multi-centre, international, BIODAPTOR-RCT.

BACKGROUND: The DynamX™ bioadaptor is the first coronary implant technology with a unique mechanism of unlocking the bioadaptor frame after polymer resorption over 6 months, uncaging the vessel while maintaining a dynamic support to the vessel. It aims to achieve the acute performance of drug-eluting stents (DES) with the advantages of restoration of vessel function. METHODS: This international, single blinded, randomised controlled (1:1) trial compared a sirolimus-eluting bioadaptor with a contemporary zotarolimus-eluting stent (DES) in 34 hospitals in Europe, Japan and New Zealand. Experimental, DFT, and SCAPS-1D Investigation of Sulfur-Incorporated Sb2Se3 Powders for Photovoltaic Applications.

Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) is a promising photoabsorber material for photovoltaics (PVs) owing to its favorable properties, including a high absorption coefficient, an optimal bandgap, earth-abundant constituents, and low toxicity. In this study, sulfur (S)-incorporated Sb2Se3 powders were synthesized by substituting Se with S using a solid-state method. Structural, morphological, and optical analyses showed that increasing sulfur content widened the bandgap from 1.10 to 1.54 eV. Furthermore, DFT calculations supported the experimental bandgap trend. SCAPS-1D simulations indicated that higher

Stable, Efficient, and Scalable Two-Dimensional Perovskites for Next-Generation Solar Cells.

Metal halide perovskites have rapidly evolved from a niche class of semiconductors to a leading platform for advanced photovoltaic technologies. Within this family of materials, two-dimensional (2D) perovskites have emerged as structurally engineered derivatives that offer enhanced environmental stability relative to their three-dimensional counterparts. However, reduced dimensionality also introduces a distinct optoelectronic regime governed by confinement effects and structural anisotropy, which complicates the direct translation of established design strategies. This review presents a unifi

Printing-Assisted Integration of Thermal, Fluidic and Electrical Components in Implants for Focal Brain Cooling.

The limitations of electrical neuromodulation are driving the development of neuroprosthetic systems enhanced with complementary modalities. A key technological challenge however remains the integration of the necessary hardware components (optical, thermal, fluidic, electrical) into miniaturized implants. Here we present a design framework, inspired by fast prototyping, that promises to reduce the complexity, fabrication time, and device bulk of multimodal neural interface systems. By combining extrusion-based 3D printing of silicones and discrete electronic components, we integrated thermal

Nitric Oxide-Mediated Minimally Invasive Neuromodulation through Gut-Brain Axis via a Bioelectronic Microdevice for Relieving Depressive Symptoms.

Minimally invasive brain modulation is essential for understanding and treating neurological disorders. This study presents a wireless, optically controlled nitric oxide (NO)-releasing microbioelectronic device (ONMD) that enables peripheral-to-central neuromodulation without direct brain intervention. Upon light activation, the ONMD releases NO to locally activate transient receptor potential (TRP) channels, forming a confined NO-TRP signaling hub that selectively stimulates the vagus nerve and activates the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), a key brainstem center involved in autonomic and re

Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS) and its countermeasures.

Astronauts can develop a distinct collection of neuro-ophthalmic findings during long duration spaceflight, collectively known as Spaceflight Associated Neuro-ocular Syndrome (SANS). These clinical characteristics include optic disc edema, hyperopic refractive shifts, globe flattening, and chorioretinal folds, which may pose a health risk for future space exploration. Obtaining knowledge of SANS and countermeasures for its prevention is crucial for upcoming crewed space missions and warrants a multidisciplinary approach. This review examines the potential causes and countermeasures of SANS, in

Clinical multimodal Brillouin microscopy-optical coherence elastography system for lens biomechanics.

SIGNIFICANCE: Estimating biomechanical properties of the in vivo crystalline lens remains a challenge and is a barrier to evaluating novel lens softening therapies. There is a need to estimate quantitative biomechanical properties of the human anterior and mid segments of the eye in vivo for conditions such as presbyopia. AIM: We aim to develop a multimodal elastography device that enables high-performance sequential 3D imaging with both Brillouin microscopy and optical coherence elastography (OCE). APPROACH: We combined Brillouin spectroscopy and OCE on a modified slit lamp platform for hum

Ultrasound biomicroscopy in glaucoma assessment.

Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) is an important tool in the diagnosis, evaluation and follow up of glaucoma patients. Even if we are dealing with a primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) or a primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) patient, the mechanism of angle closure can be revealed by performing an UBM. The device can help differentiate between the two types of glaucoma even in patients with opaque corneas when gonioscopy cannot be performed. Knowing the type of glaucoma is vital, especially regarding an individualized treatment, since each patient is unique and needs to be treated accordingly,
