Lateral hypothalamic LEPR neurons drive appetitive but not consummatory behaviors.

Assigning behavioral roles to genetically defined neurons within the lateral hypothalamus (LH) is an ongoing challenge. We demonstrate that a subpopulation of LH GABAergic neurons expressing leptin receptors (LHLEPR) specifically drives appetitive behaviors in mice. Ablation of LH GABAergic neurons (LHVGAT) decreases weight gain and food intake, whereas LHLEPR ablation does not. Appetitive learning in a Pavlovian conditioning paradigm is delayed in LHVGAT-ablated mice but prevented entirely in LHLEPR-ablated mice. Both LHVGAT and LHLEPR neurons bidirectionally modulate reward-related behaviors

An empirical examination of appetite hormones and cognitive and behavioral bulimic symptomatology.

PURPOSE: Existing literature has demonstrated that appetite hormones are frequently dysregulated in individuals with bulimic-spectrum eating disorders (BN-EDs). Although dysregulations in appetite hormones may maintain BN-EDs, very limited research has examined the association between dysregulated appetite hormones and cognitive and behavioral bulimic symptoms. We hypothesized that greater frequency of behavioral symptoms and severity of cognitive symptoms of BN-EDs would correlate with greater dysregulation in appetite hormones. METHODS: The association between ghrelin, cortisol, leptin, GLP

Appetitive search behaviors and stereotypies in polar bears (Ursus maritimus).

Stereotypies in captive animals have been defined as repetitive, largely invariant patterns of behavior that serve no obvious goal or function. Stereotypies are commonly attributed to boredom or stress and are typically treated by enriching captivity with distracting, appealing stimuli. These stimuli often include food presented at times other than regular feedings, and as a result, engage species-typical foraging behaviors that reduce stereotypies. The present work on captive polar bears is based on the view that stereotypies are due in part to inadequate support for the expression of species

Frustrated appetitive foraging behavior, stereotypic pacing, and fecal glucocorticoid levels in snow leopards (Uncia uncia) in the Zurich Zoo.

This study hypothesized that permanently frustrated, appetitive-foraging behavior caused the stereotypic pacing regularly observed in captive carnivores. Using 2 adult female snow leopards (Uncia uncia), solitarily housed in the Zurich Zoo, the study tested this hypothesis experimentally with a novel feeding method: electronically controlled, time-regulated feeding boxes. The expected result of employing this active foraging device as a successful coping strategy was reduced behavioral and physiological measures of stress, compared with a control-feeding regime without feeding boxes. The study

Biobehavioral susceptibility for obesity in childhood: Behavioral, genetic and neuroimaging studies of appetite.

Modern food environments are conducive to overeating and weight gain, but not everyone develops obesity. One reason for this may be that individuals differ in appetitive characteristics, or traits, that manifest early in life and go on to influence their behavioral susceptibility to gain and maintain excess weight. Classic studies showing that eating behavior in children can be measured by behavioral paradigms such as tests of caloric compensation and eating in the absence of hunger inspired the development and validation of psychometric instruments to assess appetitive characteristics in chil

Parent feeding behavior and child appetite: associations depend on feeding style.

OBJECTIVE: Eating behavior traits measured in early life predict eating behavior and weight trajectories later in development, and may be associated with certain parental feeding behaviors. Our goal was to investigate the relationship between a range of feeding behaviors, and preschoolers' appetitive traits. METHOD: Four hundred thirty-nine parents of UK 3-5 year olds completed scales measuring authoritarian vs. authoritative forms of limiting (Restriction vs. Monitoring) and promoting (Pressuring vs. Prompting) intake, as well as Emotional and Instrumental Feeding. Parents also completed sca

Effects of an antiandrogenic oral contraceptive on appetite and eating behavior in bulimic women.

High androgen levels in women with bulimia nervosa may promote bulimic behavior. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of an antiandrogenic oral contraceptive (OC) on appetite and eating behavior in women with bulimia nervosa compared to healthy controls. Twenty-one women with bulimia nervosa and 17 healthy controls matched for age and body mass index participated in the study. Basal and meal-related appetite and secretions of the satiety peptide cholecystokinin (CCK) and the appetite-stimulating peptide ghrelin were studied before and after 3 months of treatment with an

Biological bases for the integration of appetitive and consummatory grooming behaviors in the cat: a review.

Cats with pontile lesions, frontal neocortical lesions, and thyroidectomized cats display a dissociation of the appetitive and consummatory components of grooming behavior following tactile stimulation of the body surface, an abnormal behavior which waxes and wanes with the seasons of the year. Tryptophan hydroxylase activity and serotonin levels were significantly decreased in the superior colliculi (but not other brain regions) in cats with pontile lesions or frontal neocortical lesions, but not in thyroidectomized cats. Systemic administration of 5-hydroxytryptophan or monoamine oxidase inh

Dopaminergic modulation of visual responses in toads. I. Apomorphine-induced effects on visually directed appetitive and consummatory prey-catching behavior.

This study confirms for a phylogenetically basal terrestrial vertebrate that dopaminergic modulations interfere with the visually directed appetitive and consummatory feeding behaviors orienting and snapping, respectively. (1) In common toads Bufo bufo, intralymphatic administration of the dopamine D2/D1-receptor agonist apomorphine led to a dose-dependent facilitation of prey-snapping in response to moving objects. The snapping activity reached a maximum 15-35 min after apomorphine injection. (2) To changes in configurational stimulus features, the basic pattern of discrimination was maintain

Content validation of the Eating Behavior and Appetite Questionnaire (EBAQ) in adolescents with obesity or overweight.

BACKGROUND: Obesity in children and adolescents is a growing global concern. Changes in appetite and eating behaviors are clinically relevant outcomes for long-term management of obesity. The Eating Behavior and Appetite Questionnaire (EBAQ) was developed as existing patient-reported outcome measures do not comprehensively capture concepts important to individuals with obesity. Its content and psychometric validity have been demonstrated in adults; this study evaluated the content validity of the 17-item EBAQ in adolescents with obesity or overweight. METHODS: This cross-sectional qualitative

Beyond appetite: Acylated ghrelin as a learning, memory and fear behavior-modulating hormone.

Although often referred to as a hunger hormone, recent evidence highlights a neuroprotective function of acylated ghrelin (AG) and a substantial role in the regulation of declarative and aversive memories as well as fear behavior. As such, in this review, we i) evaluate what specific stages and forms of memory, as well as which respective brain areas are affected by acylated ghrelin, ii) illustrate the plasticity-associated signaling pathways of AG in the hippocampus, also involving memory resolution-enhancing neurogenesis, iii) elucidate how the peptide modulates neurotransmitter systems (glu

Optogenetic Stimulation of Type I GAD65+ Cells in Taste Buds Activates Gustatory Neurons and Drives Appetitive Licking Behavior in Sodium-Depleted Mice.

Mammalian taste buds are comprised of specialized neuroepithelial cells that act as sensors for molecules that provide nutrition (e.g., carbohydrates, amino acids, and salts) and those that are potentially harmful (e.g., certain plant compounds and strong acids). Type II and III taste bud cells (TBCs) detect molecules described by humans as "sweet," "bitter," "umami," and "sour." TBCs that detect metallic ions, described by humans as "salty," are undefined. Historically, type I glial-like TBCs have been thought to play a supportive role in the taste bud, but little research has been done to ex

A preliminary exploration in the associations between cannabis use frequency and appetite, eating behavior, and anthropometrics.

BACKGROUND: The effects of cannabis use on gastrointestinal function are unclear. We conducted a preliminary study on whether cannabis use frequency was associated with appetite, eating behavior, and anthropometrics phenotypically and after controlling for genetic and environmental factors via a co-twin control design. METHODS: We first tested the phenotypic associations between cannabis use frequency (average number of days per week) with appetite, eating behavior, anthropometrics, and diet in simple unadjusted models and then re-estimated those associations in models adjusting for alcohol a

Aromatization Is Not Required for the Facilitation of Appetitive Sexual Behaviors in Ovariectomized Rats Treated With Estradiol and Testosterone.

Testosterone can be safely and effectively administered to estrogen-treated post-menopausal women experiencing hypoactive sexual desire. However, in the United States and Canada, although it is often administered off-label, testosterone co-administered with estradiol is not a federally approved treatment for sexual arousal/desire disorder, partly because its mechanism is poorly understood. One possible mechanism involves the aromatization of testosterone to estradiol. In an animal model, the administration of testosterone propionate (TP) given in combination with estradiol benzoate (EB) signif

Caralluma Fimbriata Supplementation Improves the Appetite Behavior of Children and Adolescents with Prader-Willi Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) results from a deletion of the paternal genes in the region of chromosome 15q11-q13. PWS develops hyperphagia, which when left unmanaged, leads to an excessive ingestion of food. To date there is inadequate pharmacological treatment or supplementation for modification of the PWS hyperphagia and/or the associated behaviors. Therefore, the best practice is familial supervision and restriction of diet and environment. AIM: We aimed to determine if the natural supplement of Caralluma fimbriata extract (CFE) could attenuate hyperphagia or the associated appe

Vaginocervical stimulation attenuates the sensitization of appetitive sexual behaviors by estradiol benzoate in the ovariectomized rat.

The acute administration of estradiol benzoate (EB) to the ovariectomized (OVX) rat induces low levels of lordosis while sexually appetitive behaviors (e.g., hops, darts, solicitations) are absent, yet the repeated administration of EB results in a behavioral sensitization in which lordosis is potentiated and sexually appetitive behaviors are induced. We have shown that repeated copulation attenuates the sensitization of appetitive sexual behaviors. Here, we assessed which component of male stimulation during copulation is involved in the attenuation. On 8 occasions, sexually experienced OVX L

Appetite-focused dialectical behavior therapy for the treatment of binge eating with purging: a preliminary trial.

OBJECTIVE: This treatment development study investigated the acceptability and efficacy of a modified version of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for bulimia nervosa (BN), entitled appetite focused DBT (DBT-AF). METHOD: Thirty-two women with binge/purge episodes at least one time per week were randomly assigned to 12 weekly sessions of DBT-AF (n = 18) or to a 6-week delayed treatment control (n = 14). Participants completed the EDE interview and self-report measures at baseline, 6 weeks, and posttreatment. RESULTS: Treatment attrition was low, and DBT-AF was rated highly acceptable. At 6 w

Impact of Fluoxetine on Behavioral Invigoration of Appetitive and Aversively Motivated Responses: Interaction With Dopamine Depletion.

Impaired behavioral activation and effort-related motivational dysfunctions like fatigue and anergia are debilitating treatment-resistant symptoms of depression. Depressed people show a bias towards the selection of low effort activities. To determine if the broadly used antidepressant fluoxetine can improve behavioral activation and reverse dopamine (DA) depletion-induced anergia, male CD1 mice were evaluated for vigorous escape behaviors in an aversive context (forced swim test, FST), and also with an exercise preference choice task [running wheel (RW)-T-maze choice task]. In the FST, fluoxe

The association between oral behaviors, appetitive traits, and temporomandibular disorders - a matched case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) often impair mastication and quality of life. While oral behaviors are recognized as risk factors, the role of appetitive traits remains unclear. This study investigated associations among oral behaviors, appetitive traits, and TMDs. METHODS: A matched case-control design included 84 patients with TMDs and 84 age‑ and sex‑matched controls. Participants completed validated Chinese versions of the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC) and the Adult Eating Behavior Questionnaire. RESULTS: TMD patients demonstrated significantly higher waking‑state oral beha
